After a virtually sleepless night for all (who puts safety lights shining directly into motel rooms???) most of the group got up and in the car at 5am to see the sunrise. God bless Bob, the only guy to join the group (he was up anyway according to him), who drove us over to the Yavapi outlook. We began our 1 mile journey and found our own spot where we didn't have to share it with anyone. Needless to say the view and the sunrise were amazing. We sat "perched" out on a rock. Bobby had the quote of the day..."Mom , I think you may be more nervous than Aunt Nancy!" Julie sat a few feet back from the crowd so she would enjoy the view and not have a anxiety attack! After breakfast we ... read more

We were smart enough to NOT eat breakfast at the Hualapai and hit the road early for the Grand Canyon. We stayed at the Maswik Lodge with no air conditioning, which is as much "roughing it" as any of us were willing to endure. We hiked along the rim for about 2 miles. Nancy and Julie are not enjoying the lack of fences along the rim. We had dinner at El Tovar which was fabulous and enjoyed the sunset. We got a glimpse of more stars than we've ever seen before on the walk back to the lodge.... read more

First and most important, Nancy is still alive and did NOT fall out of the boat!!!!! Okay, now for the day. It is becoming an Griswold family adventure as we stayed in the Hualapai Lodge (prononced Wall-a-pie but Julie couldn't get it so she just called it the Oompah Loompah Lodge - no disrespect to our Native American friends intended of course!) If you plan to visit next summer call your breakfast order in today and it might be ready, maybe... The restaurant is simply the worst we've experienced but we are truly in the middle of NOWHERE and they are the only game in town (Literally!). We took a school bus on a bumpy 45 minute ride to the bottom of the canyon where we saw wild burros (and, no, we were not just looking ... read more

Is It Hot, Or Is It Just The Peyote? Previously, on the O.C.....errr, blog: - 4 desperadoes take Los Angeles hostage for cheap coronas. - Johnny Depp quits the acting business to focus on the management of his club after an anonymous blogster raises hell. - Collingwood lose....again. - Running out of gas in Nowhere, California nearly nixes the whole trip, but our plucky favourites pull through. In tonight's episode: - Some dodgy mexican floors our hero, only to have him return to top form for Sin City. - Rogue spaniard Carlos Sanchez departs for Oz. - Record heat in Las Vegas troubles the steed, but her noble spirit ensures safe passage. Right, enough bullshit. Last time i wrote we were on our way to Ventura/Santa Monica Beach, so let me take it from there. Taking ... read more

We saw part of the painted desert on the way and it was gorgeous, however the road was closed to most of it so we only got a glimpse. The petrified forest is technically in the painted desert but it was less "painted" than the rest. It was interesting to see as a phenomenon, but nothing like the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone. Apparently the wood, which are really trees turned into rocks that were under layers of lava and other things, are 250 million years old. The age of the earth is really puzzling to me, since human's or at least homosapiens have only been around 6000 years.... read more

Big difference between here and Las Vegas. Mankind couldn't begin to create something this beautiful. So many things I have seen just in nature tell the story of the character of the creator, and this is one of the most beautiful. I could have sat and looked at it all day. Definately a place I want to go back to. I can't even describe how pretty it was. It was great to have someone with me for the rest of the trip at this point to share the experience and adventure with. Still having trouble loading pictures, will try again later.... read more

After Las Vegas I headed on east and caught a bus to Phoenix, Arizona. It was a long a difficult trip overnight, for some reason they really like to make the greyhound bus seats extremely uncomfortable but after a restless night I was immediatly in awe of the landscapes surrounding this area and the dry heat was very appealing. The city itself is very big and it really didnt have that much character apart from an exellent art gallery and few art shops. I decided to head further south and ended up in a town called Tucson, again the bus trip was a nightmare even though it was the trip was only 1 hour the bus was delayed for 2. I dont normally complain about bus trips having been on alot of nightmare style trips ... read more

Road Trip!! Okay, so I rented my first car in a foreign country. Rentals driving to Sun Peaks don't count because I've driven the Coquihalla countless times in Casper and then Oz. They gave me a staff discount at the rental place because I work for the hotel but being the big chicken I am, I bought insurance which doubled the cost anyways. I was a little bit nervous because a) I didn't know the road and b) I'd been watching the news about some major wildfires in the area. Once I got on the highway, it was all good. I made a mental note of a couple of areas that I wanted to stop at on the way back (Outlet shopping!). My first stop was at "Montezuma's Castle". It's not really a castle but a ... read more

So after a sad good bye to Brian in the Venice Beach carpark, Carin and I joined Liv Marie, Tall Martin and Mike for our trip out west, first stop Las Vegas. Las Vegas.... what can I say? after driving through the desert for hours, Vegas appeared over the horizon, a glowing mecca, its bright lights guiding us back to civilisation (or a very colourful form of it). Vegas is like Disneyland for adults. It has all the bright lights and glamorous facades that one sees in Disneyland, and like Disneyland when you look behind the curtain you realise the whole place is a facade - it has no soul. But, dang, it´s fun! We danced all night, mostly at Studio 54, and then ended up at the Bulargio to watch the sunrise over the artificial ... read more

When our memories outweigh our dreams, we have grown old. --William J. Clinton - Bill Clinton LINKS None TRAVEL TIPS This is an early get up and we are preparing for the end of our trip. We packed up, had a light breakfast and headed down the river. There were no rapids; it was pretty calm the whole way down. The raft float was at least four hours, before the jet-boat picked us up and brought us to Lake Mead. As we traveled out of “The Canyon”, things just disappear. No more fascinating geology, no more canyons to hike, no more waterfalls, it was a bit sad. Well our bus met us and off we went through the security of Hoover DAM We are back to civilization (?), Las Vegas (?) from the sublime to ... read more
