I started from San Francisco before 8am on a drive on Route 1 also known as Pacific Coastal Highway or PCH. I was doing this trip towards the end of Sept and was not expecting to see the infamous coastal fog that shrouds San Francisco bay area for most of the summer. It was bright and 85 degrees for the two days I was in San Francisco. 30 min into the drive and I began seeing the ocean to my right. However I also started seeing a envelop of fog rolling into the bay area from the ocean. And soon everything was covered in fog. So the drive all the way to San Luis Obispo was foggy. Sometimes the sun would come out but only for a short while. I did the 17 miles scenic drive ... read more

We decided to move on further down the coast today to cover some of the 300+ miles to LA. We said goodbye to the smelly room and headed off down Hwy 1 through the stretch of coastline known as Big Sur. It's a breathtaking coastline, the scenery is amazing. We saw vultures, elephant seals, and a whale far out at sea. We drove down to Cambria, a small town about 240 miles north of LA and booked into a cute motel, the Sea Otter Inn, along Moonstone Beach Drive; it's right overlooking the sea, and no dodgy carpet smell! After checking in, we had a walk over to the main street of Cambria and had a burger in the Main Street Grill. Steve's got a thing for root beer at the moment. We're heading on down ... read more

I have been driving to Big Sur along Highway 1 for 4 times during my stay in California for 18 months. It is one of my favorite places on the earth. It is the No. 1 of top 10 romantic places by gayot.com. “Big Sur” means “big mouth” in Spanish. It is not a spot in the map; instead, it is a coastline on Highway 1. The scenic charm can be extended from between Santa Cruz to San Simon. From Carmel to Lucia alone, touring Big Sur on Highway 1 is one of the most captivating drive anywhere. The inland strip along Highway 1 provides access to state parks, redwoods, coastal streams and Los Padres National Forest. My last visit was in mid spring 2006,We set out from Mountain View in south bay (where Google is ... read more

Its been quite a while since I last sat in front of a computer to update this travel blog. We've spent a lot of time in state parks with no internet access etc but now we're down the coast and I've found one and half an hour to start catching up. Jim & Laura's was great. really good to see them and their girls. When i last wrote we'd been down the river on a raft. Well after that we did a bit of wine tasting in Washington state, Susan did some outlet shopping, we did a bit of touristy stuff including the Discover centre which traces the jouner that Lewis & Clark took getting across to the wild west, and generally enjoyed ourselves there catching up. To add validity to Mitchell's claims about the ... read more

APRIL 29, 2007 My intention for the Big Sur 21 Miler was to have fun, experience the beauty and majesty of the scenery and nature that this course is famous for. I woke up at the ungodly hour of 3:50AM (anything with a 3 in it is sleepy time in my opinion…). All the race participants - marathoners, 21 mile power walkers, 10 milers alike - prepared to board the bus and take the hour long ride to the start line. The course hugs the California coast with its 2 lane highway introducing us to expansive ocean views, cliffs with neighboring flower fields and fog-filled head winds. The wind did whip and a few fog banks descended but considering that one year it hailed, I found the weather to be quite pleasant. The Big Sur ... read more

Stanford to Redondo BeachLiz Toms Highway 1 is the greatest highway ever, I do believe. It's so scenic. We left Stanford and eventually got onto the Highway and finally got to see the Pacific Ocean. The weather didn't really clear up until we were a ways into the drive, but it wasn't too much of a hinderance when we were able to stop and take pictures (though it was probably a good thing we weren't planning on spending a long time in any one spot, nor actually stopping in Big Sur for that reason). Driving south, we were able to see the Bixby Bridge, some whales (I was so excited to finally spot some and photograph their migration), and a recreation of The Birds when we stopped and decided to feed the seagulls---there were two birds ... read more

In the last few days we have been completely ‘blown away’ by the number of grey whale spouts we have seen as we have been driving south down the pacific coastal road. From Monterey we spent the day stopping and gawking and pointing at the ocean - very exciting and very special. We stopped in Cambria for a night and in Santa Barbara for 2 nights. We had a very posh meal one night (a pound of fillet steak between us) and went out on a whale watching trip to see the grey whales. ... read more

For me there are few feelings in the world that compare to going home, and no better way to arrive than after a perfectly decent road trip. Leaving San Diego, my home for the last six months, on a solo road trip to the beautiful island I call home (located somewhere outside of Seattle) was certainly no exception. Departing San Diego late one Friday afternoon in March I tried to imagine the worst traffic I possibly could... I was almost prepared for the nearly six hours it took to get to, and through, Los Angeles. Undeterred and hoping to make Big Sur by sunup with at least some small amount of sleep under my eyelids I reached a beautifully small Southern Californian beach state park around ten. Tossing and turning (no small feat for a ... read more

I had planned a trip to New York but at the last minute decided to drive down Highway 1’s scenic coast to Santa Barbara. For those of you who don’t know, Highway 1 runs all along the coast of California from San Francisco to San Diego along some of the most beautiful coastline in California, through Carmel Valley and Big Sur. Day 1 My first day was quite eventful. It reaffirmed my faith in my karma :) I left in the afternoon and drove along for a few hours stopping periodically along the way to take pictures. It truly is a spectacular drive. I really don’t like to drive so I wasn’t very excited to be making the 7-hour journey by myself, but as soon as I saw the sweeping ocean views, my spirit lifted. I ... read more
