The trip to Haines Junction was just another one of those daylong drives sitting next to your best friend while following a ribbon of curvy asphalt through beautiful wilderness surrounded by stunning views of snowcapped mountains punctuated by cobalt blue lakes and pristine rivers flowing through rocky canyons under clear skies that allow you to see for hundreds of miles seemingly on the road by yourself. This drive terminates in a park where you look out your RV window at 6,000 ft. peaks in every direction and you don’t really care that there is no water because the underground pipes are still locked in the permafrost. Just another day in the Yukon. The next morning when you roll out early in a constant drizzle with all the mountains cover in clouds you realize just how lucky ... read more

We did a little back tracking this week. On Saturday we traveled back to Tok. It had been our first stop in Alaska back in July. This was a 208 mile drive and a one night stay. The trip to Destruction Bay certainly exceeded our expectations. We had driven that stretch of road in July, and considered it most likely the worse road we had been on. If you remember my post from July 24th, you will remember the mud-coated car and motorhome. This drive was dry, so there was plenty of dust. It was, however, in worse condition ... it took us over 1 1/2 hours to drive 30 miles on one long stretch of constant bumps. It is a wonder we got through this without falling apart! No way do we ever want to ... read more

We had our longest ride yet yesterday, 622 ks which honestly just flew by. It felt really comfortable and we rolled into Tok about 3pm (we hadn't adjusted our watches so think it was probably 2pm). LOTS of trees and mountains coming up into US, very vast and beautiful. Loads of roadworks but we jumped off our bike and had a chat with people to kill time. The US border crossing was no problem at all and Trev and I, along with String, sailed through with no problems (possibly due to the fact we had already been in LA as we came up). Some of the others had to complete paperwork and pay $6USD. We had a good walk around and settled in with a few drinks before we headed to a great Mexican restaurant. It's ... read more

After a great nights sleep at Kathleen Lake, we headed back up the Haines Highway to Haines Junction. We spotted the RV park that we had originally planned to stop at, and were happy with the decision we had made to stop at Kathleen Lake. The RV park, Fast Gas RV park, was located at a gas station with not one tree to be seen. The drive north brought us by Kluane Lake, the largest lake in the Yukon territory. It is approx. 154 sq miles. Seemed as though the lake went on forever, and made our large lakes back home seem like small ponds. Then came the ice-field ranges of the St. Elias Mountains, that included Canada's highest mountain, Mount Logan at 19,545ft. There are also 6 other peaks over 16,000 ft. Needless to say, ... read more

Driving, driving, driving.... Okay, I admit that I took this trip because there were no internal flights, but boy, did I NOT realize how much driving there was on it. But again, long day, but not a bad day. Left Whitehorse around 8 am for Tok. We went through Tok on our way from Fairbanks to Dawson City, so I wan't expecting much at the end of the day. Our first stop was at a historic wooden bridge that was pretty picturesque, but I didn't try and walk across it. Next we stopped at the Haines Junction Cultural Center, which is the gateway to Kluane National Park and Reserve. It had some very nice First Nation stuff as well as a really cool relief map of Alaska on the floor. We crossed back from Canada to ... read more

Day 35 - Tuesday August 20 Valdez to Tok 258 miles It was still rainy and foggy the day we left Valdez and headed to Tok. We had been to the same RV park when we had the group RV wash. After a long drive we had dinner and an ice-cream social with the log briefing and off to bed. Day 36 - Wednesday August 21 Tok to Kluane (Clu on ee) Lake/Destruction Bay 227 Miles Rain had previously washed out all the summer road work that had been done on this portion of the Alaskan Hwy and we were back to horrendous frost heaves and wash board roads. Our wagon master named it Bottom of the World Highway because it was just as bad as the Top of the World Highway. Just after the border ... read more

Before I tell you about the trip to Tok (pronounced Toke like poke) I want to tell you a few things about Chicken, AK. We stayed at the Chicken Gold Camp RV Park. Chicken was named when the early miners wanted to name their camp Ptarmigan, after the state bird, but couldn't spell it. The population is 37. Now think about it, we have 23 coaches with two occupants, that just more than doubled the population and the campground was completely full. When I mentioned that to the owner he said not only that, but in the winter there are only 3 people who stay. The post master, her husband, and an old-timer that will probably die there. Now that's what I call chicken, but finally some honesty about the winters. They have to bring in ... read more
