Weve made it out of Cancun for good this time. Currently it is raining. Like raining raining. Constantly. It started in the night and has been going all day so far thus we have resorted to being stuck indoors. We had plans to go for a horse ride today in the hills but thats been swamped. (Written after the fact: In total it rained for about 18 hours and went into the second night. The temparature dropped immensely taking us from mid 20s down to putting on pants and a jumper) Whilst on Holbox we made a list of all the items Jane needed in order to carry on. On recommendation from the staff at our resort we went back to Cancun on the basis that this would be the best place to obtain these items. ... read more

Sunday 30/09/12 – We woke up really early in preparation for a long day of riding, packed up all our gear and tried to start the bikes. My bike started fine, but Kenz’s just kept clicking at us rather than starting. Unfortunately all the bike shops, mechanics and most other stores are shut on Sundays so we just had to unpack the bike, sit down and work it out for ourselves. The clicking noise was coming from either the starter motor or the relay, meaning the most likely problems were a flat battery, bad wiring/earth/terminals, jammed starter motor or a dodgy starter relay which are a common problem on the KLRs. I have been too unorganised to buy a multimeter so we just had to trial and error until we found a solution. We eventually worked ... read more

A short (ish) story - but not a short blog - on the Kindness of Strangers….part two… Las Guacamayas to Palenque, Mexico $1US = approximately 13 Mexican Pesos The alarm on my watch went off at 6:30 but the rooster outside my open window went off at 3, 4, 5, and 6 o’clock, and who only knows when else. This, of course, made for a fitful night’s sleep. We were waiting at the “bus stand" at the crossroads outside the village of Las Guacamayas, willing to take public transport if something came along, but preferring to hitch a ride with a passing car or truck. It was nearly 8:30 when a truck finally appeared. A people-mover-stand up-in-the-back kind of truck bound for Pico de Oro pulled up and stopped for all three of us ... read more

Our bus ride from San Cristobal to Palenque was again rather adventurous. Apart from the very curvy and bumpy road we got pulled over by the police which delayed our journey by over two hours. We have no idea why we got stopped, probably it was the speeding of our crazy driver :) As a result of that we arrived in Palenque at 1.30am with no place to stay. We decided to take a cab to a close-by hostel, where we got escorted by the drunken bar staff to the sleeping receptionist. We managed to get a room that was in fact a small house made partly out of mosquito nets and palm tree leaves. Situated on the edge of the jungle we were surrounded by voices of the nature, which we were unable to identify. ... read more

Hello all, I'm just writing a small travel blog to keep family and anyone else who may be interested updated on my travels around the world over the next 6 months. I'm afraid the route I'm currently taking through Mexico means that my first few weeks have been fairly preoccupied with ruins, so this may not be the most interesting read, but anyway I shall start at the beginning... After some very quick and efficient flights on Saturday the 3rd of March (excluding some slightly terrifying emergency sirens and an airport lockdown in Detroit) I arrived in Cancun a little bleary eyed about 8 in the evening local time. I shared a cab with a very friendly and forward American lady, who has offered me use of her time share in Cancun whenever I want it ... read more

Once back in Mexico City we got caught up on general housekeeping and prepared for company from Canada. Annette and Lionel arrived at 1 AM on Sunday morning, February 12th with big smiles and a backpack each. A short cab ride to the apartment and lots of visiting took place before we settled for the night. Maurice and I took the couches while our guests took our bedroom. Early next morning we were up and off to church a few blocks away. Even though the service was in Spanish we attempted to follow along and have our Spanish lesson for the day. After a quick change of clothes we all got on the ecobikes and headed for Reforma to ride and see the sights. We made it close to the zocalo, parked the bikes and walked ... read more

It's now coming up to a week since I left England for Mexico it but feels like I've been travelling for months already. The first week has required some adjustment and lot of trial and error but I slowly feel like I'm getting there and have even found myself making some half decent attempts at Spanish. After writing the first blog post on the morning of my flight I left for Heathrow and said goodbye to my family and Cat, who joined me at the airport. I hadn't slept much the night before so crashed out on the plane and then had the pleasure of five hours in Miami (three of which were spent queuing for immigration!). Luckily the person I sat next to on the flight, Natalie from the Shetland islands, also had some time ... read more

Next thing I know it was 7am and I needed a wee. I couldn’t use the toilet, however, because there was a tree in the bathroom. Oh, so that crash at 3am, which we brushed off as the wind, was actually a tree falling through our roof. Everyone does the waterfalls, Misol Ha and Agua Azul, when they come to Palenque. Our advice: only go if you have nothing else to do, if you’ve never seen a decent waterfall, or if you can guarantee the “blue” waters of Agua “Azul” will actually be blue. At this time of year, the occasional thunder storm washes things into the rivers e.g. roads. On the hour and a half journey to the waterfalls, our bus driver had to avoid a few places where the road had been washed away ... read more

Only got a couple of hours sleep last night – my fault, really. I said to Ian, “Do you want me to save you a sleeping pill mate? I’m gonna take as many as I can. I don’t even want to wake up.” Ian, being a pharmacist, gave me two and confiscated the packet. He didn’t get much sleep either so I couldn’t steal them in the night. We stayed in the jungle area slightly outside Palenque, called El Panchan – “a travellers favourite”, which usually means it’s full of people juggling on unicycles, wearing loose fitting cotton slacks and matting their hair some more. With Ian’s hat and my rollies, we’d fit right in. Paid £15 for a hut with a paper roof and it even came with a pet frog in the bathroom. Plan ... read more

Left Merida and arrived at jungle. Checked into a hostel that was made up of a bunch of very simple cabañas, with walls up to the waist then mesh the rest of the way. So i started closing the curtains to get some privacy, so no one could watch me pick my nose or scratch my bottom. Then what did i see sitting there on my curtain.... a big hairy tarantula looking spider. I almost pooped myself. I didnt know what to do.. so i left if for the time being and went on a monkey hunt. Didn't have to look far, as right outside my cabaña in the trees there were heaps of these little howling apes, climbing from tree to tree. That helped me forget about the spider in my room. Anyway.. fear got ... read more
