Well, it was not exactly Vietnam as I had planned but the short road trip from the Tampa Bay area to Sanibel Island was an easy one. It was less than 2.5 hours before we were seated at the Lazy Flamingo and ordering lunch with a cold beer in our hands. My burger was excellent but the fried Grouper bites Liz ordered were ok at best, and not real good when we saw the "market price" was $16.99 for only 4 pieces of fried Grouper and more french fries than the two of us could eat together. Disappointed after not taking action quickly enough to take advantage of the super low rate of $85 per night at the Tween Waters Inn on Captiva Island, I didn't know what to expect at the Sanibel Sunset Beach Resort ... read more

Long time blog followers know how much we love Captiva and Sanibel Islands and never miss a visit when we are in the Fort Myers area. I think you can go back through the travel blogs for the entries about the Lighthouse, the Ding Darling Nature Preserve, the Shell Museum and more if you wish to know more about these beautiful islands. As for today, it was sunny, it was Sunday, and it was time for Captiva. We drove through Sanibel and noticed a nice Farmers' Market and stopped for an avacado, a lime, and a root beer float. Sanibel and Captiva are teaming with great looking galleries, boutiques, shell shops and restaurants; be we ignored their lure and headed right for our favorite beach, located out near one of our favorite restaurants, The Mucky Duck. ... read more

Hello again dear friends, We are writing to you from the warm and sunny beaches of Florida, Sanibel Island more specifically. This missive will start you off with a short history lesson. Dave and I met in September of 1992 and began dating in December- by March of 1993 things were serious and we decided to take our first vacation together. Later I learned that Dave was a bit worried because he had spent most of his time with me at work and wasn’t sure I knew how to relax. In Sanibel he saw the real me and was pleased. As you may have guessed by now our first trip was spent on Sanibel Island. We have returned here to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. Wow, 15 years and it has flown by. We’ve been in ... read more

Nervousness, anticipation, happiness, excitement, scared, and proud, all feelings going through me at the same time during our first day on our journey home from Mantoloking, NJ to Captiva Island, FL. The last time I was on this boat it was a disaster. After trying to pull out of the marina and crashing into the dock and another boat, I was hesitant to try it again this time, especially without help. Nevertheless, Walt started up the boat, I figured if we can’t do it here then we’re not going to be able to do it anywhere else so let’s give it a shot. Walt was amazing and I did absolutely nothing! I ran around the boat anticipating each and every bump or crash but it was perfect! Walt was perfect! He brought the boat from the ... read more

Today, Jen and I spent the day on Sanibel Island, famous for its shelling. A great variety of shells from all over the world tend to roll up on the shores here, and so many people walk around leaning over to look for them that they have termed this the "Sanibel Stoop." I was mostly interested in looking for shells on the beaches whereas Jen was mainly interested in renting bikes and cruising the island that way. We both were being stubborn and kind of ignoring what the other person was saying, hoping that we would each just get our own way. In the end, Jen flat out called me on it and I consented to riding the bikes. Once we drove over the causeway (ie bridge) that leads to the island, we drove around a ... read more

Gearin' up to swim away from this desolate little island, flippers and all. And can I say, thank goodness for hitching rides with willing mothers .... I'm so broke I don't know that I could afford the gas to get out of our driveway. (Not to worry though, I've got money tied up in traveller's cheques just waiting to be pushed into the hands of little thai children peddling durian ice cream). So I will be stopping over the hills at grandmother's house before I actually spread my wings on Wednesday (we'll be driving over monday afternoon if anyone has some spare time and wants to chat ... I'll have my cell on) ... pay my respects to the family before I disappear in the abyss of the unknown - apparently there are concerns I'm going ... read more

Really, I have absolutely nothing interesting to say. Really. But since you insist ... My updates only go so far as this: bought some clothes, made a mess, cooked a stew, shot some pool, and voila. Today was my first day not wearing a bandage on my finger ... hoorah hooray ... and although I still can't feel it at all, it's not lookin' so bad. Irregardless: Now that's something to hoorah and hooray about, right? right? Oh ... and my stew. (Yeah, I really am going for "Worst Blog Of The Year.") By the way, if you want to read something actually compelling check out this blog instead ... ... she's got some phenomenal pictures. Orrrrr, you can just stare mindlessly at the disheveled contents of "my" room:... read more

Aside from splurging on a new pack for the trip ... look at my pack ... which can be very exciting -- provided it shows up on time -- I have but one tid bit for you'uns this evening (I can still say you'uns 'cause I ate lunch at a soul food diner today and what with the turnip greens and fried okra it powered up my southern speak like magic mushrooms to mario). I took a walk today ... and despite my drug-celibacy since ... well, not that long, but long enough for clarity of mind ... despite technically being fully emerged in reality, I felt crazy stoned ... Although I think my soundtrack may have had something to do with it. I was listening to this mix by Aadam Jacobs (c/o Los Seguros CD ... read more
