My mom, Ginny is holding her own as of this morning. Her blood pressure has increased and has stabilized at about 100 over 50. This is possible only with a lot of medication. The immediate concern is to get her blood pressure to stabilize without the medication. At the same time they are attacking the pneumonia and Sepsis with a lot of antibiotics. She has been awake and responsive to us, answering by shaking or nodding her head. At issue is also her kidney function. Still unknown is the source of her adnominal pain that started this whole thing off. It appears that it could take a few days to know if she is out of the clear. All three of her kids are here now along with Wendy, Doug's Daughter. Doug is spending most of ... read more

On the way from Canada to Chile I stopped in Santa Fe for a workshop and since it’s only about 700 kms away from the Grand Canyon and other interesting parks, I decided to pay it a visit, even though it was the middle of winter. But hey, that’s a good chance to test all my new gear. It was going to be essential in freezing Patagonia… So I managed to get hold of a huge Dodge (I booked the cheapest car I could find but luckily that car never turned up and the rental car guys didn’t have another car available and thus not choice but give me the biggest car they had! Lucky me!!) and off I drove to that spectacular piece of earth (must be one of the most outstanding landscapes in the ... read more

In December my mother was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. After a bought with debilitating stomach cramps, and a serious of test it was discovered that cancer lesions where present on her liver. Last week she was administered her second dose of Chemotherapy. On Sunday we took her into the ER because of stomach Cramps. This morning her heart rate dropped, necessitating a very scary morning involving code red. My wonderful mom is suffering from massive pneumonia. She is in the intensive care unit on at the here in Prescott, AZ. We have a very difficult battle to fight. She is currently on life support and receiving large doses of anti-biotic. Ginny is a strong fighter and we are doing everything in our power. I am taking break from the Hospital and when I left she was ... read more

We have new belts. It ended up costing less than we had expected ($228)...so thats good, right? Of course it is. I'm just happy we dicovered it when we did. That whole day was interesting. First, the belts. That took us till 3pm. When we left, we drove about 20 miles when Adam noticed that we were running a little hotter than we were before. Awesome. Adam calls Doug down at Premier Auto Care in Pell City. He suggest that we return to the shop. So we head 20 mins back to Pell City. I really can't say that Pell City was a place on my list of places I'd like to spend a lot of time, but we did anyway. We returned to Pell City at 4pm. Adam started talking shop (again) with the guys ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 1 Arizona - The Grand Canyon State 10th - 24th January 2006 Planning and preparation for this trip had taken weeks of research, through the internet, many books and countless brochures. Then came the frustration of settling domestic bills, selling Smiley (our beloved UK Autotrail motorhome) and our remaining car. Letting our little house and moving furniture into store left us weary on the day of departure. And then, the sad good-byes to family and friends. Our 747 finally left the Heathrow runway some 30minutes late, heading for Phoenix Arizona and with a smile and a high five the reality of our next adventure began. We were on our way at last, expecting to be away from home for a year or more, travelling some 40,000 miles clockwise right around the ... read more

At seven a.m. on Monday morning I loaded myself, my camera gear, two days of food, and my bike in my mom’s car and took off to put my photographic interpretation on the red towering rocks of North Central Arizona. First stop: the rising sun over the historic mining town of Jerome, and then onto Sedona. The best time to photograph is early in the morning or late in the day when the sun is low and the light is warm and constantly changing. To have a chance of capturing a zinger of a nature photograph you have to get your ass out of bed much earlier then you would like, position yourself in a spot you think has potential and hope for the best. Dressed in layers I headed into a desert gully in the ... read more

This is it! Short entry to update everyone we haven't spoken to this week. Bill's dropping off the cable boxes and expecting me to have the computer packed when he gets home. AHHHhhhhhh, gotta hurry! We're headed to Los Angeles tonight as soon as we finish cleaning the house. The truck is just about packed. We'll ship our belongings tomorrow, at LAX then drive down to San Diego for a little R&R with Scott & Kelly (Bill's son & his other half) before flying out on Monday night. Wish us luck! The next blog will be from Costa Rica. PURA VIDA! The Sheridan's Jennifer, Bill, Callista & Bear... read more

Sitting in the Salem train station I was a little apprehensive about the idea of spending all night on the train. Will I get any sleep? My fond memories of train travel included a sleeper car. In those memories I was the cute little white kid entertained by the colored sleeping car porter who turned our room into an amusement park with seats that fold into beds. But now on my own nickel I was going coach. I know the seats are more comfortable then a bus, but how comfortable I try to recall? The joy of riding the rails became immediately evident as soon as the train began to move. The slow roll and pitch of the car; the sway back and forth; The muffled sounds inside the carpeted chamber; The constant flow of air ... read more
