Mar 13 The group actually got some work done today; there were still the usual slackers but we still clocked in a semi-complete day. Hoorah. I got in some soccer playing with the chicos which turned into more of a swarm of little Mexican kids chasing a ball. I got a goal! Oh the pride. I got made fun of for having blue bear along with me. Everyone thought I brought him along for the kids. When the toy collecting went down today and I wouldn’t let people take him I realized the Jig was up. Now people keep hiding him on me, so I have to hide him in my sleeping bag so that he’ll be there for me when I got to bed and no-one will take him. Taegan and I had a nice ... read more

Mar 12 Today was a day of no work. Convenient that yesterday we couldn’t work at all because of the rain and today we weren’t working because of “other plans”. Why are we here again? Anyways, off to La Bufadora and Ensenada for a day of shopping and sightseeing. Oh, and no drinking; after last night I had to be sure no students were coming back to the bus drunk under my watchful, “responsible” eye. Last years group went to both of these places and so I didn’t have a lot to tick off my list to-do list today. The plan was to continue my search for a belt buckle as mine broke with all that 4 hours of hard work. Other than that I was just going to go with the flow. Upon arrival at ... read more

Mar 10 Well, the day started as I expected. The morning was pretty much a gong show; did I say something about 4 people working, the rest standing around? But I have to admit, once more tools arrived we were pretty hard at work. I was in charge of dumping heavy loads of dirt into a pile under the bleachers. It smelled, and I joked about how the assortment of smells was just me. Turns out, 4 hours later, that the kids like to go number 1 AND 2 back there. I think I still feel light headed. The group is a bunch of pansies and at first rain they packed it in… two hours early. We had some delicious lunch and were stared at by all the little Mexican school girls and then off to ... read more

I had no internet in mexico whatsoever. AM I had an amazing sleep last night; the nerves have started to shake off a little, this whole going away thing is STARTING to sink in. Not there yet though. Dan felt too homosexual to sleep in a bed with me. I planned it to a tee, just enough sexual innuendo with him to feel uncomfortable but not enough to think I’m gay: a queen sized bed all to myself. I figured Is start of the vacation with some eggs benny, no better breakfast. Things kind of just coasted through the morning, gave me time to check-out the girls before we had to check-out of out room. Jorge showed up with Vincent from last year and I could have sworn mark walked in the room. Way too funny. ... read more

One of the best things about living in San Diego is how close it is to mexico. I've been down there three times now. It takes about an hour to get there and its easy to get a hotel room right near all the big clubs in Rosarito. We drive through Tijuana to get there but haven't really checked it out yet, its a fairly dirty and disgusting place. First two times i we went down for a night only. Second time we took one of Amy's friends who was visiting for a week and who i met at their wedding. Its always heaps of fun. The area we go is squarely aimed at american tourists looking for a party- especially those between 18 and 21 who can't drink in the states but can easily do ... read more

How the hell did I end up back here? It's hard to pass up an opportunity to cross the border, and the Mexican was the easiest to cross from San Diego, so why not? Tijuana it is. Chris and I met up with Mark in the hostel and hopped into the car moments later. The plan was without a map this time as we figured we could head south until we could drive no further. We had actually read up that it's a better plan to park in the States and walk over to avoid any insurance issues. Unfortunately we missed the last exit and proceeded to join the line up of cars. I hopped out to ask an official where we could turn around and was very quickly reprimanded for exiting the car in a ... read more

!Hola! Como estas? Estamos muy bien! We have successfully navigated our way through Gringolia (Tijiuna to Ensenda), the dry desert of middle Baja, the beautiful beaches of Bahia Conception and Loreto, got our ticket for the ferry to Mazatlan in La Paz, and now we are sipping some serious Margaritas in Cabo. Not bad, huh? It turns out that going into Mexico from California, is easier than going from your couch to the fridge. The "guards" actually wave and motion for you to go faster as to say, "Hurry up! Get in here and spend some money!" We did stop at the border and get our tourist cards, which took about 5 minutes. However, it was at that point that I (Josh) realized my Spanish wasn't all I had hoped it would be. An example of ... read more

Set alarm for 7:30 - still raining, Shannon and I woof down some free hotel coffee in room and jump in the shuttle to take us to the LAX Hertz Rental Car place. We pile into our new minivan wheels - complete with mp3 player, 8 seats and good boot space, tinted windows yea baby. The side door even opens automatically - NZ$1905 split between the four of us served us well. Remember - tight right, loose left. When at red light, you can still turn right if the coast is clear. There are no roundabouts - instead there are people waiting at 4 stop signs. The first person to the stop sign has right of way. The motorways are so big and huge the 65mph speed limits aren’t really enforced apparently. People cruise along at ... read more

Tijuana is a bustling city on the Mexican side of the US-Mexico border. Any visitor going to San Diego will definitely make a trip to Tijuana, since many things in Tijuana (e.g. culture, cuisine, language, shopping, etc) are different and often cheaper than USA. Of course, I won't miss the opportunity to step into this small part of Mexico and experience a totally different atmosphere... (After visiting Tijuana, I can tell my friends that I have visited Mexico. Haha.) The Greyhound bus from Phoenix to San Diego reached S.D. Greyhound depot at around midnight. I wanted to visit Tijuana, but the sun would only rise around 7am or 8am and there was nothing to see in the dark. Hence I stayed in the San Diego Greyhound depot and spent my night sleeping in the waiting area. ... read more

also as a way to update where i have or have not been, I spent a week this past summer working in TJ (Tijuana as the rest of the world knows it) building a house for a family. It was crazy, because we were only about 30 minutes from the border of California, and only about 45 minutes from my house on the other side of that border, and yet all the houses in this area were made with garage doors, scrap wood, whatever they could come up with. And here we were actually building a frame for the house, and putting up stucco, and taring the roof to make sure it didn't leak... they had the nicest house on the block, built in a week, by a bunch of kids from just across the border... ... read more
