Thursday 3.6.2010 day 232 Sun and blue waters We organised our transfers to the next resort today and we looked in to some trips but decided it was better to do then at the next resort so we just hung out at the beach again all day. At night we went for a walk along the beach past some of the other resorts and checked out what they had. The sunset was fantastic and we saw the party boats heading out looking like Spanish galleon all lit up. After that we had a midnight swim in our pool even then it the water was still luke warm just as I like it. ... read more

We got the buss then had to walk about 10 blocks in the heat. Then try and post the letter that need to be weight without understanding Spanish. Eventually we got is sent and had an even longer walk back to the bus. We were encrusted when we got back so just hung out at the hotel. ... read more

So we had our free hotel bfast and had to here a bit of a sepal on how good the hotel is and them wanting us to buy shares in it. We did not wish to buy but they put pressure on for many hours. It was not worth the price of the bfast. ... read more

Sunday 30.5.2010 day 228 Backpacking around the world is a tough job but someone has to do it. We woke up and could see the blue ocean and beach outside our window. F1 was on TV and we saw Mark Webber almost win the race if his team mate had not tyred to run him off the road. Then we decided to have a look around the hotel and check it our. So we went past the travel agent and gift shop had a look at the two restaurants and pool side bar and beach bar had a look at the pool and the birds (in the cage). It took us about 10 minutes to check out the hotel so we went for a walk along the beach and soon got to the deck chairs under ... read more

Saturday 29.5.2010 day 227 Check into the Imperial Fiesta Club at Casa Maya Cancun Today we checked out of our resort in Merida and got a bus to Cancun this was a 4 hour trip and it cost $26 Aus each for a first class buss. We could have got a second class bus for $17 Aus but it would have taken 6 hours and did not take the toll roads. The toll roads are safer. It cost us $4 for the taxi to the buss and $10 for the taxi from the buss to the hotel. When we got to the hotel we where meet by the person looking after us doing the stay and she gave us free cocktails and told us about all the sites and how to get the buss to town ... read more

Lara: The Travel Gods have not been smiling on us recently. After our newly purchased road-trip car was written-off and our Icelandic trip cancelled due to volcanic ash I didn't really have much hope of actually making it to Mexico for a conference. Plus, it was a conference…not half as much fun as I had in Quintana Roo last time around. Two and a half years ago Al and I were backpacking around Central America (see ) spending time in Tulum cenote diving and visiting ruins before heading west to Palenque. I was reluctant to return to a much-loved part of the world for such a brief amount of time and to be staying in Cancun, package holiday heaven (or hell), in an all-inclusive resort, the kind of place I would normally avoid. It was, however, ... read more

Considering I spent the morning running around on a quest for bus tickets and taxis I was glad to have the afternoon lazing on the beach. I walked to the bus station, caught a taxi back and requested him to return which he did, after we'd been left standing on the dusty street with our bags for more than 20 minutes. Arriving at the bus station we filed onto the second class bus, only to find there wasn't a seat free. We eventually found one space and squeezed the two of ourselves and our bags into the space. We arrived in Cancun and found our hostel. In the earliest colonial sources the island of Cancún was originally known to its Maya inhabitants as Nizuc meaning either "promontory" or "point of grass". In the years after the ... read more
