arrived back in Miami from the cruise on the 9th sept. am staying for a week. have checked into the Clay Hotel which is a cute little spanish style place - quite pretty actually :) Have meet some choice people here - especially a bunch of spanish speaking dudes - 2 from south america (nicholas and german ) and 1 from spain (victor). had some fun nights with them. German and Victor took charlie and I to a little salsa club and then proceeded to try and teach us some salsa. a fun night!!! such a laugh! not really sure i learnt anything - its kinda hard! the only easy bit is the slow 'lovey-dovey' stuff!! anyone can do that!! One thing i can say though is that ive never had so many people to dance ... read more

Train to the airport Delayed flight to Miami I’m on a cruise ship! It’s finally cruise time! Anita was nice to get up early and drop me off at the local Marta station so that I could catch the next train south towards the airport. I waited about 15 minutes for a train to come but I had plenty of time to get myself to the airport so I wasn’t going to be time crunched. It took about 45 minutes from the arrival of the train to the check in line up. Not bad! I went to the self check in kiosk and quickly booked myself in only to find out that my flight was delayed from a 9:01AM departure to a 10:13AM departure. Sigh…more waiting around. Finally I got onto my flight that wasn’t too ... read more

I was only in Aventura (suburb of Miami) for a few days but it was a pretty adventurous 4 days. We happened to be there during Hurricane Katrina on her first landfall and the eye of the hurricane passed right overhead. I was pretty nervous but the local were very calm and we just hunkered down playing Trivia Pursuit 90's edition until 1am. Thankfully Katrina was only level 1 on her first landfall as we all know the damage that she caused over New Orleans. ... read more

It's all gone! I was on the phone with Mahesh from customer service for two hours but there's nothing that can be done. It's all gone! All of my college papers, all of my music, every cartoon that I drew at Tulane --- it's all been permanently deleted. Continuing to live life on the brink of an aneurysm can be stressful. Before my computer eliminated my college history and before I realized that I had no flight itinerary my week back in Greensboro was already pretty intense. But I had a breather this summer, a little time to slow down and relax. I didn't have time to study for the GRE, let alone take it, but I did have time to fall back in love with New Orleans. I was morbidly depressed to leave and ... read more

D and I are here in Miami melting away. We got here yesterday morning after a brief flight and fell asleep in the hotel. Our hotel is a nice - we're in the art deco district of south beach. In fact, they filmed parts of Miami Vice in our hotel! Oh..and before I forget, guess who we saw at the airport yesterday? The Black Eyed Peas!! Our celebrity moment. And I was pretty damn excited - we both love the BEP. Yesterday was a relaxing day - we walked around a bit, went to the beach, took some naps and had dinner at a cafe on ocean drive. Today we rode this great electric bus around south beach and did some shopping for last minute items for costa rica. Now we're off to find some shrimp ... read more

If memory serves me right, it was August of 1992 when I first encountered Cafe Cubano. It was directly after Hurricane Andrew had savaged south Florida. I couldn't comprehend at the time why all these frazzled Floridians were crouching on their front lawns, teetering over tiny coffeepots. My Pop explained they were making Cuban Coffee, and although that meant nothing to me, it was clearly providing them solace in a time of great distress. While watching my sister's gymnastics practice last Tuesday, a saintly woman named Maggie dropped by and whipped up a batch of Cafe Cubano for the waiting parents and for the coaches. I leapt at the opportunity to try it, having become a saddo caffeine dependent thanks to the workerbee pace at WorMar. It was heavenly! Essentially a shot of Cuban espresso mixed ... read more

What a welcome change it was when we got out of the airport and drove to Miami Beach. Hot sun, palm trees and a wide beach that stretched for miles. I'd been a bit put off by stories of crime before arriving - we even considered - changing dates to spend less time there - but now we were here I was glad to have the best part of four days to kick back and relax. And that's mostly what we did. The hostel we stayed in was in real need of a refurb, in fact it's the only place I've stayed so far that I could have any gripes with. The room was manky and the mossies swarmed around the stairwell and made their way into our room each time the door was open. Most ... read more

Arrived New York in snow storm. Absolutely freezing but beautiful. Dumped everything in hostel, then found pizza and wandered around the city near Central Park for a few hours. Remember Famiglia pizza... it was great. Locals friendly, Metro easy, roomies old! Left for Miami via Chicago next dy at 1pm, spent morning walking Central Pk and taking "snow" piccies, back in 3 months. Planes were delayed and arrived Miami 2am. Trashy, cheap, colourful and American. People are complete tarts and everyone wants a tip. Did the Everglades airboat, played with Larry the baby alligator. Got lost in Teds Hideaway and drank too many coronas and cowboys. Clocked up dinners with Greg, Mario nd Kiki before leaving. Didn´t pay for anything but learnt how to salsa, samba and do the naive departure before groping began. They were ... read more

So after packing everybody went into de buses straight ahead to the harbor and get into the biggest ship in the world Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the seas 13 floors of fun....wait......wroooooong. Nobody told these 90 mexicans on board ,that Royal Caribbean is the perfect cruiseline for honeymooners and retired people, not for a bunch of kids between 18 and 20 years, thats what we believed until this day. A giantic boat and the first activity find your cabin. I was sharing my cabin with other three friends, (remember, it was a "cheap" travel) so our coffin (sorry cabin) was something to remember, a square of 3x2.5 meters (including bathroom and shower), just to put this in perspective the only way to dress was that three of us stay on beds and one try to make ... read more
