Marble Canyon, so named of its colorful rocks and cliff walls is just below Glen Canyon Dam and extends from this area of the Colorado River to the confluence with the Little Colorado River. Along with Lees Ferry, Marble Canyon marks the beginning of the Grand Canyon at its most western point. The cool waters of the Colorado River offer a stunning contrast to the ancient rock walls that rise to form the majestic Marble Canyon, a prelude to what will give way to the Grand Canyon downstream. A veritable southwestern paradise, Marble Canyon is a sightseer's delight. Located just beyond Lee's Ferry along the river, Marble Canyon is a beautifuls gateway to the one of my most favorite places on earth The ruins along the roadside into Marble Canyon Take your camera or you will ... read more

On 09/28 we arrived in Monument Valley. After lunch, we returned to find a group of French tourists looking at our coaches. They asked a lot of questions, but were pretty nice about it. We also spoke with a couple from Germany who have a 26-year old German RV with 180,000 miles on it. They shipped the RV by boat to Halifax, Nova Scotia and drove all across Canada into the Yukon and down to the US and will end up in Tampa, where they’ll store their rig and fly back to Germany. We’ve met so many people who are RVing! Chris drove us into the park in his 4-wheel drive truck. It was a dirt road with lots of bumps, and I felt like I was in a truck commercial. Again, we marveled at the ... read more

After camping for two days near Grand Canyon’s North Rim, we headed northeast toward Lake Powell, which straddles Arizona and Utah. We stopped to view the Navajo Bridge which crosses Marble Canyon. The bridge was originally built in the early 1900s and is now for pedestrians only (too narrow for today’s traffic). During construction, workmen dangled from ropes to prepare the canyon walls. Because there was no other way across the Colorado River canyons, they had to drive a 700-mile round trip through Needles, CA to get supplies and equipment to the other side. The current bridge is next to the old one and they were designed to look alike. Arriving at Page, AZ, we headed for the Glen Canyon Dam. This was built in the 1950’s to store water from the upriver states for distribution ... read more

Wow...September 24th was a doozy of a day. We visited the Phoenix Zoo and wanted to get an early start because the temperatures were supposed to top 100 degrees. Well, the weather forecast was right....it was over 100 degrees with a bright, hot unrelenting sun today. Absolutely NO breeze whatsoever. We arrived at the zoo shortly after it opened at 9:00am and it was already in the high 80's low 90's. The zoo was nice....there is an open African Savannah where giraffes, oxen, ostriches, etc roamed around together. The zoo has nice, wide paths and they allow people to bring their bikes. So, families were riding together all over the zoo. Kim and I wandered around the zoo, snapping pictures and just thoroughly enjoying the day. After adding to our now bright pink, red sunburns.....we decided to ... read more

On September 23rd Kim and I took a nice side trip to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. There are wonderful exhibits explaining the plants, animals and geology of Arizona and the Sonora Desert. The museum is located in the mountains on the west side of Tucson. We drove through Saguaro National Park on the way....what breathtaking scenery. The back roads were very challenging to drive....curvy, swervy, and narrow. And did I mention NO guard rails? YIKES! Even though this is called a Museum....that's a little misleading. It's an outside 'living' museum with live animal exhibits in their natural habitat, hiking trails with cactus gardens....not very much of it is inside. We saw everything from hummingbirds to big horn sheep. We hiked around about 80% of the entire park which is pretty impressive in 100 degree heat ... read more

Tucson/Tombstone Kim and I drove from Roswell, NM to Tucson, AZ in about 8 hours. We left at 3:00am so we could beat the heat and majority of the traffic. It was eerily quiet driving through the mountains outside of Roswell in a town named Ruidoso Downs. We were the only car on the road for miles and miles. We were lucky enough to see the sunrise over the mountains and enjoyed every minute of it. What a sight! We arrived in Tucson around 11:00am and were able to check in to our hotel early. It’s a good thing because we were pretty tired. My Aunt Helen and Uncle Mike live in Tucson so they picked us up for dinner. They chose a wonderful Mexican restaurant named La Fuente….the atmosphere was awesome. Mariachi band, hanging plants, ... read more

Echt moederziel ... read more

I couldn't head back to Los Angeles without visiting the Grand Canyon. It was a horrible drive from Las Vegas, but the view made up for that. I was going to stop at Hoover Dam along the way, but it was completely crowded with tourists and there were no parking spaces left anyway. Besides that, the heat was eating me alive. Other than that there are literally no other places to stop at along the way. There were plenty of tourists at the Grand Canyon, but amazingly not as many as there were at the dam. I wasn't expecting the Canyon to be so rich in colours. The rock layers each showed a variety of colours, and seeing a Canyon so huge like this is definitely something to "Ooooh" and "Ahhh" over. Morgen richting Kayenta ofzo, waar we 's middags Monument Valley gaan bezoeken!
