The day after Valentine's Day, rather fittingly, marked the day of my departure from the tedium of suburban life and the career ladder. Not that I hadn't enjoyed my first taste of being a worker drone. After the monotony of studying for 4 1/2 years I welcomed the chance to just be a cog in the machine, mainly just because a 9-5 schedule can actually give you a greater feeling of freedom than one where a deadline is always looming. The only real problem with my cog was that it wasn't big enough. And whatever it was connected to, way far away in my future, wouldn't be quite as impressive as I'd hoped. So after sticking it out for the mandatory year I decided to jump ship. Well I shouldn't say I jumped. I wasn't pushed, ... read more

In het kleine centrum is welgeteld 1 straat waar ... read more

We got up early to get to Jasper at a reasonable time, foregoing breakfast. In the car we had some fruit and vegemite on bread. While the scenery in Canada has been amazing so far, it went to a whole new level today. There were virtually no cars on the road, and those that were over took me quickly. We made a few stops to take photos of massive mountains and frozen lakes. Mt Robson is the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies (at nearly 4000 metres), and was the only one with some cloud around it. Hopefully the photos still turn out alright. There were road signs threatening sightings of moose, but there wasn't any today unfortunately. Just before Jasper we hit the British Columbia/Alberta border, and I got out in my t-shirt for a ... read more

Hi Family and Friends, Happy Valentine's Day Before I leave on my big trip to South America, I wanted to make sure that my travelblog was working and that everyone was receiving messages. I'm new to this so hopefully it all works fine. So this is the big test. Please send me a message back, either through the blog (not sure how that works) or to my e-mail address (rjeurope@hotmail.com) to let me know that you're getting these updates. I leave for Buenos Aires, Argentina on February 23, 2006. I'll be returning from Lima, Peru on March 25, 2006. My approximate itinerary is to travel through Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia and Peru. I'll be making stops at as many famous destinations and out-of-the-way places as time will allow. If any of you have been to ... read more

It appears that my first location in this journal is incorrect. I am not in Hamilton, I am infact in Burlington. Silly TravelBlog does not list Burlington as a real place. Anyhow, yeah, this is really just a test entry, so there isn't supposed to be any 'heart' in this entry. Hopefully it will get more interesting as time passes. :) Ciao for now!... read more

The alarm worked - more luck than anything, and now it was time to face D-Day. I haven't had much success at crossing the road so far in Canada, due to the fact they drive on the right (wrong!) side of the road. Despite this we are hiring a car for the week to travel up to Jasper and Banff. I thought I would get some fitness work in by running into downtown Vancouver. It was pretty cold, but once I got going I was fine, and was a great way to the city, especially running over the bridge (Burrard Street). The expedia website had come in handy again, and with Phil's help we picked up a rental car for the week at only $209 - a bargain. On top of this we took out the ... read more

We made it home just before a major blizzard hit. Thank you, Belinda, for giving us a heads-up and meeting us half way with Tuck. It was so refreshing to feel the wind-blown snow on my face. I don't know how many times over the last month I had been dreaming of the sensation, given the dry 90+ heat of SE Asia. Last night was the Snow Moon. There was enough snow on the ground that the light reflecting from the sun on the full moon bouncing off the snow made interesting shadows of the bare branches. Almost enough light to read by. ... read more
