The ride through the Big Sur (Northern California) was breath taking. Whether one looks to the water or the land, everything is beautiful. At first we were disappointed that the weather was misty but we soon realized it added to the scenery... Looking down to the water from the huge cliffs was scary. We also saw some zebra on the way to the Hearst Castle. Mr Hearst was an excentric business man who built this castle to entertain well known people. He was a media mogul in the early 1900's. See the pictures for yourself. The zebra were part of his personal zoo...... read more

This was gonna be the first day of our great tour of the western USA. We were planning to head south first, going to LA, then forge on into Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and then back to California. We were planning on starting early, going from Mountain View to LA. Well, lets just say that didn't work out. For various reasons we were delayed, among other things, Tom invited us to yet another great lunch. Me, my brother Einar, my friend Oyvind and Tom were joined by Blake, the company lawyer. We had a lovely lunch at the chinese place on Castro in MV. We finally headed out about 15.00, and headed south towards the coast. We arrived at Big Sur in order to catch the sunset. We also caught a glimpse of some gray whale, ... read more

After a restful night in Salina, we once again headed south on Route 1. Soon we were rounding the many curves in the road as it follows the 90 mile stretch of coastline that is known as Big Sur. The day started out cloudy and foggy as is often the case in this area. By the time we had arrived at the Bixby Bridge, we could see some hints of blue over the mountains and were hopeful that the sky would soon clear. When we arrived at Andrew Molera State Park, the skies were perfectly clear and the weather had become quite pleasant. The beach was at the end of a one mile trail through meadows of wildflowers. Upon arriving on the beach we were treated to an unspoiled shoreline that full of driftwood, seaweed, and ... read more

Waking at 5am to the cold, we started the car and started making our way along the beautiful coastal road, lit by the incredibly bright moon. Making it to Los Angeles for lunch time, we had a quick cooling shower and then went exploring. Found the Kodak theatre, famous for hosting the Oscars, the walk of fame, the 'HOLLYWOOD' sign and many other camera highlights. But the main reason for us being there was to see the band 'The Small Change' playing at the 'Knitting Factory'. Even with only one band member, Greg (unfortunately the others were stuck at the airport after the London foiled plot delayed their plane), the 'band' still played a number of tracks off the new album (which we knew as this was the only CD we had for the 300+ ... read more

My job was simple, she said. My brother was having a birthday, that part he knew. It was the surprise party he was clueless about. I am from Omaha, visiting my brother for his birthday. He and his family live in the Monterey Bay area. To get him out of the house, I ask him to take me sight seeing in the area. Not too far, not too close. We wandered down Highway 1 toward Big Sur. Magnificent! Once other members of the family found out we were going down the coast, they all glommed on. If they stayed home they would be put to work. We had to take two SUVs!!! So caravan style, we drove down the highway. As we looked out over the ocean, we could see the fog about a mile off ... read more

After 4 days in San Diego we decided to head north rather than straight to Las Vegas. We had got lucky and got a booking at Yosemite National Park in 7 days time (normally you need to book 6 months in advance). So we headed north via our friends in San Clemente where our green cards, social security numbers and other mail had been sent. It turned out our green cards had arrived but the social security numbers (which we need to work and get cell phones) hadn't arrived. We headed further north and the traffic was awful! A 2 hour drive to L.A. stretched to 6, and we still had another 3 to get to our campsite for the night. Finally we arrived in Carpinteria, a small town on the beach about 2 hours north ... read more

Monasteries - New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur Stopped for a night at the New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur, one of the most dramatic of the 250 monasteries we visited for our book "Sanctuaries: A Guide to Lodgings in Monasteries, Abbeys and Retreats of the U.S." We were met with this new sign, which set the tone for our stay ... everyone moves slowly and with deliberation in this clifftop monastery, perhaps in awe of what they see. Hello All, We had a wonderfully relaxing day at Esalen Institute in the middle of our packing craziness. We have had the good fortune of visiting Esalen Institute on several occasions as guests of friends who work there. If you do not know about Esalen Institute check it out here: Esalen Institute The highlight at Esalen is the hot springs located in a beautiful bath house perched on a cliff in scenic Big Sur. We had a soak in the tubs followed by a fantastic lunch of salad, onion fritata, sweet potato and a divine lemonade made with lemons and rose geranium. After lunch Abby took a nap and I took a pair of scissors to 8 years worth of t-shirts. That is right I have taken all my old t-shirts and cut them intosquares so ... read more
