So we left off in Dangriga. I left Dangriga to check out the other seaside villages down the coast, made my way through Hopkins and to Placencia. There I met a Hunduran named Isaias and he invited me to check out San Juan, a village just across the lagoon, and stay with his family. It may sound really sketchy but as he told me about his experiences travelling I decided that he sincerely wanted to help a brother out. So we took a boat across the lagoon and I spent a few days with him and his family in that middle of nowhere town. It was really an unforgettable three days. We hung out watching movies with the local crew, went to a waterfall (a two hour walk through a Mayan village and then a path ... read more

There is nearly a month of history to relate so I intend to paint with broad brush strokes. We left off in Palenque, Chiapas. I found a trailer park with palapas for sleeping in hammocks and set up there. There were fire ants and they infiltrated my backpack looking for my food, and every time i needed something from my pack my hands got eaten. it was agonizing. The trailer park was very hippy, lots of yoga and a permanent odor of marijuana. The next morning I went to the ruins, just a short walk up the road. At the gate a bunch of kids were hawking jungle tours, explaining the abundance of unexcavated ruins. I declined the tour but made mental notes of the map they were showing me. When I got in I walked ... read more

Ok. So to elaborate on the past couple weeks. I left the bakery and lived at casa argentina without obligations for a few days. I filled them by climbing the 3,700 something volcano that lurks over the city. This guy named Lance and I took the last bus to Llona de Pinal, the little pueblo at the base of the cone, just a bombed out looking swatch of cinderblock buildings to be brutally honest, and from there we hiked up to the trail. when we reached the sign for the volcano we hiked off the switchbacks a hundred meters or so and hunkered down by a fallen tree just as the sun fell below the horizon. After a dinner of some tortillas and beans and eggs and cheeze, courtesy of the flores market, we realized that ... read more

short blog severely limited by cafe time. After climbing volcan santa maria for the sunrise, a sublime and seriously sub zero endeavor that was extremely beautiful, picking up my camera and dropping off some banana bread at my beloved host fam, i left xela in a hurry, litterally running because it was late and i needed a bus. I made it to mazatenango on the twenty third at like 7 pm, and looked frantically for a hotel, finally found one after getting booted from a dumpy motel by a drunk owner. the next day i hopped a direct for tulate, crossed the river and saw the ocean for the first time in my journey throught the isthimus. I was there for christmas and christmas day, splashing in the waves and surviving on peanut butter and banana ... read more

I´ve been in Xela for almost three weeks now. They have gone by like a blustery september breeze, maybe more like a mountain wind. Spanish school was on the whole a good experience, and i´m very glad i did it. It was by no means easy, and I have to say that i have never felt more physically and spiritually drained after an intellectual activity. Countless times I got back to my house and ate lunch and just lay down on the bed and zoned out, no clue what to do with my afternoon and no motivation to do anything really. It usually lasted about ten minutes, a semiconscious meditation on nothing. I always found something to do, though, which was fortunate. The first week i spent exploring the city thoroughly, for the most part Zona ... read more

Well, the adventure on Pacaya was more or less successful. I didn't make it to the summitt or see the lava, which was a bummer, and I lost my camera, yes, its horribly true but I think its sitting on the volcano or it was robbed the next day. However, I was able to hitch a ride back to antigua, where all my things were sitting in the hostel where I was living, witth a group from a travel agency that we caught walking down. I left antigua on a chicken bus headed for los encuentros and from there to Tecpan. I decided to take the northern route to lake atitlan and stop by Iximche rather than going south to the coast. After a rather smooth two bus trip I found myself walking up a narrow ... read more

Ok so we left off when I was leaving La Capital, as they call it. I left thinking I was going to stay in Amatitlan for a night and then go who knows where. I got to Amatitlan Via bus and started looking for a hotel, because the city isn´t in my guidebook. Lots of walking, it always is, because I have a personal vow that I will not set foot in a taxi, at least not as long as I have two feet. So i strolled around, no luck, and even went into an internet cafe to search for a hostel online. Finally, I found a sign for a hotel. The guy in the tienda downstairs told me, you don´t want that hotel, its dirty. Thinking I could handle anything I walked up and scoped ... read more

Tomorrow it´ll be a week. I must say, it definitely feels like it. I landed in Guatemala City around one o´clock on monday and took a bus to Zona Uno, to look for a hotel. How rediculous I was, sitting on a public city buss with a huge Backpack on my lap that was nearly suffocating me, afraid to talk to anyone and totally overwhelmed, I´ll admit. I hit zona uno but I still didn´t know where the hotel was, so I just got off and started walking, for about an hour to be honest, making a few circles and looking for street signs on the buildings, but finally I found the Meza, got a room, and locked up my backpack. With my pack safely locked down I went out to explore the city. A short ... read more
