We are now just two days out from beginning our Guatemalan adventure! We have spent the last six weeks in Aurora, Colorado with Kevin and Jaime (Drew’s sister and brother-in-law) and their daughter, Gwyneth. It has been great to spend time with some of our best friends. It’s an added bonus that we’re relatives. To those who haven’t yet heard, we are also part of a new family—our church family at Aurora Alliance Church. After praying about it and spending time with Jonas and Beth and many of the folks from the church, we have decided to make it our church home and Drew’s place of employment once we return from Guatemala. We will come back from Guatemala in the middle of January, and Drew will start working at the church as the worship pastor. ... read more

Day Three, Saturday, June 30, 2007 Had a wonderful visit with Tod & Nancy lat night and today. They gave us lots of good suggestions where and how to get to Salt Lake. We decided to stop in Garden of the Gods first. Called Jessica and she met us there. After we found her we parked and did a very short hike around the huge red rocks. Jessica was a great guide and gave us lots of information about the place. The Garden of the Gods had lots of other tourists but not too many, weather was fantastic, warm and dry, I loved it! Walked behind some Israelis for a bit, fun to hear Hebrew. One mother had a 23-day-old baby who was very cute, but very hot. A couple of dogs running around, one rabbit, ... read more

Happy Birthday Leigh!! Well since today is my last day with Heather we decided to have an awesomely girly day. We were planning on going horseback riding in the morning and then possibly climbing in the afternoon, but we got a bit of a late start. It was also WAY too hot to be doing any strenuous approaches for climbing. Instead we decided to check out the Scandinavian Festival in town with Robbie before we had to get to our 1pm horse ride and she had to get to work. The Festival took up this big park in the middle of downtown and they sold all sorts of stuff like pastries, wool clothing and tons of jewelry. After that we wandered around downtown a bit and stopped for lunch at a tourist-y little place that ... read more

Today Dillon drove into Estes and we met Heather for lunch at the sushi place close to her work. Then Dillon and I hiked up the Gem Lake trail, the views were beautiful but the lake was disappointing and mosquito-y. The hike was tons of fun though because Dillon and I had four years of catching up to do, and we sang our school songs on the walk down. I do love hanging out with fellow band nerds! After the hike Dillon headed back to Boulder so I went to the river behind Heather's shop and stuck my feet in to cool off....then made some phone calls to make people jealous ;) When Heather got off work we went for a quick climb near Mary's Lake. Heather learned to set up anchors and I just ... read more

Every summer there are a lot of festivals and events in downtown Denver. During this summer before traveling, I had an opportunity to enjoy one, the Cherry Blossom Festival. This is in Sakura Square, kind of a Japanese block. The event of course is a Japanese cultural festival. Overall, I was able to see some really interesting things. The festival actually took place partially inside a Buddhist Temple, which allowed for further exploration. As all festivals, this one had food, drinks and numerous things to buy. Being a Japanese festival, there of course was sushi for sale, but they also had green tea ice cream. This seemed to be pretty popular, and unfortunately I forget to try some. Besides that, numerous crafts, culture books, toy swords and of course, anime for sale. In fact, you ... read more

The sun glints off the the bumper of the vehicle in front of us and I flip the visor down to shield my eyes. Andras has the windows rolled partially down trying to find the perfect compromise between the heat and the fumes of exhaust. I would not have guessed that this park would be so popular but there it is, the long line of cars inching closer to the entrance station. Nor would I have guessed that it was so easy to escape the crowds and actually find the relative solitude needed to appreciate where we were, but then again I forget we have one thing that many tourists here don't--a strong desire to get out of the car and move around. Time to go back to civilization....sort of. Mesa Verde is one of those ... read more

Day Two, Part Two, Friday, June 29, 2007 Funny, we can keep in contact through the internet at a rest stop in the middle of who knows where… says Elan, in reference to our previous observation of calling while on the road to AK and to MA. Crossed the border into Colorado. Scenery is still the same. Elan is rather disappointed that we are not seeing mountains yet, he wanted them to be there as soon as we crossed the border. Oh well, the 75 MPH speed limit has made up for it he says. Maine license plate is mine! Indiana is mine too! Though to be fair to Elan he does spot more than I do as he is driving and I am enjoying the scenery, which as you know by now still has not ... read more

Made it to the foothills of the Rockies last night just in time to see the sun set behind the mountains. Gorgeous! Pulled into camp, got situated and crashed out promptly. Woke up and went for a run (note: dehyrdration comes on more quickly in higher elevations. Oops.) On our way through Colorado to Utah. Iced coffee is first on the agenda for this leg of the journey.... read more

Distance: 10 miles Rating: difficult-strenuous For the second hike of my “Wilderness Area Tour,” I headed to the southeastern part of the Eagles Nest Wilderness above the towns of Dillon/Silverthorne and Frisco. At 133,688 acres, Eagles Nest is one of the larger wilderness areas in Colorado. Running through the area are the impressive mountains of the Gore Range, several of which are visible to drivers heading west from the Eisenhower Tunnel. One of the most recognizable peaks is dome-shaped Buffalo Mountain above Silverthorne. The I-70 corridor and the Blue River Valley segment the area around Eagles Nest into several distinct mountain ranges. After leaving the Continental Divide, the Williams Fork Mountains rise to the north, while the Gore and Ten Mile Ranges climb to the west of the Blue River. The Eagles Nest Wilderness encompasses much ... read more
