Hola amigos y familia, We finally made it to Baja - whoo hoo!! Let´s review... Friday - We crossed the border and Nicole cruised right by the place to buy tourist visas. Oh well. We stopped in the large town of Ensenada and had some delicious tacos. Then we drove down and out to Punta San Jose. What was the first rule of driving in Baja? Something about not driving in Baja? Yea, we ignored that one. We had to to make it to our camping spot. Saturday - We awoke in Punta San Jose to a very very overcast day, similar to Norther CA. The sun poked out around 2. The location was awesome - 1 hour driving from the nearest town with the ocean crashing up against tall cliffs. Brian went out surfing for ... read more

As we are only a stones throw away from the border it seemed churlish not to go across it. Not that we really found ourselves in Mexico. Tijuana is more like a gigantic discount pharmacy for Californians. The pharmacies even have touts out on the streets trying to entice customers in, you can buy just about anything except codeine or amphetamine based medications (although round the back streets........), Viagra and Cialis seem to be big sellers along with antibiotics and anti-herpes medication. Probably so you can get your moneys worth with cheap hookers and then hope you can clean up the resulting mess. Strangely the Corona tasted somewhat better south of the border, maybe because it’s half the price. Easiest border crossing ever going south, different story heading north. Wonder if it will be any easier ... read more

Mexico was our beach holiday within a holiday. Despite all the hassle getting there (the scenery on the way was amazing though - see the last two photos), we had a great time experimenting with Mexican food, speaking the odd bit of Spanish and drinking tequila in various cocktail combinations.... read more

The weather was conflicting. Was it going to rain or not? It did, and it even hailed, leaving the ground very wet and muddy—making the whole experience for my parents, tita (aunt), tito (uncle), and lola (grandma) of their very first trip to baja mexico reminiscent of the Philippines. I warned them that as soon as we cross the border, the cars will be involved in some chaotic dance where everyone will scramble to get to their right “lanes”. The traffic lanes and the order we had in the US will all be a blur because in Mexico, traffic lanes don’t exist. I warned my dad not to drive since he’s no longer used to the chaotic drive that will surely face him in TJ on the way to Rosarito. Driving in Mexico will be a ... read more

Mar 14 This morning it was so very hard to get up; that tile floor is doing a number on my back. Today we worked our asses off and were able to complete our glorious sidewalk. Go us! This was in between playing movie star as the kids wouldn’t stop asking for our autographs which I was more than willing to give. A few of my favourites were Matt signing “Matt is Hot” or my “Sometimes I like to sit and eat watermelons while pondering the meaning of the world surrounding us”. They’ll never know what we’re actually writing so why not have fun with it? We were almost finished when we were stopped shortly for a assembly with the kids. It was so cool as the different grades presented us with different cards they had ... read more

3.12.06 We have finally reached Mexico, or at least the part known as Baja. To many people, they are not the same thing, and from what little we have seen, I am inclined to agree, although my impressions of it being less populated and more like wilderness here are not based on actual experience in Mexico. Baja seems like a huge extension of the American southwest, combined with a rough seacoast and aqua semi-tropical waters (reminiscent of southern Turkey or photos I've seen of Sicily). The desert is the landscape, coming right down to the sea, with hardly a lush plant anywhere, except where occasional oases crop up around infrequent springs. It is rather ironic, therefore, that we entered Baja in a torrential rainstorm. The border is a dirty, crowded place about fifteen miles south of ... read more
