14-17/10/05 Mountain View, CA We travelled over the Sierra Nevada to Mountain View in the San Francisco Bay area to visit Tom and Julia. Vernon and Tom were flatmates when both were doing PhDs at Bangor University, but as with so many friendships we haven't seen each other for years. On Friday we went to Amici's for a pizza and were treated to free entertainment when a customer collapsed on the floor, he seemed to recover, stood up, left the building and promptly collapsed again. The staff called 911 and two fire tenders turned up with a paramedic on board. We spent Saturday searching for new bike helmets as ours, whilst they could be used as strange and interesting hanging baskets, are useless for head protection since the crash. The search took longer than expected as ... read more

Obviously, Buff and I are home now. We got back the 2nd of October. There just wasn't time during the trip to actually write about the trip and we don't know how we would have added photos to blogs...so lucky you! I have gone back and done blogs with photos as I would have, if time had allowed. Now you can read, not read, comment, or not. Thanks for the comments so far Patti & Vivian. This is all there will be. No viewing of CDs or slides or photos or long rambling tales of what happened. Buff & I have already discussed that we are going to be on the alert to try and not be obnoxious about the trip - particularly about "Oh, we were there! Look, Castle Combe. Remember that?" etc. etc. EXCEPT ... read more

The forecast for today was 80 degrees plus and clear skies - a perfect day to take our new Wilderness Systems Kayak for a cruise. We bought a Tarpon model 130T, it's a tandem for double the fun. Originally, my brother-in-law Hugh and his lovely wife Nicolette were to join us as they too have recently bought kayaks. The call came early this morning, it was Nicolette, Hugh was not feeling well and they would have to cancel. The kayak was loaded onto the car the night before so we headed out for Lake Clementine ourselves. Lake Clementine is only 15 minutes from our house - I just hate those long drives to recreate. After arriving at the lake, we paddled for a couple hours before finding a secluded cove for lunch. We were enjoying our ... read more

We arrived in LA on Columbus day morning at 5.30am and took the 'Supershuttle' to our hostel in Hollywood. We saw the sunrise on the famous Hollywood sign on the way. On our first evening we walked along Hollywood Boulevard to the premiere of a new film called "North Country" at the famous Chinese Theatre. We hoped to see some stars and were not disappointed as both oscar-winner Charlize Theron and Leeds-armoury-advertising Sean Bean turned up! North Country Premiere The next day we went to Venice Beach, saw the (very small) "Muscle Beach" but no-one was working out (all the bodybuilders probably got scared when they saw Tim) and then walked along the 'Ocean Front Walk' to Santa Monica beach. We watched pelicans fishing in the the Pacific ocean, visited the famous pier and then headed ... read more

Sorry this has taken so long to post, we are experiencing computer difficulties, first we couldn't access the website, then we couldn't upload photos. 05/10/05 Lone Pine We spent the morning in Bishop sorting out Hospital paperwork and checking e-mail in the library. When we left the library I had a parking ticket for "parking more than 18 inches from the kerb" since I was parked on the left side of the road facing in the wrong direction. We went to the Police station to see if we could pay the fine (and also to check if there were any other laws which we might inadvertantly break), and after a brief discussion the nice police officer let us off the ticket on the grounds that we Brits drive on the wrong side of the road anyway ... read more

Hello All, Thanks for resending the blog stuff. I somehow misplaced it. Anyways... California is great! Being from Boston I am NOT used to this perfect weather every single day. Its almost frustrating. My work is about a 45 minute walk from where Aaron and I are living so they gave me a bus pass. But on nice mornings I say to myself "self, today is a nice day, I think I'll walk". So I have pretty much been late to work everyday since it is always nice and I never take the bus. Work is great and is usually entertaining to say the least. If you forgot, I am working at a shelter for homeless families. They stay for 6 months at a time so pretty much make the shelter their home for that time. ... read more

Our final stop in the US, mostly for the purpose of catching the plane to Sydney. We stayed in a Hostel called the 'Cotel' on Venice Beach. The location was good but the Hostel was bad with it's dodgy plumbing banging all night and keeping us awake. To recover from the nights we took it pretty easy in LA lying on the beach, sitting in cafes in Santa Monica and occasionally making the effort to actually do something like go roller blading along the sea front with the beautiful people. Sara was very pleased with herself being the better skater. We met up with Adam ( ex colleague ) a couple of times who was out there working on a Sony Pictures motion capture shoot. We took a quick tour of the studio and saw my ... read more

Sara - We spent 3 days in San Francisco. We managed to book into a pretty good hostel, recommended to us in New York, called the Green Tortoise. Standard room, free internet access, breakfast, an evening meal 3 nights a week and free beer on Wednesdays. Plus an opportunity to wash our clothes. We set out to discover 'The City'. We checked out the usual tourist attractions. Rode bicycles over the Golden Gate Bridge, quite a long way you know, bought coffee in a starbucks, rode on a tram (although I've done that in Blackpool), had cocktails at the top of the Bank of America and toured Alcatraz with several hundred other people in headsets - the atmosphere was electric. I preferred it to New York.... read more

It’s almost here, only one day until I leave for New Zealand. I have been looking forward to this moment since I first got the idea to go to New Zealand to live and work for a year. I am completely ready to go except for the fact that I haven't packed yet. Everything is clean and ready to go I just have yet to go through the actual process of putting my things into my suitcase. Packing for an entire year creates a slight dilemma however because it is quite hard to figure out everything I will need for a year. I am trying not to bring too much, but a year is a long time and what if I decide not to pack that pair of sweats and then later on I realize how ... read more

Planning for our trip...that is what we have been doing lately. We have made so many changes to our itinerary already, and are still trying to figure out airfare. We want our trip to remain spontanious, but also want to spend as little money as possible on tickets and transportation. As I am writing this, I am actually sitting in an i-net cafe nestled right at the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. My husband is climbing Mt. Whitney, the tallest Mt. in the contiguous United States! He stared this morning at 3am, and hopes to be done by 3pm. There is snow up there though, which could slow him down (I made him rent some cramp-ons yesterday...just to ease my mind). So, I thought I'd take this opportunity to set up our travel blog instead of ... read more
