Well, dear friends, Evi and I are leaving on our trip in 5 days. Currently we are packing, storing, cleaning, planning, but we're ahead of the game! On October 11 we fly to Zurich, Evi's city of birth, and home of her brother, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. Her parents are in Basel, one hour away by train. We're excited but frankly a bit nervous about the great unknown in front of us. However, as a great philosopher once said, it's easier to control the present than the future, so we'll just take what comes our way. (Oh, that philosopher was me!)... read more

We'd had enough of National Parks by now so we decided to head for the coast at Monterey a few hours drive south of San Francisco. This was probably the nicest town/city we visited in the US. We camped for three nights at the town's campsite up the hill 45 mins walk from the Marina. Sara- We explored the small seaside resort and the highlight was the Monterey Aquarium. All the critters were mainly local and they had a thing for jelly fish (although we're not entirely sure that most of the 'tanks' weren't just monitors with groovy screensavers). We got down with the kids and watched feeding time at penguin central and otter island. However our favourite interactive activity was stroking the Bat Rays who seemed to like it. (Although later in the cafe my ... read more

FRESNO. I complete my fast food tour with a 'massive meat sandwich' breakfast from Burger King. - Fantastic! I am sure that the reason for the 'obesity' epedemic is the availability, abundance, and low cost (relatively) of the fast food restaurants. They are everywhere and they are cheap, but most importantly - you don't have to tip! Starbucks for coffee again as we have given up looking for anywhere else (it just leads to disappointment) and when we explained to the young girl at the register where we were from and where we were going, she asked (with the most bewildered look on her face) 'What made you come to Fresno?' (even the locals dont see the reason to visit, it seems). We explained that we were driving from Yosemite to LA and ran out of ... read more

We spent the night in Fresno in a very dingy university motel. The room (supposedly) a non smoking room reeked of cigarette smoke. Luckily we spent as little time there as possible, arriving quite late and leaving very early. The 5th of October was our last day, and most hectic. We had to drive about 260 miles, check in take the car back, go to the post office, etc etc. There was the leaving expensive equipment in the hire car incident! I think Mick ran a half marathon that day in jeans. Boy he was stinky!! We eventually got on the plane, and of course I slept like a log again (HA HA, Mick hates that)! The Lufthansa plane was much more modern than the creaky old United plane we had to the USA. The German ... read more

Well, seeing as how Trent has three computers and two are dedicated to WOW, this computer might as well be put to use updating the blog. Had a good sleep last night, Trent has a great couch, we took off to Anaheim around 9:45 to avoid rush hour (it worked) got to Disneyland around 10:30 -lots has changed since 1995 which was cool, I didnt actually go on anything new, but about 50% of the rides we did do had been revamped for the 50 year anniversary, so that was cool. Space mountain was the highlight, indiana jones in second place. Pretty typical day there i thought, Ryan fell in love with Belle from beauty in the beast, and I managed to get some paparazzi shots of her from a distance whilst she was swarmed by ... read more

The next day we headed inland for Yosemite National Park. Of course even after going to bed relatively early we still didn't leave early enough. We had a huge lunch along the way Ribs and Catfish! Once again the lack of road signs caused us trouble! We arrived at Yosemite in the mid afternoon and it was absolutely spectacular! We could hardly drag ourselves away, and once again vowed to come back for at least a week! Every corner it seemed we had to stop and take more photos! When it became dark we had no choice but to leave, so we headed for Fresno (yay)!... read more

Day 3 We packed our things and jumped into the supershuttle (Very Very Hung over sounds of the night before a bleak distance memory). It appears that our driver has no idea of the road rules and nearly runs down several people, millimetres from people leaning of the cable cars and running all red lights, once we get outta the traffic we would be doing upwards of 80-85 miles an hour (130-135kms) these guys are crazy fuckers, we get to the airport and catch flight 1 of our two flight stretch from San Fran to Denver Colorado on schedule.. this however was all about to change... we arrive at Denver as planned for our transfer and hope on our flight to MSP, we make it as far as the runway then the plan grinds to a ... read more

Up as early as we could manage (~6.00 am) and hit the road (~8.00 am) to head north over Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods the first stop of the day. We took the wrong exit (again) and got off early (will get the hang of the system eventually). Once off the highway the drive to Muir Woods was VERY nice! (with the top down of course) and the trees were SPECTACULAR! A coffee and a (very) salty pretzel and back on the road . . . So what do you have for lunch when time is short and you're racing the sun to Yosemite National Park? All you can eat ribs of course! I only managed four ribs as I was trying not to be a glutten, besides I had a long drive still ahead. ... read more

02-03/10/05 Eight wheels to Long Beach We headed south out of Bishop on the 395 and drove to Ridgecrest, where Carol, Rita and Mikayla were staying after a family wedding. We met quite a few of Rita's relatives and spent an hour or so chatting about our trip and the crash before we kidnapped Carol and made her navigate us to Long Beach. We spent the evening talking over news, old and new, and generally putting the world to rights. Carol and I did our degrees together in Portsmouth, England and Carol pointed out that it was probably twenty years ago to the day that we first met - LAWKS!! The next day we both slept late before finding space in the garage for the bikes. Later we headed to the Long Beach Aquarium to ooh ... read more

Today we had a few things to do, we went to Haight Ashbury for breakfast, then went to the park near the Golden Gate bridge, then we went on a tour of Alcatraz, phew. Alcatraz was a little creepy, and was absolutly packed with tourists. After that we just walked up and down the main tourist strip looking for souveneres and the like - beer for Mick!! We actually had an early night for a change. ... read more
