Motorhome News from North America 45 29th June 2007 Home at last. Immense shocks awaited our return to England with the realisation that our memories of this land had not faded nor our worst fears abated with time. Traffic swarmed the M25 from Heathrow, aggressive and impatient, travelling at high speeds we were unaccustomed to, too many people, hurrying, scurrying, in too small a space, all bound with the frustration of congestion and too few hours in each day for both work and play. Out on the fringes of London’s arteries, traffic slowed a knot or two, the roads narrowed perceptibly and the lush green of England’s new summer filled the air with its own brand of beauty: of broad-leaf trees, voluptuous hedges bounding tiny fields, small compact towns and villages, houses of brick and tile, ... read more

I have learned that I have contracted airborne trichinosis. Symptoms include stomach cramps, nausea and general whininess. Emily and I have concluded that the source of said airborne trichinosis is the Funky Mustard Corndog vehicle air freshener purchased specifically for this trip. Unfortunately, Emily’s humorous gesture has wrecked havoc on my immune system and I am skeered to ever eat mustard again. I have secretly hypothesized I actually feel like God has run me down with a team of horses because she forced me to the Booneville Bobber where I regretfully ate most of a grease and gristle omelet with a side of trucker coffee. ... read more

Today I went up to the Wild Basin area where Robbi and her parents are staying for the summer. Her dad is retired but he is a seasonal park employee and works with the water in the national parks. The whole family is spending the summer in a cabin inside the park. It is absolutely amazing at their place, all you have to do is walk out the front door and you're ready to hike around the park. We were going to try to get to Calypso Cascades before Robbi had to go to work but we didn't quite make it there. Apparently we were so excited to get moving that we did a rather poor job of reading the signs. Instead of taking the path to Copeland falls that would lead to ... read more

Well today was a pretty relaxing day all things considered. I was feeling pretty sore from the climbing yesterday so I decided to just let myself sleep in until my legs and arms were ready to face the world again. Heather had to work most of the day but she left me her bike so that I could get into town. Except it got left locked inside the garage :( So I just decided to walk into town and meet Heather on her lunch break. It took me less than an hour and it was a pretty easy 2.5 mile walk downhill. I took some nice pictures and got to see all the crazy critters that like to run across your path when you're walking!! At least they're cute! Heather took me for lunch at ... read more

I participated in the Ridin’ the Rockies HOG Touring Rally that was held June 25-28, 2007. The plan for the week was to spend some time with my cousins before the rally started then take the long way home after the rally. I rode my 2005 833 Sportster from KC to the rally and back home. The following is a ride report of the ride. It is divided in to parts because of the pictures. Didn’t sleep well last night. My neighbor, which I think is one of the asphalt paving guys that are living in the hotel, has his music loud and I couldn’t get to sleep, then I wake up at midnight and I am burning up hot. I wake up again at 3AM I am freezing. I have a headache and can not ... read more

One of the neat things (few neat things) about this Days Inn is the carports. They have a bunch of car ports that are first come, first serve for the hotel guests. I managed to get a car port every night ... read more

UntitledRegis Phew... today was ROUGH! Went for my second ever outdoor climb, and it was amazing but I had a hell of a time making the trek up to the climbing spot. We climbed the White Whale today which has three pitches (separate climbs). I've never done a multi-pitch climb before and I was really worried that I couldn't make it but there ended up being enough of a break between climbs that I was fine. In other good news I managed not to injure myself! There were four of us climbing, Jay, Heather, Robbi and me. Jay did the lead climbing up to the belay stations towing my rope (teal) and Heather's rope (pink). Once he got to the belay station and had us hooked in Heather started climbing and I followed her up towing ... read more

Colorado Day 2Regis You all may be shocked to know that I woke up at 7:30 this morning to go climbing (ok... it's 8:30 home time, but still impressive). We went into Heather's shop to pick up my gear and I managed to walk away with a Black Diamond Harness, La Sportiva Shoes (from Italy!), and a new orange Nalgene for only $100! I 3 Heather!! We met Heather's friend and coworker Mesa at the shop and headed over to Jurassic Park (yup, that's seriously the name of the place) we climbed the Index Toe Route on the Dinosaur's Foot. The climb was near Lily Lake. Since I'm such a newbie I decided to wear my flip flops figuring I'd just change into my new shoes when it was time to climb... big mistake! In Illinois ... read more

If you think you need to travel to the far reaches of Africa to experience sand dunes, you would be mistaken, but certainly not alone. If anything, our travels thus far have firmly cemented the notion that adventure and discovery can indeed take place in your own backyard. After a fantastic evening with our friend Joseph and his girlfriend, exploring bookstores downtown Denver and trying out new "hip" vegetarian dishes (seitan buffalo wings anyone?) we continued south towards Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, a relatively unknown area of geographic interest that only recently achieved national park status. Rising abruptly from the flats of San Luis Valley and tucked against the ridges of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, it is a relief to see them but their size deceives our sense of distance and it ... read more
