The bus journey to Palenque went ok. We were a little apprehensive due to all the negative reports we had heard about night buses in Mexico, but it wasn't too bad. At one point we were stopped at a police check point in the dead of night, in the pitch black, in the complete middle of nowhere. A policeman got on the bus and flashed a spotlight over all the passengers. Upon spotting our white faces he came over and demanded 'passport' to each of us. He then inspected both of our passports for a long while before handing them back to us. We next saw him wake up some Asian people behind us to ask for their passports. After rummaging in the overhead compartments the policeman got off the bus and left us to continue ... read more

We slowly descended the mountains into the hot and humid lowlands, our 6 hour bus trip took in some magical scenery before arriving at our destination, the ruins of Palenque. This is one of the grand archaeological sites of Mexico, the ancient Mayan city is set amongst thick forest mountains and the jungle certainly adds to the mysterious feel of the ruins. We based ourselves in the La Canada area, 5 miles from the ruins, at a pretty decent place called Hotel Chablis (550 MXN). The air conditioning was a life saver as the humidity was very draining! We easily flagged down a collectivo (local minibus) going to the ruins (10 pesos each) and spent most of a day exploring the temples, palace and museum. This magnificent city dates back to early 300 BC and much ... read more

We arrived in Palenque delirious from exhaustion. It was our longest bus haul so far and it took much from us; 31 hours of precious time, 300 hard fought Australian dollars and 1 iPod we left on one of the buses. We tried to get the iPod back but the bus company would have none of it, “No habla ingles”, damn. A very frustrating 48 hours. Somehow we found that we were behind the 8 ball a little when it came to time left in Central America, thus the catalyst that brought us to Palenque in such a manner, grumpy, hot, sweaty, smelly, and quite a bit lighter in the wallet. We found our accommodation and decided to take the day off for rest. We actually saw a family of howler monkeys kipped out on the ... read more

We arrived in Palenque yesterday. Coming out of the bus station we were confronted by a large billboard across the road declaring our hostel to be 10 minutes walk this way. Not wanting to drag our bags we hopped in a taxi. We soon found our hostel at the bottom of 'Hostel Street'. Bizarrely here in Palenque none of the hostels are situated in the actual town but in a seperate traveller's world where hostels and their attached cafes and restaurants line a road surrounded by jungle plants and replica stone statues of Mayan gods and monsters to give it that authentic look! We went into the hostel, walking down a corridor rather like a cave, that smelled remarkably like Colchester Zoo to my mind. We were escorted to our room and for once splurging on ... read more

For that trip, one of my goals was to find scorpions or tarantulas and take pictures of them. I can't help it, I love these critters!! I succeeded with the scorpions! I found one in the jungle at night, and the second one, my wife found it in her bed! But for rest of the trip, I can tell that's it's a beautiful and varied region as for the landscapes and nature, culture, food. In Yucatan peninsula, we visited Merida and Campeche cities, Celestun, (biggest concentration of pink flamingos in the world), Calakmul region where you have a cave with hundreds of thousands of bats that go out every night, and pass right by your face, (Cooool!) and also the ancient city of Calakmul deep in the jungle and with myriads of animals to see, and ... read more

Palenque When we felt we had recovered sufficiently, we set off for Palenque, a town within the jungle of Chiapas, that while pretty nondescript as a town, has some pretty amazing sights in its vicinity. We stayed at a place called El Panchan, which is about 4km out of town. It is a slightly chaotic melee of cabins set in reforested jungle (that was farmland not long ago), with a stream winding its way through the site, and a couple of outdoor restaurant/bars. There is also apparently a Mayan steam bath here, but we didn´t go looking for this, or see it. The cabins ranged from four wooden walls and a roof, to fairly nice mini-homes with en-suite bathrooms. Ours was somewhere in the middle. It didn´t have physical windows to block the window shape holes, ... read more

After one night in the Hilton, we were ready to get dirty again, and we hit the highway to a most amazing Mayan ruin in southern Mexico, Palenque. From the advice of other travelers, we knew we wanted to stay in a hippie-run village just outside the ruins called Panachen. This is a small community in the jungle with about 4 different hostel/hotels and a central restaurant/bar that features fire dancers every night! (Well, every night except Tuesday, which is the first night we were there!) The food at the restaurant was reasonable and delicious, and the people we met were fascinating. Our first dinner we ended up at a table next to a group of 15 pilots that were on a 3 week flying tour of Central America! They got together every year and took ... read more

Ok. So to elaborate on the past couple weeks. I left the bakery and lived at casa argentina without obligations for a few days. I filled them by climbing the 3,700 something volcano that lurks over the city. This guy named Lance and I took the last bus to Llona de Pinal, the little pueblo at the base of the cone, just a bombed out looking swatch of cinderblock buildings to be brutally honest, and from there we hiked up to the trail. when we reached the sign for the volcano we hiked off the switchbacks a hundred meters or so and hunkered down by a fallen tree just as the sun fell below the horizon. After a dinner of some tortillas and beans and eggs and cheeze, courtesy of the flores market, we realized that ... read more

we traveled along winding mountain roads by bus to palenque to see the ancient palenque ruins and also the lancandon jungle. it was raining most of the time but i guess that's what happens when you're in the jungle. neither tages nor i had ever been to a jungle before. you could hear howler monkeys in the distance and their defense mechanism sound was that of a tiger so it sounded like there were a bunch of tigers in the jungle. it was an experience never to be forgotten. we didn't stay in palenque long for a few reasons. we were all pretty undecided on where to go next and we needed to purchase bus tix asap before the busses filled up heading to our next destination. we decided this would be our eastern most destination, ... read more

La fila ... read more
