Palenque, Chiapas, a 15 de octubre del 2009. Saludos otra vez. Omar ... read more

This is my favorite ruins so far. It is in a natural jungle setting and the temperatures were bearable. There were no ropes so you could go inside the pyramids and explore. Also here, are a bunch a waterfalls.... read more

Yesterday we spent the day wandering round the ruins of Palenque. This time we were guideless so it was just the information on the plaques that informed us. It's truly breathtaking there, so I'm just going to let the photos rather than me do most of the talking for this one. Some of the murals were from 600BC and extremely well preserved, it's amazing to think of the difference in artistic and architectural development of the Mayan people when compared to that of the Bronze age Celts who were just producing simple geometric patterns at the same time. Only downside was that it was so hot. The hotel man said it was around 35 degrees and I was totally melting walking up the temples with a bright red beetroot face! Still it was worth it. These ... read more

3rd MAY 2009 - PIG FLU 'RUINS' PLANS, WATERFALL FUN & MOVING ON!!! 7.30am we arrived in Palenque. We had been lax again and not only had we failed to pre-book a hostel but we had failed to even look up the names or directions to any!! Slap on the wrists ladies!! We had a little wander down the street but there wasn’t much occurring so we wandered back to the bus station. The plan was for one of us to watch the bags whilst the other went hostel hunting. Like a cat, we landed on our feet as a couple from the same bus as us told us where they were staying and advised that the place had a dorm room. Sold!! We followed the couple to the hostel. It was not a nice walk ... read more

3/5/09 = An unexpected day in Palenque Arrived in Palenque at 7am with no hostel booked and no knowledge of where any hostels were - hindsight is a great thing! Wondered up a nearby street in search and then had to return to bus station unsuccessful; only option = to wait it out at station until 8/9ish when everything opened. Lucky for us, the French couple who also caught the bus here were still at the station and had a guide book of places to stat…how organised! Ended up following the middle aged couple to a cheap hostel up the road; the 40 something man carrying his big backpack, the 40 something wife wheeling along her suitcase and then me and Debs, like the 2 children trailing at the back - how v.family! Hostel turned out ... read more

Some people classify Mexico as a developing country, while many other people place Mexico in the developed or at least almost developed nation category. Mexico is a huge country with such a variance and a disparity among its people. If you spend time here in Puebla, Cholula, Mexico City, or Oaxaca, even San Cristobal in Chiapas, you will find some money, upscale shopping, modern buildings, and area that could very easily pass for part of the United States, but 4 hours later you could visit a small indigenous village and then you know you are in a different world. For a second you may feel out of place, like in San Juan de Chamula, where you are surrounded by begging Mayan children, women, and men, or you could feel quite comfortable and at home in for ... read more

April 12, Sunday Happy Easter ! We packed up, met for breakfast again, and then said our goodbyes to Rafa, Neder and Carla. They had to hit the tollway to Vera Cruz, about 10 hours and 800+ kilometers of hard riding in front of them. Deb and I had a nice easy days ride to Palanque, only about 210 kilometers away. This time we took it pretty easy, and I was able to see much more of the views than before when I was mainly paying attention to what was coming on the next curve I was carving. Around lunch time I pulled over at what I thought was an overlook, with maybe a little convenience store. Instead it was a great little restaurant, with a world class view overlooking a beautiful valley, and some Mayan ... read more

Sunday, March 8th. We are now in the state of Chiapas at Maya Bell Trailer Park just a couple of kilometers from the Palenque ruins. Because the drive here was about 300 miles, we didn’t have time to post our Chetumal blog before we left Yax Ha. The roads were good except for some sections which were undergoing construction and unlike the rest of our Mexican trip there were few pueblos (villages) and topes. Except for some sugar cane most of the land was used for ranching. We did get an opportunity to photograph some of those Siamese cat and black and white polka dotted sheep I’ve mentioned before. Driving thru one pueblo, we had to wait for a small black pig to cross the road. Sadly, we didn’t get his picture because we thought he ... read more
