We catch our bus at 8.10 am and snooze for the two hour journey to Vilamosa airport. When we arrive we cannot find our flight on the departure board we que up at a check in desk we hhad our tickets over to the check in attendant who sighs when she sees them. There is a problem. The airline with who we have ticket, one of the three tickets that we have stressed over, missed flights for, argued about, paid one pound a minute to discuss with BA and paid for re-issue only two days before has gone bust. Our flight no longer exists. There are no other flights to Marida that day from Vilamosa. The attendant disappears for about ten minutes and a large que forms behind us. She manages to get us on the ... read more

We fly to Villamosa and take a taxi from the airport to town and then a bus to Palenque which is a little over two hours away it seems further as they put a a musical movie called Hairspray on which is just awful. The hotel at Planeque is made up of individual cabins, leaf roofed with hammocks outside. The bathroom that is around a corner from the bed with no door which helps you get to know the person that you are sharing with a little better than perhaps you need to. We eat in the hotel resturant wherer the bar man introduces me to a Caccaratcha. Caccaratcha is made by warming a glass of Kaluha, ignighting it and pouring it from hight into a glass of tequila. Add some sparkling water, slam the glass so ... read more

Wed 10th Dec '08 We had an early breakfast of gallo pinto (rice & beans) at the hotel at then we packed our stuff. We took a taxi to the ADO bus station & we bought the tickets for our 7 hr trip to Palenque. I found the roads & infrastructure in Mexico to be excellent. We saw a lot of peasant type houses but a lot of well built houses too. Every house seemed to have hamacas, tv & small Virgin Mary shrine lit with Christmas lights or candles. Everyday 5kms or so we saw individual & relay joggers carrying burning torches with support pick up trucks on the roads. It was an impressive demonstration of faith jogging for miles in 28 degree heat. They were running a pilgrimage for the 12th Dec Festival which ... read more

Day 8 Thurs 11th Dec '08 Brad, Brenda, Christina & myself had breakfast & afterwards we took a collectivo to the runas. We hired Francisco & he was an excellent guide, he brought to life the story of Pakal & the Red Queen. This was my favourite Mayan site with the structures set against the jungle & mist rising from the trees. We saw & heard families of Howler monkeys lurking nearby. After 3 hrs Brad & me left & we went further up the road to find a more remote temple near a waterfall in the jungle. We returned to the hotel at about 5.50pm. After dinner that evening we sampled some mescal, tequila, & more of the local beer. There were hundreds of pilgrim joggers circling the main square with pick up trucks & ... read more

Puebla was a fantastic time but it was tme to head to some warmer weather. It took a couple days and a night in an interesting town called Minatitlan, but we made it to spectacular Palenque. This a an ancient Mayan city covering a lot of area. Complete with temples, palaces, ballcourts where the losing team lost a lot more than the game, and breath-taking scenery, we spent the better part of the day here. The temples seemed to rise straight out of the ground with mountains covered in dense jungle as backdrops, amazing. As with every site in Mexico, school children of all ages run rampant through out the entire area. Part of the city goes down into the jungle where you can see all kids of wildlife, including monkeys. Then we decided to do ... read more

Another windy journey to the next town called Palenque. En route we stopped at the Agua Azul falls which were absolutely beautiful. The weather is much nicer here as we're back at sea level so it was a perfect opportunity for a swim which was so nice. We then went to the Misol Ha falls, which unfortunately wasn't safe to swim in. Looked amazing though. It was the falls used in Predator which Arnold Schwarzneger jumps over in the film. We climbed into one of the caves behind the waterfall which was pretty impressive and we also got to see some bats. We went onto Palenque from there. Not much to do here but strolled around the town and went to dinner. The following day we had a nice day of jungle walking and seeing the ... read more

Palenque We caught a bumpy ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carman where Karen went a pretty shade of green, then directly onto a 13hr overnight bus journey, (where Marcel was convinced an old man smelled of wee and kept him awake all night) Karen slept like a baby! We stayed at Edd and Margarita's a hotel in the jungle on the border of the national park and could hardly sleep as the crickets were so loud but so beautoiful and then in the morning we were woken at 5am by what sounded like a dinosaur, as the howler monkeys said good morning with a huge roar that fills the jungle!!! We Went for a walk into the national park and were lucky enough to see a toucan (like the guiness adverts!) apparently really rare,(the ... read more

Today was another long driving day, destination San Cristobal. We were ready for breakfast at around 07:00, but as usual, it took forever for the food to arrive. By this time I’ve decided that Mexicans like their food salty! There was a line of tour buses when we got to the Palenque ruins, apparently because it’s the start of the peak season. Many structures were still not excavated in the ruin complex but what’s different about this ruin is that some of the original artefacts remain in situ, for example, the sarcophagus and the mural in the foliated temple. Salvador was our guide. Again I don’t remember much other than the Mayan calendar. King Pakal lived to 80 years old and died in 683 AD, quite unheard of in those days. I wondered how he got ... read more

Mate-li stesti a neprsi-li nejaky cas pred vasi navstevou La Venty, mate velkou sanci, ze park napodobujici naleziste olmecke kultury nebude zaplaven. Jedine, co drzi mistni oblast pri zivote ... read more

It may occur to our readers that the illustrious duo have been gone for some 8 weeks whereas blog reports to date have us but 8 days into our journey! I can now reveal that this blog is in fact a further three countries behind schedule as I write from Honduras about to embark on a bus journey tomorrow for El Salvador having already graced the lands of Guatamala and Belize. So, with this in mind I shall complete all tales of Mehico here and now with a view to picking up some time and getting our readers a little closer to where we actually are.... So. We last left the pair in San Cristobal. Next stop, the Mayan ruins at Palenque. This was to be our first taste of Mayan ruins and was eagerly anticipated. ... read more
