Late start today as Kerry had to get his spare tire for the trailer replaced. He had to go to every tire place and gas station in town to find someone who could sell him the right tire. While Kerry searched for a new tire, Gena went into a small gift shop with a sod covered roof. The clerk told her that they had to mow it twice each week. Since we got a late start, we decided to drive to Glennallen and get a camp site for two nights. We went down to Wrangell/St Elias National Park Visitors Center in Copper Center. Really nice center! Great displays and exhibits. Gena & I watched the 22 min video on the park. It is a spectacular video with great sound - - very well done! We got ... read more

4 June 2010 Haines Junction, YT to Tok, AK Got off by 8:30 AK time (we didn’t bother to reset our watches when we came up from Haines, AK). Gena stopped at the post office in Haines Junction to get a special Haines Junction Post mark. Gena & Charlie each bought a couple patches. The Alaska Hwy was pretty good road until we got to Burwash Landing the itn went to h--- in a hand basket !! There were lots of frost heaves (actually frost heave after effects), pot holes, gravel sections, construction delays, etc. Kerry had one flat on his trailer today - - that makes three on this trip. Got a really good view of a grizzly bear by the side of the road. It was just past a Hamburger stand out in the ... read more

Not far out of Haines Junction on the Alaska Highway, an immature bald eagle swooped across the road in front of our car, grabbed something out of the weeds on the side of the road, and flew off. I knew right then this was going to be a day for spotting wildlife. Around Kluane Lake, a beautiful lake that goes on for miles, Gena spotted a bear. It was a grizzly just strolling down the path. It came up the side road, crossed in front of our car (which was stopped off the side of the road,) then turned down the highway and ambled past us. It stopped next to us, stood up on its hind legs, looked around, then went on down the road. What a thrill! A short while later, Bob spotted a coyote ... read more

Yesterday I went from Alaska to Canada (Yukon Territory); today I went from Canada back to Alaska. My 24 hours in Yukon Territory was marked by an almost constant drizzle; not enough to hinder views very much, but just wet enough that I had to keep the top up on the Miata. This morning started out dry, BUT I had to revise my goal of leaving the Miata top down at all times unless it was raining. Even though it was not raining when I started out this morning, it was 37 degrees and cloudy; a bit too numbing for me so early in the morning, so I left the top up and turned on the heater. After about an hour on the road and a stop for breakfast, it had “warmed” up to about 43 ... read more

Deadhorse is basically a giant oil terminal. Lots of portacabin buildings, a range of enormous trucks, diggers etc, pipelines everywhere and men in rigger boots and hard hats. As Edwin said it was just like being back at Port Clarence. However, being as far north as you can get by road this was the true starting point of the journey, from here its 20,000 miles south. To celebrate the start of the journey we went for a skinny dip in the Arctic Ocean at Prudhoe Bay. There isn't really much else to do in Deadhorse the only 'attractions' are the hardware store and the post office. There isn't even a bar as its a dry town - although we might have snuck in a beer to toast the start of the journey. The only way out ... read more

Happy Days are here again - The skies above are clear again. What a great and glorious day. The sun is shining, it’s in the 70’s and we have no place to go and nothing to do. Woo-Hoo! We slept-in, did laundry, walked the bike trail for a couple of miles, Dave started reading a book and I caught up on emails and blogs. In the afternoon, we visited the visitor’s center and some shops and then we went to Fast Eddy’s and had coffee and dessert. Dave had the great Forest Pie with berries, apple and rhubarb with vanilla ice cream on top and I had the Chocolate Rockslide, a brownie with the ice cream and chocolate syrup all over it. Boy were we bad and boy was it good! Stopping at the local NAPA ... read more

Feels like summer, as we woke up to blue skies and the sun shining brightly. I was really daring and decided to wear Capri pants today for the second time in a month. Dave actually took off his flannel shirt. We must be Alaskasized because we were really warm with the temperature at 50 degrees as we started our morning. Good-bye Glennallen. Traveling out on the Tok-cutoff, we had excellent views of the Wrangell Mountains to our south in the morning and then the Mentasta Mountains to our south in the afternoon and the Alaska Range to our north. Half way to Tok, we stopped at Midway Service, where Dave went in for a coffee to go and I tried getting online for their free wi-fi. After 30 minutes and not being able to get online, ... read more

The railroad was built in the early 1900s to service the copper mines and then it shut down right before WWII and then in the 1950s they pulled up the rails and made it into a one lane road that is still known as one of the worst roads in Alaska. The idea that it is the worst road is actually the fun part. The location my dad homesteaded in 1964 had been a sawmill that cut lumber for the mines and the town of McCarthy. The place had burnt down at least twice but there is not much history on the place. The homestead is about 18 miles from the town of McCarthy which is at the end of the road. You can see an awesome glacier from the parking lot at that end,but ... read more
