On a plane, 2 hours away from Cancun. Then taking ADO bus to PDC where Staphany is meeting me. Atlanta airport has the worst breakfast, and pretty much food all together :-/ The "body bag" with all my kiting gear was accepted with no questions at 49 pounds... precise packing ;-)... read more

An early start in Franktown this morning... out of bed at 2 15 and on the road to the airport by 2 45, thanks to Jim for the ride. The flight was then delayed for an hour to accomodate the airport in Cancun........ finally arrived in Cancun at 10 after 10 and it took me until after 1 to get to the hotel, not bad all things considered. It appears that I did not have a transfer between the airport and the hotel and the cabs price by what they think you can pay. My ride started at 50 US and ended at 200 pesos, what a run around. Anyhow I am here, the weather is looking great, sun is shining and it is warm outside. I have booked a few trips to see the Mayan ... read more

We decided to leave Isla earlier than anticipated and caught the ferry back with our Swedish friends who had a flight to Cuba. We had been moved to their dorm of 4 the previous night, so we knew they would wake us up when they left. We had booked an amazing deal through our hostel. We had been given the opportunity to reserve a double room in the hotel zone of Cancun for 350 pesos (approximately £17.50) for the night, including breakfast. We jumped at the opportunity as we just wanted the chance to relax, not having to fumble around with lockers and padlocks on bags everytime we wanted to get something out. It is little things like this that you don't really appreciate at home. Also, the hotel had a pool. We caught the ferry ... read more

I'm writing this from my new laptop in a Vancouver Hostel, but more on that in the next edition! Just a little catch up on our last stop in Mexico. We arrived in Cancun to discover it really was different to Playa, just like everyone had told us!! My best analogy is Cancun is like the Gold Coast, and Playa del Carmen is Byron Bay. Checked into a nice hotel downtown, he gave us a better rate because we were there for 5 nights, which was a bonus. We still hadn't escaped the heat and humidity, and because we were staying downtown the concrete and bitumen made it feel even hotter. In Cancun it is a twenty minute bus ride to the beach and 'hotel zone' where all the big resort hotels are on the beach. ... read more

Reflections de Las Ninas Yesterday, my Dad and I went to the beach. I was doing school work and my Dad said, "Are those turtles?" My Dad and I looked over and.......... There were turtles coming out of their nest right in front of our eyes. We ran over and there were baby turtles wandering around the sand trying to figure out where they were. Then someone asked me if I wanted to hold one. I said, "YES!" They put a little turtle right in the palm of my hand. I held it against my chest. It kept on squirming around still trying to figure out where it was. When I set it down I said, "Good luck!" I felt very lucky to hold a baby turtle that was about to have a big and long ... read more

We got the super fast ferry from Isla Mujeres to Puerto Juraz and got a cab directly to Gaby Suites which is in downtown Cancun. Very nice hotel with fantastic modern bathrooms and large LCD tv on the wall…. sweet People had told us how Cancun was very Americanised but as we wandered around the downtown area it wasn’t really like that. The next day we got the free hotel minibus to Isla Cancun, the main hotel zone and found the luxury resorts, modern shopping malls, nightclubs and bars. We spent the day at a beach club (50MXN each includes towel, sunlounge, pool, etc) it was like a night club during the day, extra loud music, people sipping glamorous cocktails and drinking ice cold beers, we felt pressured to join in!! In the evening we checked ... read more

Firstly, I humbly beg your forgiveness for all the American colloquialisms I'm going to use and that I'm finishing up my online travel journal in Mexico over 5 months later. It was a wild trip! ;) I kept a hand written travel journal, so I'm going day by day. I'll start where I left off, but firstly...don't stay at the Hostel Marpez. It's not a hostel it's really a cheap hotel that caters to various degenerates and scammers with 10 pesos left in their pockets. It was just a really depressing place. As a single traveller, I love staying at hostels so I can meet up with people...safety in numbers. There was only one old creepy Canadian guy there and a couple of locals that were glued to the tele watching soccer and drinking beer. When ... read more

Friday 4.6.2010 day 233 I think we had a little too much sun today.... So we got up early today to make the most of our last day at this resort before we move on to a new resort tomorrow. So we found a fantastic spot under one of the little coconut huts and did some sunbaking and some swimming in the clear blue waters. We were out there a little longer than the other days and we got a little red but I tan really well so it should look fantastic tomorrow. Although I am feeling a little bad about the lack of site seeing we have done this week I am not too worried as we have a lot planed for the next few weeks. ... read more
