I had a really long, detailed entry about my adventures in some of the ports thus far, but my computer died whilst writing them, and lost everything. And considering how little time I actually get to be online or to write entries, I didn't have the energy to do it again. I just have to say that Cozumel is my favorite port so far, Nassau is outrageously and unnecessarily expensive almost everywhere, and port manning is the most pointless and annoying part of my job. Every third cruise, I have to be trapped on board in the event of an emergency so that there is a certain percentage of crew on board to assist in an evacuation. How hard is it for people to find and exit on a ship? Well actually, I might be giving ... read more

Today is the last day of my holiday in South Florida. Thursday morning, I drove to Charlotte and caught my flight to Ft. Lauderdale. Thank goodness I found a direct flight or my other option was going to be via a connecting flight in Detroit. Tell me how that makes good sense! The flight was not full--which was hugely surprising to me after only travelling on easyJet or Ryanair where they packed us in like sardines on every single flight--and I was the only person in my row of three seats. I laid down and took a serious nap. Only woke up when there was some turbulence and then I said to myself, "Self, it's only turbulence. Go back to sleep." And I listened. After the plane touched down in Ft. Lauderdale, there was only one ... read more

I had a nice little surprise when I got to the Calgary airport. When I checked in, the American Airlines lady said to me, "Okay, so your destination today is Miami." I promptly said, "No, it's Lima." At this point, we argued with each other for a minute or two until she looked at her computer and in a very snitty tone said, "You don't leave Miami for Peru until tomorrow night. You have a 24 hour layover in Miami." Wicked, 24 hours in a place that I didn't plan on going to and without a hotel reservation (or money to get one). I was livid. Since I had no choice but to check-in anyway, I tried to find an Internet terminal in the departures area, but none was to be found. Well, if any of ... read more

So Delta Gamma Convention was incredible and I had an amazing time catching up with former co-workers and presidents I had worked with throughout the year. UBC representation was strong with 10 members in attendance. I departed from Orlando with my girls there to see me off. It was hard but after some TCBY, Starbucks, and giggles in the boarding area I was ready to start this European Adventure. Unfortunately, the European Adventure wasn't ready for me. My flight was delayed by almost an hour and a half from Orlando to Miami, but no problem because I arrived exactly one hour before my flight for London departed. And it was all working out perfectly until I realized that I had been sitting at the wrong gate for over 3 hours waiting for the wrong plane going ... read more

Welcome to my travel blog. I'm finishing up my last few weeks of work. Mostly tying up loose ends and getting ready for my biggest trip in almost two years. I'd like to use this journal as a way to keep in contact with those back home; which means not with me on the trip (Miami, Phoenix, Tokyo, and wherever else I have those I consider family). That's everyone! But come one come all. I'll warn you now, I WILL be bragging and I WILL sound pompous when I write in this log! I'm a travelblogger, going to the travel mecca of the world, and I've saved up to be able to do what I want when I want...what else would I do?!?! My basic itenerary looks like this: Miami to Phoenix. Say hi to mom ... read more

To answer the question all at once, I'm going to Europe because I entered a travel contest given by the Miami Herald, and I won. Don't ask how. I'm in as much awe as anyone else. I have the article. That came out on Easter Sunday so it was a double wammie! Until school's over, no plans will be made, but after it ends, I start my one day a week GRE course, working and planning/shopping for the trip. Pointers from the experienced are very much welcome indeed. Especially in the way of languages. I will keep up my French and learn Italian off the BBC website like I've been doing, but if there is a better way, PLEASE inform me! Until after finals end on May 11, Lisa... read more

Hello world! Friends! Family! I have gotten a travel blog with which I can keep you all updated on my crazy doings in Europe. The trip will begin the 3rd of July and end the 27th. My exploration of Europe will be limited to three countries, but it will be thorough! I'd rather travel to fewer places and soak in more rather than breeze through everything and retain nothing of what I've learned. England is where I begin and end. France and Italy are where I test my language skills and expand my mind! Am I excited? YES I AM! Can I wait to go? HELL NO! My itinerary is still shaky, but with my travel experienced mother and friends I'm sure I will throw together something spectacular. Gifts abound will be send back to the ... read more

After four months of Calgary, with its mountains and a lot of snow, it was time for something else: Miami!! I decided to go to Miami for two weeks and take a language course over there. This way I could experience the atmosphere Will Smith sings about, have some sun and beach, and improve my English a bit more. However, this was easier said then done. Although I only wanted to go to the States for two weeks and I was planning to spend lots of money there (a language course is not cheap unfortunately), the US customs did not want to let me through, I still don’t have a clue why. I wasn’t told or asked anything, they just said I had to wait and then they let me sit there like I was some ... read more
