I'm finding it hard to know where to start when looking back at our time in the US. I'm writing this from Mexicali, Mexico, having crossed the border in a friendly exchange of poor Spanish (mine) and poor English (the border guard) and the usual form filling and stamping. Being about an hour and a half away from the California border, America has clearly made its mark on this part of Mexico yet simultaneously, 'we're a long way from home, Toto'. Dorothy's words to her trusty companion rang true to me at a number of points in the US. It's probably helpful to say I never wanted to go to America. I had the rather arrogant but common view that it took the worst bits of English culture and made it louder, brighter and bigger and ... read more

Hola! My apologies on taking an eternity to write, my trips in the past few months have been more personal than pleasure based. I went home in late October/early November for a lovely autumn visit with family and friends, and then up to Northern California in December for a white Christmas. But these trips were not quite enough to cure my travel bug, so by mid-January I was getting stir crazy and fixated on my next international adventure: Mexico. Now to residents of Southern California, Mexico is the normal weekend getaway. Everyone has crossed over the border at some point in their life, even if just for some Coronas on a lunch break. It's just not a big deal! I suppose I could compare it to Canada for anyone up north, except there's a lot less ... read more

We were looking for some unique fun to bring in the New Year. It had to be close, it had to be warm, and it had to offer plenty of variety. So we loaded up the SUV with friends and headed to Baja, California. There is nothing like the beach and the coastal waters to enjoy when you wish to take a break from work and other responsibilities. We stayed at the San Quintin hotel. It was very nice, but also very loud. Hard to get enough sleep there due to all of the people coming and going at all hours. I think the next time I visit here; I will get a rental home. It will be quieter so that when we are ready for our time to sleep, we can do so. I guess ... read more

This trip we were able to visit the beach with clear waters and white sand that we had heard so much about. We decided to rent jet skies and try something new. It was a blast! On our way back to our hotel we stopped to visit the local shops to collect some souvenirs. We bought shirts, jewelry. We also ate lunch at one of the local restaurants. It was a family owned business, everything was homemade from the tortillas to the horchatas, a beverage that consisted of rice, cinnamon, and milk mainly. The foods there were very different, but good! The offered all kinds of meats. Pork, beef, chicken, tongue, brain, and all sorts of parts of the animal that you wouldn't normally eat. It was fun getting to try the local foods even if ... read more

Ensenada is not a place to which I would return. It’s small, run down, and pretty sketchy. We just planned on walking around the shops at the cruise terminal, but Michelle and John talked us into walking to town. We crossed the bridge over the little creek (which was filled with litter and tires) and right away ran into kids selling stuff. I’m not joking when I say that I think the little girl here was four years old. There were no adults around and you couldn’t help but feel depressed for these kids. This would be a good thing for our spoiled youth to see, however, I wouldn’t feel safe letting them off the boat! The next issue was that the map the Princess handed out was wrong. It showed the shopping and such to ... read more

Geo: 24.1385, -110.317We got a quick breakfast this morning and made a beeline for the gangway to checkout La Paz. Mom's knee is bothering her so she opted out of the shore trip today. It was a short day made even shorter by another hour because of a last minute change in the ship itinerary. We docked at 8am but have to be back on board by 12:30pm and it takes 40 minutes by shuttle bus to get to the town. That doesn't leave much time to do anything but I want to see La Paz. Mom heads back from breakfast while we disembark. When we get off, there's a Mariachi band playing right on the dock with a bunch of booths set up with Mexican crafts, souvenirs, t-shirts, etc. They even have a bar set ... read more

Geo: 26.0325, -111.354At 6:30am, I got the call from Alan that we needed to get breakfast and be off the boat by 8am. I was still charging camera batteries but we dressed and prepared to leave. Mom said she was not going today and wanted to stay on the ship but she changed her mind during breakfast. We took the first tender to the town of Loreto where we met a guy holding a sign with Alan's name on it. We walk with him to the dive shop where we meet Rafa and Oscar from the dive shop. They helped us get fitted for our wet suits, we climbed into the boat which was on a trailer (yes, Mom too) and headed for the harbor. They launched it with all of in it and we were ... read more

Geo: 22.88, -109.9We've reached our first destination at the tip of Baja California, Cabo San Lucas. The port has no large pier so we will need to use tenders (small boats) to ferry us from the cruise ship to the town. We booked a tour through Princess and we have to be ready by 8:45am so we were up at 7 and down to breakfast by 7:30. Mom and I are getting tired of the "big food" so I had cereal and fruit and Mom had oatmeal and mint pears. Everyone else was still going strong with the big plates. There was a problem with the tenders so we didn't get off the ship until almost 10am. The tender ride was quick and we were on the catamaran heading out to sea in no time. It ... read more

Geo: 27.3718, -116.367We started the day with a nice breakfast in the restaurant. Then we all split up. Mom checked out some stores, went to a $10 sale, listened to the "Fire Opal" lecture, had a snack and ice cream cones and then returned to our stateroom to get ready for formal night. I had a tuxedo to put on and Mom a fancy dress. The others were preparing for dinner too. Git and Alan both had tuxedos. We went to dinner - medallions of beef, French onion soup, sushi, and desert. After we went to a show to see a comedian/acrobat. I've seen better. We had some pictures taken with the ship background. Min and Boomer did the champagne fountain picture. It's 10 and we need to get up early for Cabo. Mom hangs out the ... read more
