We caught the trolley from San Diego down to the boarder town of San Ysidro. We tried to take a few pics and some video footage but we nearly got arrested by doing so... needless to say we put all the cameras away untill we were right in Tijuana. A nice little smoggy, stinky, culture clash of a rat's nest that Americans seem to love so much (mostly under 21's students) We were constantly hassled by merchants, begging children and crazy shop owners. All the sights and smells makes this place one in a million. A cross between Downtown L.A. and Bali. We wandered around for a while, saw the Tijuana arch, bought a few goodies (aka tourist stuff) then had a few mexican beers with some nice mexican food. We enjoyed our time there, but ... read more

SPRING BREAK 2004!! Wow, it really feels like a long time ago. This was my third trip to the hallowed hunting grounds of Rosarito, Mexico. Adam, Christian, Dan, Dean and his two german pals and me jumped in a couple of cars and headed south. It is incredible how close the Mexican border is to san diego. After about 35 mins on the road we were there, got the green light going through and off we went. I did almost get side swiped by a couple of mexican gelopies. They drive like madmen. We got to the hotel i usually go to which used to be called Hotel California, but they made so called "improvements" and aptly renamed it Hotel Del Sol. But due to the fact the hot water was not working we got a ... read more

Ensenada boasts Mexico largest flag. The Mexicans really like their flags, this one is about 100m across and dominates the landscape, visible from nearly all parts of the city. I think that I should introduce the team for phase II of Mexico properly. Me: Ali - 26 year old transient - enough has been said already. Matt: 26 year old English guy with an American passport - love of alcohol, women and spicy food. Used to work in London in the city for Abby National - thought there must be more to life and decided to travel the world just in case he was right... seems familiar. Robbie aka Boghen/RoboGhen: 24 year old Canadian from New Brunswick, loves women, soccer, mild food and adventure - good looking guy gets lots of attention from the ladies. Bi-Lingual ... read more

To the Americans TJ is known as the town where the 18-21 year olds go to be served in bars - a restriction that the back home in Britain is seen as very silly. Our friend Steve had been thrown out of just about every bar in four states so we decided that the last night of the Road trip should be in a bar. I met a Mexican guy in the SD hostel - "don't go, it's a shit hole, it's not Mexico". We explained and he agreed that it's probably a good way to end the trip. To get from the USA to Mexico you get on a trolley bus in Down Town San Diego spend $2.25 for a ticket and ride down to the border - about 8 miles away. You then get ... read more

Myself, along with 5 good friends of mine head down to mexico for a night of partying. Not sure of the date as it was a long ass time ago. Anywho, take a taxi from the boarder to rosarito. 30 minutes later the taxi drops us near papas and bear and all the other hub bub. $10 all you can drink... have a great time. I end up having to babysit one of my friends as he drank way too much. hold him up so he can piss in the bathroom. it was ugly. Locals were friendly. the place seemed to have a great vibe. Although we were all quite drunk and happy ourselves. 2 of my friends end up getting in to it with some locals over something to do with the price of a ... read more

TJ. Tijuana. Good old Mexico. Mexico is a very interesting country. Massive in size, very intriguing culture and history, various climates with desert as well as tropical forests, big cities and small villages, friendly people. The contrast from neighboring San Diego and California is indeed gigantic. You have clearly entered a country that is not the US. It doesn’t feel very exotic though. More like sleepy, touristy, and not at all interesting from a traveling point of view. This is where Californian college kids go partying because the drinking age more generous than in the US. This is where visitors to California go visiting Mexico just to be able to add a country to their list. With little expectations of excitement, me and my two Swedish travel companions joined that second category of visitors with an ... read more

San Diego and Tijuana are effectively the same urban sprawl, except that there happens to be a border running in between them. We got a tram to the border crossing - the busiest in the world - and then after going through two turnstiles, we were in Mexico. It was like we had suddenly gone back two hundred years. After the plush buildings and flash cars of San Diego, everywhere was old, run-down and primitive. You couldn't believe that two turnstiles could make such a difference. Tijuana is basically a tourist town and its very existence appeared to be based on people coming across the border for a bit of shopping. I could understand why, the shopping was fantastic, certainly compared to the tacky crap that dominated across the border. I got a fantastic ceramic chess ... read more

The history of California makes for a fascinating story. Who would have thought the world's eighth largest economy was formerly part of Mexico? The US took control of several border states formerly in Mexico at the conclusion of a triumphant war, yet the enormous influence of their Latino neighbours to the south is still prevalent in California today. Continuing from the previous journal my American friend and his buddy offered to drive me down to Baja California for a weekend away from San Diego. Mate, the furthest I'd travelled before going overseas was the to the border with Queensland, and here I was preparing to visit Mexico as my second overseas country. How exciting is that?! We piled into the car, dear reader, and drove the twenty kilometres from downtown San Diego to the border. The ... read more
