So it finally arrived--the entire reason I had planned this trip. We went to South Beach to see the largest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world. It's probably weird to say that we went to South Beach for any reason other than the beach or for shopping or anything associated with beach vacations. And that's not to say that we didn't do either of those things. We did get in some beach time, we got some food from one of the local restaurants, and we even bought a few supplies at a store. And I did the touristy thing and got a Starbuck's drink as we were about to leave. But the primary purpose for visiting was also the primary purpose for this trip: checking out the Art Deco. The voyage down from West ... read more

Our fourth overseas trip for this celebratory year began on Sunday morning, November 18th. We headed to Adelaide airport from where we flew to Sydney and after a short stop in the Qantas Lounge boarded a Qantas flight to the USA. We had asked to be upgraded using Fletcher's frequent flyer points and we were delighted when we were informed the day before we left that we had been successful. Therefore, the flight from Sydney to Dallas, which was 14 hours, we spent in Business Class which made the trip so comfortable. Lovely food and the ability to sleep stretched out made time go very quickly. Arriving in Dallas we had a fairly easy path through customs and then a one hour wait in the American Airlines lounge before boarding our very full Economy flight to ... read more

Left 4.00am from Memphis and drove to airport - car rental place shut so left the car and hoped for the best. Uber from the airport - driver from Cuba said ocean is cold - he’s clearly never been to Bridlington! Stayed at Hotel Pelican on Ocean Drive friendly place with 2 free mojitos every day between 4&6 - we managed to take advantage of this before hitting the beach each day Evenings were generally spent pottering around getting our bearings and checking out the various bars and hotels as they lit up at night Plenty of art deco in the area so we downloaded a free walking tour - definitely worth doing as it covers about 10 buildings but there are so many others on the way - check out the Tiffany building, Essex building ... read more

Here we are, the 29th State visited by Tanya....and we did it through two different stays! The first one was after some flying time. Durban-Dubai, 8 hours on a plane...than it was a long 23 hours transfer in Dubai...drinking way too much bubbles before heading for a dreadful 15 hours flight, full flight all the way to Fort Lauderdale. This is my first flight to the tiny airport. Emirates doesn't fly to Miami, but to this tiny airport few miles North. Great news, we would be out way ahead of schedule....to explore a little! Rented the car and we are on our way West, all the way to the Everglades. It is lunch time, but it's freezing. Temperatures top a maximum of 12 degrees...something I have never experienced around South Florida. At least we are lucky, ... read more

From walking on snow at -25c to walking on sand with +25c. Fifth and last day in Miami and at last the fuzzy feeling of jet lag has gone. While our body clocks have been adjusting we've managed to enjoy the art deco festival, lots of tasty food, walks on the beach and got round to watching Star Wars. ... read more

2/1/17 So today was the first day on my own. I went to the mall to try and buy myself some sandals for South America. I ended up buying some crocs (not the standard ones) that were really comfortable. I couldn't really buy anything there as the shops were very expensive and designer. I had a browse around, got some Italian for lunch and headed back. I went to the beach for an hour when I was back but it was quite cloudy. In the evening I went to a Mexican tapas restaurant and it was so nice. It was called taquiza. It was quite pricey but definitely worth it and the food was full of flavour. I met a really nice guy called Andy and sat and talked with him for a couple hours. He ... read more

New Years Day 01/17 After New Year's Eve I felt quite hungover. It didn't help by the fact that I was woken up at 7am by that creepy guy I mentioned. He was playing techno music through his headphones but it was so loud that the whole room could hear. What makes matters worse is that when I looked down at his bunk he was violently masturbating under his blanket!! I just rolled over and pretended to be asleep. Luckily I was on the top bunk. I woke up at around 10.30am. I got some food from 7 eleven and ate it by the beach. I went on the beach for an hour or so after that but it was very hot so could not stay out there for long. I was really craving a milkshake ... read more

30/12 On my first full day in Miami it was surprisingly quite cold. It was still 20 degrees but for Miami it was chilly and the strong winds didn't help. I walked around the shops in the morning. They had a forever 21 and a Victoria secret, it was so difficult not to buy anything!! I had to restrain myself as I knew that my rucksack was already pretty full so I didn't want to overload it with more clothes. I've decided I'm just gonna have to wait till LA/Vegas to do some shopping! I had a Starbucks for lunch and sat down to write my first blog post. One of the things I am most conscious about on this holiday is gaining weight. Obviously because of the amount of the alcohol and the lack of ... read more
