Colorado Story - August, 2007 The highlights of this weekend’s visit to the Kehmeier ranch were (1) animal visits of a bobcat, a porcupine, and deer, (2) a sober cyclist convention and parade, (3) and a trip to Black Canyon with the Kehmeier family. Wildlife Tracy saw a bobcat in the yard Sunday morning, but alas by the time she retrieved her camera, the bobcat was gone. We were also greeted by a porcupine that night. Nancy and I took some very pleasant morning and evening walks in the town streets of Cedaredge and she captured the deer in the picture with the rainbow. I feel like I established a relationship with one deer as we stared at each other for about 5 minutes before getting bored. Sober Cyclists Convention This weekend happened to be the ... read more

Hey Guys, Hopes you are all doing good! Currently writing this to my own email to add to my travelblog later as the travelblog website is down as it has been for ages! Gash hey! I shall add this and a previous blog update to it when its back up! Last update was at Sante Fe - that evening we had some Southwestern cuisine at a restaurant called "The Shed" - I had an enchilades and taco plate and this stuff was hot hot hot! This place also rumoured to be the home of margaritas - dont know how true that is but I had a couple of fruity ones and they were good! The next day we went to Monument Valley in Utah (one state where no alcohol is allowed - whats that all about?!).. ... read more

Distance: 6 miles Rating: Strenuous Finally, my first 14er! Admittedly, I had never really been too gung-ho about climbing any of Colorado’s 14,000 foot mountains, but after having enough friends and co-workers tell me about their experiences, I decided to give it a try. With my dad in tow (or perhaps I was the one in tow… I’m not sure) I decided to head up to Guanella Pass and climb Mt. Bierstadt, one of the “easier” 14ers. Now, when someone refers to a 14er as easy, it is of course relative to other 14ers. From a day hiking standpoint, even the easiest 14ers are steep, high altitude hikes that can be quite strenuous. The more difficult mountains are generally even longer hikes or require some sort of technical rock climbing skill. Mt. Bierstadt is certainly not ... read more

I'm sick of sitting on the bus! I hate it because my long legs spend all their time curled up into little pretzels, I desperately want to brush my teeth but can't, and all this time to think is making me depressed. Isn't it seriously sad when a person can't have too much time alone to think without feeling despondent? What's worse is that I'm worrying about the same exact things I worried about half a year ago, which was the last time I allowed myself this much time to ruminate. I just talked to a friend on the phone who could relate to my experience and I'm wondering: How many people feel this way? Are we all just trying to stay busy to still our anxious little minds? I've started to pray for peace because, ... read more

Rupert & I hit the road today. Becca drives us to the RV center outside of Denver, and when we get there are informed that we did not call ahead to tell them when we would pick up the RV so have to wait a while until they can get it ready. Which ends up being fine for us, because we needed to head to the store anyway to get some groceries & supplies. Becca as usual is a great sport about it, and comes with us before she has to run back to work. I was sad to say goodbye to her, we had such a good time together in Boulder & exploring Colorado. After a rather brief introduction to RVing, we jump in and head west on I70. Rupert is driving (that was the ... read more

Distance: 12.8 miles to junction with Wigwam Trail Rating: Moderate-Strenuous For my first hike back in Colorado after the Wyoming trip, I picked right back up where I left off with my Wilderness Area tour. I’ve mentioned the Lost Creek Wilderness in many of my entries, but this is the first time that I’ve actually entered it. The wilderness area is a vaguely boomerang-shaped, 120,700 acre plot of land in the northern part of the Pike National Forest. Lost Creek stretches over three distinct mountain ranges, the Platte River Mountains, the Kenosha Mountains, and the Tarryall Mountains. There are about 100 miles of trails, but only a few of the trailheads are easily accessible from major roads. Lost Creek itself gets its name from a series of sections where it disappears underground making it difficult to ... read more

The Final Days -- Colorado Springs The trip from Moab to Colorado Springs was to say the least very, very, very long. We started with pancakes at the camp ground and set off to take a scenic drive along the Colorado River. When we turned onto the road there was a sign warning of a bridge being out down the road and it was open for local traffic only. So needless to say we turned around and headed off down another road, only to be stopped for about 30 minutes in road construction. We wanted to make two stops along the way and we thought that being allowed to go 75 mph on the major roads would help make up time lost. As we went down the road toward our first stop, The Black Canyon ... read more

Well finally at Denver after a 20hr bus ride. My body is aching!!! Had a bit of a nightmare bus companion for the whole way! This guy was in the queue beside me at Chicago and i did my best to avoid him on the bus but he ended up sitting in front of me. He was a right charmer, thought he was a bit of a ladies man. One memorable chat up line to any girl that would listen - "come on over to my cadillac, there's room for 2". Honestly he was eyeing up anything that moved and was going up and down the bus talking and singing to everyone. A few people told him to shut up but he wasnt bothered. He'd been on the bus for 3 days right enough and ... read more
