The Mayan ruins at Palenque are amazing! The day is hotter than I can even describe, and the humidity makes it hard to breath by 9 in the morning. We learn to walk really slow, stand in shade whenever possible, and sip water constantly. It is hard to imagine how workers were able to constructed these huge buildings in this heat. And this is winter here - the cool season! This place is really interesting though. I would recommend that anyone interested in Mayan history visit here. The decendents of the original Mayans now are the vendors that are as thick as flies through the entire site, but worst in the parking area. We learn lots about their culture from our guide, and their dress and customs. This is how they make their living. They are ... read more

Up again at 5:30 for a day-long drive to Palenque. We stop at Villa Hermosa's La Venta Park, which is where you can see giant Olmec heads carved from stone. The Olmec were the predecessors of the Maya and Aztec. This is the first time that we needed mosquito repellent - but they didnĀ“t warn us before getting off the bus, and once in the park, we couldn't go back to the bus. Many of us got eaten, but no worse than Regina in the summer. There is also a small zoo there. The neatest thing were the Cotimundi that were roaming around free, and came around our tour group. They look like a big cat, but with anteater - type snouts, and made snorting sounds like my dog. Wild spider monkeys in the trees offered ... read more

The ruins at Palenque are one of those big sites that everyone tells you to go see. We took a five-hour cab ride from Xpuijl and arrived at the town of Palenque cramped and sweaty. After our rustic stay in Xpuijl, we opted to stay in a hotel in Palenque, which was actually not much more expensive than the one the night before. Hot showers, clean beds and TV!! What luxury. We watched Ace Ventura; Pet Detective in Spanish, and all fell asleep on the same bed. We took a taxi to the ruins the next day. The site is spectacular, and you can go into some of the ruins, which you couldn't do in Calakmul. In the past, you could go into many more of the buildings, though, but perhaps because of the sheer amount ... read more

Tim Version: * Saw the waterfalls of Misol-Ha, and swam and lay around beautiful Agua Azul. * Visited the incredible ruins of Palenque, loving the jungle setting and angry sounding howler monkeys. The ancient temple filled version: The night bus to Palenque didn't play any movies and didn't let me get any sleep due to a driver with an itchy trigger finger for the bus lights (he would turn on all the lights in the bus so he could read his watch kinda stuff), constant stops, and some like the guy next to me snoring chronically! Palenque is the name of both the town and the ruins, as is often the case. The town Palenque was just waking up when I arrived and I got perfect cheap steaming hot Tomales and Arroz con Leche, such a ... read more

I just paid for 30 minutes IN AN INTERNET CAFE IN PALENQUE CITY, so I am going to write fast. We arrived in Palenque on Friday night and are staying at the El Panchan. We are staying the middle of the jungle in bungalows, near the mayan ruins. There is onE restaurant called Don Muchos with great food. When the ruins were first discovered the archaeologists stayed in the place we are now. The food is incredible, authentic Mexican. I am being forced to learn Mexican in order to communicate the most basic things, like I need a bottle of water. I APOLOGIZE FOR THE CAPITAL LETTERS, MEXICAN KEYBOARDS ARE TRICKY. WE WENT TO THE MAYAN RUINS YESTERDAY AND TODAY, THEY TAKE MY BREATH COMPLETELY AWAY!!!! THESE PEOPLE LIVED IN THESE HUGE TEMPLES AND BURIED THEIR ... read more

Tired? Nar, way past that! We left Mex city in the arvy a little hungover on the first day of the year! A 14 hr overnite bus, with no real sleep then we arrive in P @ 6 in the morn and got a cheap hostel (5 bucks). It would have been sooo nice to sleep but no rest for the wicked! We went to P for the runinas and all the tours went in the morn. We investigated doing a tour but they were all day tours, so being independant travelers we opted to do it on our own. We got a colectivo out to the ruinas, had a look for a while (really cool ruins in the jungle). Then after it was hot as and there are some cool h2o falls in the area. ... read more

By far my favourite of this archaeological Mexican section of the trip. Ancient Palenque is an ancient city set amongst some thick rainforest. The way the massive temples and open spaces appear out of the jungle is pretty amazing, leading to some impressive pictures. Photos don't appear to be uploading at the moment, so check out google, and just photoshop me into the foreground for the time being. Luke and I spent the day following the ways of the ancient people of Palenque, who may or may not have been the ancient proponents of cricket *You'll understand when we get the photos up. Spent the afternoon in a bar awaiting our bus trip to Merida to see Chichen Itza, before hitting the Carribean coast.... read more

The trip begins in two weeks (as long as my passport arrives on time). We will fly from Birmingham to Houston, and then from Houston to Villahermosa Mexico, which is just north of Palenque, in the state of Chiapas Mexico. We will be visiting several Mayan ruins in Mexico and then crossing over into Guatemala to visit two sites there. For the entire trip, we will be in the border regions, between Mexico and Guatemala. This region is popular among the Zapatistas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zapatistas). Dont worry Mom, they dont use their guns anymore, since the Mexico army showed them who is boss. There will be military checkpoints along the way, but all of the travel sites state that it makes the area safer. I am going with Pete Van Zandt, a biology professor at BSC and 11 ... read more

The ruins of Palenque is massive, took us a few hours to see, but I thought the ruins of Chichen Itza was better. Lots of tourists as usual, you can climb a few pyramids. There is also a few waterfalls, not so big though. Went back to town for lunch and ate at this nice restaurant, a bit expensive for me, but for the experience of eating nice once in awhile why not. They serve some tortillas for appetizers with super spicy sauce, my mouth was burning. Dropped off our laundry at the cheapes laundrymat we could find. I got separated from Lars and Helene as i update my blog on the internet, we met up later for dinner then i went back to the hostel while they went for a drink again!! Before that we ... read more
