Well seeing as we're in america, it makes sense that for spring break, we had to go to the home of spring break - South Beach. We flew down on the saturday after uni finished (after an incredible day's snowboarding in the trees, probably the best day of the season i reckon - over 2 foot of snow in the week prior, so there was some awesome waist deep powder in some of the glades). When we got to fort lauderdale airport, my luggage didn't turn up and i had to wait until the following afternoon to get it, but no compensation from the airline. When we arrived the place was right on the beach and so we went for a midnight swim. The water was really warm, and it was great to spend some time ... read more

Hello to everyone! Where to start?! After having a migraine at Heathrow airport and having to take shoes etc off for a bag search, our flight actually turned out to be pretty smooth. Having never been on a long haul flight, or with any other carrier than Easy jet and Ryanair I was taken aback by the on board service and entertainment systems. Managed to stare at the screen for a whole movie without actually taking any of it in. I did watch the next one though and got over all the goings on around me. Some drunk guy went to the toliet and on his return he accussed this other bloke of sitting in his seat. It was so amusing, even the hostess was laughing out aloud. When we got to the airport in Miami ... read more

Marriott in Miami Last year for our anniversary I decided to take my wife to Miami. We had been there several times before and it’s a really enjoyable city with things to do around every corner. I made reservations at this upscale South Beach Miami hotel. It was a Marriott and is probably the most luxurious hotel we have ever stayed at before. The rooms were filled with an art deco splendor and gave off the atmosphere of high energy throughout. Best of all it was located in South Beach’s (SoBe for those who live there) Ocean Drive. Talk about being in the middle of everything. Our time was spent relaxing and reading. There’s something about reading a good book on a balcony overlooking Ocean Drive, while drinking some vegan coffee. Each ... read more

Day 1 - Wednesday march 15th After being to work for 2 hours my manager, kermit and I headed for the airport to catch our plane. We were about to leave a rainy cold Amsterdam behind but things almost turned out differently. The purpose of this trip is a business trip to Miami to attend a conference and then fly on to Santiago de Chile also to do business. When doing the checkin portuguese precision regarding passports almost kept me and Kermit in Amsterdam. To be able to enter the the States you have to have a passport which has a special bar with a code that can be sweeped through a special machine they have at the checkin. Offcourse my beautiful portuguese passport didnt work properly and kept being rejected. Then the groundstewardess went to ... read more

I hadn't read up on anything for my start into America, so as I peered out of the window from Miami's airport shuttle I couldn't hide my pleasure at seeing the abundance of art deco buildings in South Beach. What little knowledge I knew of Miami started to flood in; Miami Vice, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine and CSI. Television and music really didn't sculpt my youth, but at least I have a bit of it to fall back on. I proceeded with checking in at the hostel, and began arguing with the receptionist when she charged me for multiple nights. I then had to face facts when I understood that $26 is the charge for one night. I have now well and truly hit the roof of the budgeting backpacking world as I ... read more

My last entry finished somewhat quickly, and thought I would take the time to add some additional commentary. Only 3 more months remain until my departure to teach in China and there are still some unfinished efforts. The one year Visa does take longer to acquire. But Mr. Lee, the Foreign Affairs Administrator assures me, that it is a minor delay. Until the Visa is in my hand, I don't really want to pay for my freighter travel from the Port of Miami to Hong Kong. Since the trip will take about 40 days, at about $100.00 per day, it would be a hard blow to forfeit such an amount. On short notice, airline travel will always be available, at about $1,200.00 also from Miami Int. Airport to Hong Kong. But I have not given ... read more

South Beach Florida Hotel South Florida Miami is definitely not a place to go if you don’t like to party. This place is so full of energy it wears you out quickly if you can’t keep up. We stayed at a little Miami hotel called The Clay Hotel. I chose it because there was a strong Hollywood history to the hotel. Lots of famous people not only stayed at this pink painted hotel, but they also shot movies here. Plus it was so unique we figured we’d give it a shot. We were quit pleased to see that it was a really nice hotel compared to the website. For vegan restaurants in Miami we went to several Miami restaurants during our stay. The Beehive was actually really good with lots of great vegan cuisines to choose ... read more

Sadly we didn't have very long to spend in Miami which is a shame because it is a cool place. We stayed in a hotel right by the beach which was lovely but unfortunately, being their winter time, it wasn't hot enough to sunbathe. We took advantage of the great shops and nice restaurants. It was good to be able to fully understand the menus and to have 'normal' food again. We had forgotten that salad and veggies existed. The only downside was the price, much more expensive than Latin America. As the Americans aren't into football (or should I say 'soccer'?) we decided to catch a basketball game instead. We went to see Miami Heat beat Atlanta with Shaquille O'Neal easing them to victory. It was a great experience as the Americans are very over ... read more
