Today we left behind the big city traffic of Bakersfield and headed toward the central California coast. It was a pretty ride. The highway passed rolling golden hills dotted with dark green California oak trees. Here and there black cattle were scattered like pencil points on the hillsides. We had traveled through the orchards and fields of Bakersfield and now we were in cattle ranch and vineyard country: the San Joaquin valley. The road through the valley to the central coast was curvy and had steep grades. Our first stop on the coast was Morro Rock, a huge volcanic (what else) remnant in Morro Bay. Unfortunately the rock was fogged in and we saw only the lower third of the 581 ft high landmark. We continued to travel north on Route 1. It’s a beautiful ride ... read more

Big Sur is a very famous tourist destination along the Pacific Coastal Highway-1. Big Sur generally refers to the region surrounding the town of Big Sur. It’s boundaries are not very-well defined; however, in general it is considered to be the area between the Carmel River and San Simeon town along the pacific coast. Big Sur is world famous its resorts and state parks along the coastline. This beautiful drive on the PCH-1 provides number of stunning vistas. We reached San Simeon on Friday night and spent a night there. Our lodge - San Simeon Lodge was located just across the ocean. We got a beautiful view from the parking lot of the lodge. Hearst Castle Next morning, we had a breakfast and left for the very famous Hearst Castle. I knew beforehand that this is ... read more

Thursday 24th April - My final day in New Zealand; I got picked up by a shuttle from the Jailhouse hostel in the morning and went off to Christchurch Airport. I was due to fly Christchurch to Auckland and then Auckland to San Francisco. I spent ages in a queue with some fineky, elderly, english gentlemen trying to book my luggage through to the international connections desk so that when I arrived at Auckland the big rucksack would automatically get packed on the flight for San Francisco. Finally checked in the luggage with about 15 minutes to spare until Air New Zealand boarding commenced. I sat next to a nice elderly Kiwi couple (the wife was originally from Manchester and moved there in the 60s) who made sure we didn't dehydrate too much throughout the flight. ... read more

Having spent a delightful time on California's Central Coast, it was now time to ride the epic Pacific Coast Highway northward. Considered by many to be the finest drive drive in America, we experienced a portion of the PCH last summer on the family vacation road trip (that blog can be found at: http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/Arnim-Hucks-Roadshow/). Much of the time while piloting Lurch, our Aerostar van up the PCH I had to tell myself to not imagine riding that marvelous road on my bike. This was my chance to finally ride it. The first half of this two day jaunt held the prize of picking up my replacement brake lever in Corte Madera, just north of San Francisco. On a whim I called a childhood friend who I knew lived somewhere in that area, and was surprised and ... read more

Wow, we have just arrived in a small town called Cambria which is just South of the Big Sur region. We have just driven down possibly the nicest ocean road in the world with views of the Pacific ocean to die for. We spent the night at riverside inn lodge which is surrounded by mountains and trees. It has been absolutely ammmmmazing. And the only thing that has made the experience even better is the car we hired from San Fran was upgraded to a convertible for the same price as a basic! We couldn't stop smiling! You could probably drive this road in about 3hrs if you tried but it must have taken us about 7hrs in total brecause you can't avoid pulling over every ten minutes as the views just keep getting better and ... read more

Part 1 We left Santa Barbara in glowing sunshine and headed up the dramatic Highway 1; Gladys our sat nav took us on an alternative route via highway 154 and through Los Padres National Park, very dramatic and breathtaking views. We took numerous blurred photos and images to try and capture the beauty but I guess you just had to be there. The Big Sur is equally stunning with mountains ascending to our right and sheer ocean drops to our left; amazing. Arrived at Lucia Lodges c 3.30 in the pouring rain. The accommodation consists of 9 cabins built in the 1930s on the sea rock face 400ft above and overlooking the ocean. I’m sure the view will be spectacular if their wasn’t so much damn rain and mist, maybe tomorrow. We’re the only residents here ... read more
