After being turned back at the gates of fabled Esalen Institute on several occasions—apparently it's not okay to just "come in and check it out"—this weekend I was at last welcomed. All it took was a check for $800. Debra and I were attending a series of writer's workshops put on by an obscure literary magazine called The Sun. Neither of us had Hemingway aspirations. Our ambitions didn't extend much beyond the Esalen bath house. At the gate we were handed a map of the grounds. The names of the buildings on the map told the history of the place. We would be staying in the Murphy House, which is next to Price House. Michael Murphy and his fellow Stanford alum, Dick Price, founded Esalen in the early 1960s. During orientation we were told ... read more

$4 a gallon.... yep we filled up at the local gas station and that's the price over here so it doesn't feel like you have to sell your firstborn to pay to fill up the tank. You have to be careful because Diesel pump is green here and black at home Today we drove along the Big Sur from Carmel to Morro stopping at the many view points along the way. The vistas were simply breathtaking and we took photos at each. We saw a Vulture and a dead wolf on the roadside. Once again a beautifully sunny blue sky meant we could drive top down. The roads were windy and there were some pretty steep drops on the passenger side which made me really nervous as Martin insisted on fiddling with his ipod shuffle as ... read more

Highway 1 to Ventura How lovely. Blue sky had returned when we woke which was great news as the plan was to drive all the way down the coast, down Route 1, with the car roof open as that is just what our car, the Mustang, was designed for. A little chilly at first and Bob turned the heating on but quite soon the sun warmed up and so did we. A wonderful drive and I don’t think we have ever before made so many stops to admire the views. It had been suggested that the best way to do the drive was South to North but it was far better the other way going south as all stopping spots are on the right, coastal, side of the road and therefore far better accessed when driving ... read more

Geo: 36.2703, -121.806Got to Pfieffer Big Sur State Park and got checked in. It is a beautiful drive back to where our campsite was. You travel through an area that is thick with the redwoods and so lovely. Our campsite was very near the ablution area and we did not have anyone on either side of us.We talked to the people across from us because they had a Habitat, King Dome and Base Camp set up. Found out they were a group from an REI store outside of Los Angeles and were trying out the tents in order to be better salesmen. What a great idea and way to really get to know the tents.Talked to another couple across from us and she warned us of the jays that are quite opportunistic and will investigate any ... read more

Leaving our wonderful friends in Marin County we headed south to Ginger and Don's beautiful home in Portola Valley where we shared our joys of gardening and music as well as taking to the waters in their hot tub and swimming pool. They have even loaned us their Miata to do some last minute shopping in SF - what fun! Our tour continues at the Esalen Institute south of Big Sur, CA, where our friend, Pam, is leading a weekend workshop on "Unfinished Business." I discovered my "Unfinished Business" was exploring strange lands and friendly people with the freedom to be flexible and spontaneous in the quest. Of course we took full advantage of the Esalen waters.... read more

After departing Texas I made a whirlwind 1 night stop in Los Angeles to catch a Lakers game. I've never really had much interest in seeing LA, also skipping it last time I was in the States. I'm happy for someone to convince me why I need to see the Hollywood walk of fame or the Hollywood sign however. Staples Center was the first arena I had encountered that had its own McDonalds inside. The Lakers overcame a spirited effort by the Brooklyn Nets much to my dismay. Being surrounded by so many casual fans, bandwagoners, idiots and enemies at once was a little off-putting. A couple of highlights included one Lakers fan querying his mate, 'Who is this bench guy (for the Lakers)?' and chanting 'MVP! MVP!' to Kobe Bryant 11 games into the season. ... read more

... read more
