"You look like you like Rock n Roll" We arrived in Miami at 8pm after an easy travel day and flight. We're staying at The Beacon Hotel in the Art Deco district and right across from the ocean. We spent a little extra to have that view! Settle in, unpack and straight out to walk around and explore. There is a massive thunderstorm hanging over the ocean, insanely large clouds with constant flashing lightning. Absolutely stunning! We wandered up and down Ocean Boulevard looking at the architecture and feeling slightly overwhelmed, there's a huge party/club scene here and as you know, that's not really our thing. Marleah came here about 8 or 9 years ago and it wasn't quite like this. When we told people we were coming here they were surprised and that must be ... read more

There is a hurricane forming off the coast, pretty overcast day so didn't do too much. Went on a south beach food tour for dinner. Met a few people on the food tour and ended up having some drinks with them after the food tour. The food tour itself was pretty good, ate food I normally wouldn't order and it was all very good. I fly out of Miami tomorrow for Newark.... read more

Left the hotel around 8am to walk back to the hostel to cancel the rest of my stay there. Got some groceries from whole foods (I was amazed by how big the shop was!). Went to Lincoln road for some shopping and ended up at the beach around 3pm.... Weather was perfect and I was quite surprised by how flat the water was (no waves what so ever!).... read more

Arrived in Fort Lauderdale at about 6pm and caught a cab to the hostel, there wasn't any air con in the room I was put in so I decided to walk over to ocean drive and check out some hotels... The humidity is crazy and ocean drive is packed with people. Walked into a hotel and the reception guy helped me find and book a hotel down the road called Waldorf towers. Caught a taxi back to the hostel to collect my bags and checked into waldorf towers and went straight to sleep!... read more

So who says flying isn't fun? ME! that's who!!! After dealing with all the emotions of leaving home, the big farewell from Jane, then finding the card she left me in my bag (naughty girl Jane :) ), sitting next to someone in the lounge who was blubbering just like me (lovely to meet you Genna and I hope your wonderful new life in LA is just the start of good things to come), enjoying the plane food (yes I like it!) and watching 3 movies I have had on my hit list, I was really getting into having things under control. Until I got to LAX. Now it wasn't the fact that I don't really like this airport, or that it took 2 hours to get my bags and go through customs. Really, that didn't ... read more

Three hours of immigration, customs and bag scans and we had finally made it through to the arrivals hall of Fort Lauderdale airport. Unlike most of the South American cities we had visited this was not going to be a two pound private cab journey but instead a £15 (each) shared mini bus to reach our hotel located on Miami beach. After the long debacle at the airport it was about 10pm by the time we had arrived at our hotel. Starving hungry, we nipped across the road and grabbed some true American grub; a greasy Pizza Hut. Feeling like we were about to burst, we rolled back over the road to the hotel and collapsed on our super king sized bed, in our plush air conditioned room complete with a view over Miami beach...oh how ... read more

Geo: 25.7928, -80.1349Miami Beach, specifically South Beach, at the height of college/university spring break- what could possibly go wrong with this idea?? I have to admit that somewhere in the grey memories of my own university days, I was somewhat envious of the Arts Majors types that could take a week or so off for spontaneous debauchery (Engineering deep thinkers had a nasty habit of scheduling an exam phase which would immediately follow our spring break). That said, Miami Binge Drinking Majors with a Minor in Gangsta got old really quick. Our first day on South Beach was relatively quiet but that probably had something to do with the battalion of police sweeping the beach area breaking up drunken fights. And when did enormous, barely covered butts, that can't help but invoke ... read more

Hi all You can see a heck of a lot in 2 days if you plan it just right. We had booked ( 3 nights)into a little motel suite Sorrento Villas a block away from Miami Beach North - all the real action takes place at Miami Beach South but this great value motel was right on a bus route which took us either Downtown or to South Beach. And being a block away from North Beach it was great for a late afternoon beach stroll when we arrived. I didn't quite know what to expect of Miami - it hadn't been on my radar but it was on Suzanne's and I am so pleased we spent some time there, A huge city of course - driving in on these roads is not for the fainthearted ... read more
