Its halloween night and im sitting on the internet in Loris parents house and i keep getting interrupted with all the neighbourhood kids coming to the door and chiming in unison "trick or treat" some of them are cute and remember their manners but some of them are just plain monsters! (literally) i started off just offering the bowl thats pilled high with chocolates and popcorn but the kids were grabbiing handfuls and i started to fear that there would be none left for me!! Lori suggested that i just hand out one candy to each kid and thats been working much better. Everytime i answer the door i also get a candy so its all working out fine! Its a bit of a fight with the dog, Lulu everytime the doorbell goes though. She gets ... read more

Death Valley 28/10/05 We headed back into California via Las Vegas (managed to drive straight past it this time!) and drove into Death Valley. The temperature was 82F (and no, I don't know what that is in real money) and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. We saw loads of cyclists, it's like they were there to taunt us. Apparently there is a ride tomorrow, out of Death Valley into Nevada and back via the northern end of the valley - grrrrr, not fair, wanna get back on my bike, sob. We heard a very interesting talk on weather conditions in the valley at the visitor centre, apparently there was a huge rain storm this spring and they got enough water to kayak in. This occurs about once in every 100 years and gave rise ... read more

Greetings friends, It appears that I repeated myself on the last two blogs that I wrote. (Be it I may have been the only person to notice I went on about Lake Taupo and the Tongario crossing twice, but still!) THIS was an uncharacteristic error and I aim to not repeat this this again. hehe - enough of that old pony... My travels continue into the Islands of Fiji, formerly of British Crown sovereignty and surely the furthest point from Britain within the old Empire? hmmm - Im not sure - did we have the Moon also? nah! ok Before I venture into the islands here, I did go out in Christchurch, New Zealand- attempting to go to a dance club, but it was a Tuesday and things don't hot up (so I've been told) in ... read more

This morning we joined our group of 11 other intrepid adventures plus our group leader, Fitz from Lousiana, for our trek across the States in a Ford van complete with massive roof rack. First, we headed through LA and California to Death Valley. We stopped at "Badwater", a salt lake 282ft below sea level and the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere. On our way into the "Furnace Creek Campsite" we saw our first Roadrunner (meep! meep!)... We set up camp for the first time that night and spent the evening getting to know people around the campfire.... read more

We came back to Hollywood on friday night and checked back into the hostel just off the boulevard. The reason we had returned was for 2 concerts over the weekend... On Saturday night we went to see Queen & Paul Rodgers at the amazingly recognisable Hollywood Bowl (remember the Monty Python show?). They played a great mix of old favourites plus some good old Free/Bad Company songs. The highlight, however, had to be be when Brian May introduced "a local boy done gone" to the stage and SLASH walked on to play along to "Can't get enough of your love". After the show, we were herded onto the wrong shuttle bus and had an impromtu tour of Universal City before persuading our bus driver to drop us back at the bowl once all the passengers had ... read more

Greetings from Hollywood! Caitlin and I have safely arrived in LA. Our flight from the East Coast was a shaky start to our global adventures. Melissa (Caitlin's girlfriend) had kindly agreed to drive us from MA to Bradley International in Connecticut. After a hectic morning at the Head of the Charles, they picked me up from the Starfish house of love in JP and we quickly got on our way! Our initial excitement was soon dampened, literally. There was pouring rain, slick road and stand-still traffic on Route 9. To top it all off, we realized in the car that we had miscommunicated about the departure time. Our flight was scheduled to leave at 5:30 instead of 6:30! Melissa's excellent driving skills and her all-weather tires were put to the test. I placed a frantic phone ... read more

We took a greyhound south from LA to continue the festivities in San Diego. Finally, after travelling all year we managed to stay at a YMCA (500 West) and it wasn't half bad. In fact, it was built in 1924 as the Army YMCA (there's lots of military still in San Diego) but now it's really just a 'hybrid hotel' (according to their literature)...no we didn't understand the difference either! We took in the sights: Santa Fe station, maritime museum and harbour (where they've got a very cool cold war soviet submarine), Embarcadero waterfront area (where the large cruise ships and also the USS Midway) dock, Seaport Village, the Gaslamp quarter (where we made it to the Hard Rock Cafe in time for happy hour margaritas)... Also, we spent a day at the 'world-famous' zoo with ... read more

We moved to a hotel (wa-hey! towels and hairdryer and coffee and a fridge and TV and Air Con and everything!) on Sunset Boulevard in the fashionable area of West Hollywood (aka WeHo) for the long weekend of Tim's 30th birthday: - breakfast in bed (and strawberries and a poem and a card and a balloon from Emma) - a couple of bottles of California Champagne (we say, "better than the French stuff!") - lobster & steak and dinner at the famous and incredibly cool 'Rainbow Bar & Grill' (where they lived up to their reputation and played Poison and Guns'n'Roses all night) and Tim lived out his rock and roll fantasies! - embarassment at the the famous and incredibly cool 'Rainbow Bar & Grill' as the waitresses brought a large piece of chocolate cake with ... read more
