"You look like you like Rock n Roll" We arrived in Miami at 8pm after an easy travel day and flight. We're
staying at The Beacon Hotel in the Art Deco district and right across
from the ocean. We spent a little extra to have that view! Settle in,
unpack and straight out to walk around and explore. There is a massive
thunderstorm hanging over the ocean, insanely large clouds with constant
flashing lightning. Absolutely stunning! We wandered up and down Ocean
Boulevard looking at the architecture and feeling slightly overwhelmed,
there's a huge party/club scene here and as you know, that's not really
our thing. Marleah came here about 8 or 9 years ago and it wasn't quite
like this. When we told people we were coming here they were surprised
and that must be the reason. It is extremely humid and hot which is very
hard to adjust to, especially when you wear boots, all black, etc.
Marleah's hair is super crazy huge and frizzy!!!
Time for a late night dinner, we decided to go to Española Way which
we had researched and wanted to check out. Española Way, built in the
early
1920's, is an Historic Spanish Village and was modeled after
Mediterranean villages in Paris and Spain. It was originally a meeting
place for the very wealthy to eat and dance in the street. The end of
the 20's brought about rough conditions, gambling and gangsters
including Al Capone. Slowly over the years it became dilapidated and run
down, until the the 1980's when the area started getting some love and
refurbishment. Española Way became a filming location, especially for
Miami Vice. Miami Vice!
We ate at a Cuban restaurant called Havana 1957. Marleah had Vaca
Frita, literally "fried cow", slow cooked flank steak browned after
cooking with crazy tangy mojo sauce and the best black beans ever. John
had lechon, roasted pork with cracklings and a million onions. The food
was good, pretty rich. Both meals came with rice and beans, the
colloquial name for them is "Morros y Christianos" or Moors and
Christians, causing Marleah to laugh hard in between sips of mojito.
We're not mojito people, but it was good. Really strong! Our waiter,
Javier, was great! He really liked us and spent a lot of time chatting
about music. He said "you look like you
like Rock n Roll", then told us
about growing up in Cuba he never dreamed he be able to see his favorite
bands but now that he lives here he goes to concerts all the time. He's
seen Rob Zombie, Five Finger Death Punch, Papa Roach, Avenged Sevenfold
etc. That's not our cup of tea, I don't even know if I spelled those
right! He was really nice though, told us about foods he ate in Cuba,
how they would eat yucca and whatever was leftover the next day would be
deep fried. It was a fun first Miami food experience!
We walked the 7 blocks back to our hotel as quick as we could
because the storm clouds had moved over our heads. It starting pouring,
POURING as soon as we got back. Cooling shower, comfy pjs, can't keep
our eyes open. Thank goodness for air conditioning.
