After visiting Point Lobos today, I decided to make the 30 mile or so drive to Big Sur to experience that stretch of Highway 1 that I have not yet seen. Turns out Big Sur is mostly a camping community, and is not right on the coast. However, most of the road leading to Big Sur from Carmel is right along the ocean.... read more

The highway 1 runs directly along the Pacific coastline while the main traffic takes the faster inland Highway 101 or the Interstate 5 in the central valley. So after Santa Barbara the highway is hardly used. We prepared our first camping breakfast at one of the benches with nice views on the beach and left late morning to drive to the Big Sur State Park 100 miles South of San Francisco. A camping neighbor had recommended us to stop by at famous Hearst castle. We never had heard of it, but since it was on the way we decided to have a look. It seemed to be a very big attraction from the enormous size of the parking lot. We were late for the last tour, but made it to a National Geographic movie about the ... read more

March 8, 2009 Carmel has to be one of the most charming towns in the country. I believe the shops and homes on the hilly tree-lined streets have jumped out of some fairy tale. We had breakfast with Frank and Gloria and Frank’s Fresno high school buddies at the popular Katy’s Place. Joe and I shared the Swedish pancakes (crepes filled with berries) and if we would be so lucky to live here, we’d become Katy’s regulars. We all went back to the beautiful house where the Fresno gang was staying for an hour, then Joe and I headed south down Highway 1. We’ve seen a lot of beautiful sights in the past few years, and the Big Sur area rivals them all. I’d been on this stretch a couple of times before, but today was ... read more

Part 2 of our road trip around central California! Replace the snow with the sea and keep the colorful and dramatic feel and you got Big Sur! Hard to resist to the charm & natural beauty of the area ...Pacific Ocean on one side and Santa Lucia Mountains rising on the other...add to this a twisting highway 1 and cone peaks and it makes the sceneries absolutely fantastic! Spent two days in the area before driving back to San Francisco and in a few words here are the highlights of our trip to Big Sur (pictures always speak best when it comes to sceneries!) - admiring the sceneries ...ok, not very original but while driving on what has been quoted as the 2nd most scenic road in US, cant help but stopping frequently to fully enjoy ... read more

This past Sunday we both had off of work in time to head out on a small road trip to do some hiking. We didn't know at first that it would turn into a hiking adventure, and we especially didn't know it would turn into such a mental and physical excursion! We just had a general idea that we wanted to go hang around some nature and trees and that we have heard so much about Big Sur. So, Sunday afternoon we packed up my car (Rhonda the Honda), and prepared our traveling car-sleep-pod. This is a fun way to turn your car into a super-awesome sleeping area by folding down the back seats so you have access to the trunk. Then you load tons of pillows and blankets on the back side of the seats ... read more

Or at least that's what the cycling book calls it... We've just finished cycling over (and I mean up and over!!) the much hyped Big Sur coastline. We've been hearing about it since we reached the coast - as though it is the pride and joy of the Pacific coastline in America. Whenever chatting to someone along the way and we mention we are heading south, we've seen faces light up and eyes start to twinkle as people begin to describe the Big Sur coastline. "If you think this is spectacular, wait until you get to Big Sur!!" And... it did a pretty good job living up to its reputation! From the cliff-hanging rides over a 1000 feet above the turquoise waters below, to the remote beaches - it's been pretty fantastic. So fantastic in fact ... read more

Big Sur Campgrounds, California Last summer my mom, my little sister, my best friend Ramo and I went on vacation to California. It was the first time any of us had ever been to this amazing state. Before going on this trip, I had this whole big picture of what I thought it was going to be like, but most of the time everything turns out to be the complete opposite of what I think. I pictured California as all ocean and beaches. It turns out that there are woods and mountains and deserts. Nothing I would’ve thought would be there. We stayed at the Big Sur Campgrounds and I’m telling you, it is absolutely stunning. We set up camp right away. After unloading everything from the car, we walked down to the clear blue river ... read more

Up and out early this morning (for a change) - even stooped to Macca's for breakfast before visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium. By Asian standards (Singapore & Bangkok) this aquarium is on the small side, but for what it lacked in size, it more than made up for in its unique exhibits. They have a Sea Otter tank and we managed to catch feeding time - well, talk about CUTE!!! These little guys are absolutely gorgeous! They lay floating on their backs and use their hands to get the fish out of it's shell. When the trainer then gave them some food lodged inside a hunk of ice, the Otter whacked the hell out of it on the side of pane of glass as hard as he could to break it apart. None of this chewing ... read more

Well Pat and I have left San Francisco and we are in Big Sur. Before leaving San Francisco we picked up our 4 x 4 and a tent and we then headed south on the Highway 1. The Highway 1 is a coastal road and it is amazing. We are now camping in Big Sur which is on the coast and is a massive forest. Unfornately just before Pat and I arrived 92% of the forest burnt down in forest fires or as the locals say "it got toasted". We must however be staying in the 8% of the forest which was untouched by the fire as the campsite is fab and is in the middle of all the massive Redwood Trees and right beside a creek. Although the location is fantastic our bed isn't! We ... read more
