Now we have arrived in Tok, Alaska and it's time to catch up on my blogging. June 15th we spent a rainy night in Grande Prarie and next morning left for Dawson Creek and mile one on the Alaskan Highway. Two nights were spent there with a lot of sightseeing and history especially on the amazing construction of the road by U.S. Army engineers in nine months time. On the 18th we boondocked on a gravelled strip along the roadside, then spent the following two nights at the Three G campground at Fort Nelson with more sightseeing and area history. We left the next morning and just before arriving at Liard River our overnight spot, we came upon a herd of Wood Bison grazing on the grassy areas either side of the road before the start ... read more

Checked on bear. He was complete except final touches and staining. We will pick up tomorrow. Jeff Turney has a load of talent. He had never carved a bear in the position Aleta wanted, but check out the pics - - Awesome!!! Had oil changed, washed motorhome, then waited on Barbara & Jack. Jack grilled salmon, he caught in Valdez; along with sausage, potatoes, and coleslaw.... read more

We have driven extra miles the past two days. Guess we are anxious to get to Alaska as we will arrive a day earlier than planned! Tok, Alaska here we come. The last 128 miles the road from Canada was worst than a road in a third world country. The dips and numerous potholes were unavoidable so we felt as if we were on a roller coaster. Our wildlife sightings for the day were a bald eagle and a mountain lion. We had an uneventful crossing into the United States. Leta was relieved and glad to be back in the states. We checked in at the Sourdough Campground for the next three days. Jack made chili for supper. Our second day we did laundry, worked on the RV, and did some grocery shopping. Jack and ... read more

Today we decided to ride up to Chicken, AK on the way to the Top of the World Highway. Can go no further than Chicken due to a storm washed out the road just past Chicken. Chicken is interesting - population 5 - 6 year round and swells to a whopping 25 - 30 during the summer months. The entire town consists of a General Store, a Bar, and a restuarant, two campgrounds, and a gold dredge of past years. 62 miles from the intersection of the Alaska Highway to Chicken and all along the way are each of those 62 miles and little else. When we got back to the campground, we went over to the pavillion to work on blog, listen to some country, bluegrass, and gospel music. We also tried the pancake toss ... read more

Went to the gift shops and came back to the RV park as I (Shelby T) got a little nauseated. All got better and we had a WONDERFUL steak dinner (cooked on the "Smokey Joe")with salad and baked potato at our motorhome. Dessert was ice cream with OREO cookies. Aleta was taking pictures without a flash at 12:00PM outside the motorhome. Plans are to ride to Chicken, AK tomorrow.... read more

Trip was going fine until we got to Haines Junction then the road turned into the "Road to Hell". Twelve miles per hour was, at times; to fast. Frost heaves - areas where the ground had frozen and thawed causes "whop-de-doo" like road surface. Arrived in Tok, staying at the Sourdough Campground for the next three days until 7/15/2010. Jack and Aleta tried the "pancake" toss to win breakfast, but had to eat the same as Barbara and I as they did not put the pancake in the bucket. :-) For dinner, had Jack's chilli and taco chips at Barbara & Jack's.... read more

Geo: 63.3357, -142.984It was quite a drive through the Yukon into Alaska yesterday! We covered another 500 miles and encountered the roughest stretch of road yet, especially the last 200 miles before the border. There were frost heaves six feet high, invisible potholes that appeared just as you were crashing into them, and whole stretches of road that were missing altogether. We'd speed up and slow down, rise and fall, speed up and slow down, and rise and fall. It was like a free roller coaster that stopped being fun after twenty miles, except for the stunning scenery that somehow made it all worthwhile. Now we understand why they make bumper stickers that boast, "I survived the Al-Can!" (The best part is we get to do this stretch of road a second time when we return ... read more

I've come back into the States for a couple of days. Having driven along the Alaska Highway from Watson Lake up to Beaver Creek, my original plan was to backtrack to Whitehorse and then head north up to Dawson City. But the Alaska Highway is a BAD, BAD road. To be fair, it is built on permafrost, so it's to be expected really, but the road is rough and full of potholes where the ice has melted underneath it and the tarmac has started to sink into the mud that supports it. So my original plan to not drive the rough (but relatively short) road between Tok and Dawson City has been revised (saving around 400 miles of the journey) on the basis that it can't be much worse than driving back down the Alaska Highway. ... read more

Sky was clear when we got up this AM so decided to go back to Fairbanks to try to get some pictures of Denali from the Overlook at the University of Alaska. On the way off the base, we stopped to wait for Charlie and Kerry (who took a wrong turn) to catch up and took some great photos of mountains (Mount Hayes 13000+ Ft) in the Alaska range right from the road on Eielson. Sky was clear when we go there, but there was too much haze to be able to get a Denali Photo - - so it was a bust! Oh, well, we tried. Then headed down the Richardson Highway toward the Alaska Highway (The north end is actually in Delta Junction & NOT in Fairbanks). Saw some pretty awesome mountains in the ... read more

Sunday morning around 3:00 the wind came up strong and woke us. Then the rain started again. We finally managed to get the camper dried and folded up and got on the road by a little after 9. It was cloudy and rainy all day, so no views of Mt. McKinley again. We drove through Fairbanks, stopping at the Walmart there for groceries. We then went to North Pole, AK, where we bought postcards to send to the little folks and some Christmas ornaments. Then on to Eielson AFB where we stayed at their FamCamp and did laundry. Monday morning the skies are clear, so we head back to Fairbanks in hopes of seeing Mt. McKinley from UAF. We got there and could see lots of mountains in the Alaska Range, but McKinley was as elusive ... read more
