Geo: 36.5552, -121.923 Day Two was rather action packed- much more so than expected. We just sort of wandered up and back down the coast doing one thing and then another whenever we felt like with no general plan. Chris and I have been to this area a lot on previous trips but it was fairly new for the others. We started off the morning by heading to a couple of my favorite haunts in the area- Carmel-by-the-Sea and Point Lobos. We got coffee and window-shopped. For lunch, we picnicked at Point Lobos, one of my favorite nostalgic places. I grew up going here a lot with my mom on short hikes. We walked one of the trails along the rocks and water. After that, we decided to head south again. We stopped at the Big ... read more

Day 2 We haven't been to Big Sur since summer 2011 when we drove from San Francisco to LA and made the catastrophic mistake of not allowing time to stop off and enjoy Big Sur. This year we are pushed for time too but are giving ourselves the full day on our drive from SLO to Monterey to enjoy the sights on offer. Without fail this is my favourite drive of all time, no doubt! A lot of people wonder which is the best route North - South (San Fran to LA) or South to North. Well really the route is just so beautiful you can't really go wrong but if I was being honest my favourite is North to South as you are on the right side for the ocean and the views are undisturbed ... read more

At 4.30 am we were both awake in the van parked outside the Airbnb on Treasure Island, so we decided to make an early start and avoid the traffic. By 6am we were on route 1, so stopped to catch up on a couple of hours sleep. From then on we were having early nights and late mornings. Although sunny during most days, it is autumn here, and so it gets dark about 6.30. It is usually a bit misty in the morning, so it is nicer to stay in bed until the sun breaks through. When we stayed on an official campsite we could have a fire in the evening, but several nights we just found a quiet side road where we could park in a lay by for the night. A funny thing that ... read more

State Park Vétéran.... read more

Steve chauffeured us around again today--down the coast to Big Sur. Dana was a little nervous on some of those curves at the edge of the cliffs! These were the views we came to California for!! All these years, we have only seen it in pictures or movies. Needless to say, we went crazy taking pictures! Mom took us to the Restaurant at Ventana for lunch, a wonderful place on a high cliff overlooking the ocean (for an early celebration of our birthdays). The food was superb, the landscaped patio we ate on was very serene, and we had a very relaxing time, even though the fog blocked the view of the ocean. We had to take some "David pictures", as we affectionately call pictures of our meals. Stopped at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park for ... read more

Geo: 36.2703, -121.806Up and decided to go to Julia Pfieffer Burns Park and take a nice walk. It was a beautiful morning and we were early and so there were not many people about. We were glad to see the waterfall was still flowing into the sand. From there we hiked over to the primitive camping area. Did not go all the way down into the camping area because there were several groups camped there. Got back to the car and had ourselves a breakfast of cheese, fruit, and crackers while watching all the people arriving to go hiking. There was one of the many bikers we saw along the Highway 1 having a bite to eat before going on a hike. Seems to be an awful grueling bike ride but guess if you like that ... read more

Geo: 36.2703, -121.806There is so much to see as you travel up and down the coastline. We were very lucky to have time to drive up and down the coastline and take in the view from several of the pull outs. We were so fortunate to have some nice weather and so we were able to enjoy the scenery to entire time we were there.... read more

Geo: 36.2703, -121.806Heading south on Hwy 1 to Pfieffer Big SurPaul had planned to go to Vacaville but at the last minute changed his mind and so we got up and headed out from the Outlet. Of course we had to make a stop at the Berkeley Bowl and the place was a madhouse. Forget getting your shopping cart through the produce section. Robert scored at the bargain table with a huge bag of asparagus with some cucumbers in it as well. The weather was beautiful once again and so the drive down the coast was very nice. The traffic was heavy for the people heading back into San Francisco but for us it was smooth sailing. We stopped in Monterey at our favorite place across from McDonalds and fixed a lunch of several different types of ... read more

Beyond the quirkiness of San Francesco and the epic landscape of Yosemite, Maria Chiara and I had a few days to experience other parts of Northern California: four world famous wine regions and a drive down California's famous Pacific Coast, along the appropriately named "Highway One". America is brilliant - where even driving on the motorway is a cultural experience. We drove south through Silicon Valley towards San Jose, all part of the vast conurbation of the Bay area, the freeway was six lanes wide at times and we were forever passing through spaghetti junctions. Cool!!! Eventually we left the city behind, drove over a mountain, through a forest and hit the coast at Santa Cruz. This beach town is a complete antidote to Riviera-style pretentiousness. With the Pacific Ocean and towering palm trees on one ... read more
