Water is always better in a special glass!
Nancy & Tod's special water glass from LOTHR. Day Three, Saturday, June 30, 2007
Had a wonderful visit with Tod & Nancy lat night and today. They gave us lots of good suggestions where and how to get to Salt Lake. We decided to stop in Garden of the Gods first. Called Jessica and she met us there. After we found her we parked and did a very short hike around the huge red rocks. Jessica was a great guide and gave us lots of information about the place.
The Garden of the Gods had lots of other tourists but not too many, weather was fantastic, warm and dry, I loved it! Walked behind some Israelis for a bit, fun to hear Hebrew. One mother had a 23-day-old baby who was very cute, but very hot. A couple of dogs running around, one rabbit, not much else in the way of wildlife. Scenery was amazing! One way you look you see the rolling hills and the other the mountains. Clear blue sky and white clouds with the sun reflecting off them.
After saying goodbye to Jessica we drove around the park and headed towards I-25 south. We drove through Old Colo. Springs, mostly shops lining the streets,
Morning coffee break
Notice the other sign in the back? might be fun to stroll along if one had the inclination. Elan says it looked like the Jewish quarter near Molly.
Lucy was guiding us to I-25 when we saw a Dunkin Donuts, Elan made a turn and a turn to go back to it and Lucy patiently recalculated how to get us back on track. We turned her voice off to make our stop. The woman behind the counter was very nice and was asking why we were taking pictures of the store. I explained that it was a stop I made most every time we found one when we travel Outside, as there are no Dunkin Donuts anymore in Alaska and Dad used to hang out there with his buddies! The woman’s daughter was there too and got to talking to Elan about the neon green Sobe smoothie. After Elan went out to the car the girl asked how old he was, she thought he was 18!
Lucy got her voice back and faithfully guided us back on track then got very quiet after telling us the next turn was in 90 miles.
Begin climbing the mountains, we are at the southern end of the
Sangre de Cristo mountains. There are dark clouds behind us with occasional lighting flashes but in front of us is blue sky and fluffy white clouds. The sun is coming out as we pass through Ft. Garland. Tried to call Molly up here but lost service. We’ll try again when we get down the other side of the Continental Divide. That sounds so grand! Going through Blanca we passed what seemed to be a steam engine. Denny, what do you think?
Well we are the other side of the Continental divide but there was no sign so we guessed. Actually Elan finally let me drive and so:
1. I drive slower.
2. He doesn’t navigate.
3. He played his PSP.
4. We missed the Continental Divide. He took a picture of somewhere after that.
I saw a herd of horses running around a field stopped and made Elan take some pictures. I also made him take pictures when I thought the sky was particularly beautiful or when we went through the tunnels. Poor kid wanted to sleep and I kept getting excited about the beautiful sights.
It got dark and so we changed drivers again and he
got to drive a bit faster, though we were down out of the mountains already, which was helpful. We thought to stay in Pagosa Springs but then Elan wanted to keep driving and I was fine with that too. Tod & Nancy suggested that the baked goods in Pagosa were very good but everything was shut so we’ll have to eat there another time!
Drove on through Durango and found a place to stay in Cortez. Nighttime driving is not my cup of tea though Elan does very well with driving and I try to keep calm… sometimes I succeed better than other times. The moon was full and quite lovely; we drove west under the Big Dipper. There are lots of motorcycles on the road too, well during the day anyway.

Keep writing -- it's great to hear from you
My brother and I drove cross country from Boston to LA in the '70s. You are bringing it all back and it was a great trip! We didn't have Lucy, just maps. No motel reservations. Stopped at dusk. The blog is just great!!! My computer was down for more than a week so I'm catching up with you. Elan, you asked how to make your mother sleep? Take away her coffee? Or keep it decaf after lunch. Love to you both. Louise
