Crossing the Rockies Caught the train across the Rockies from Vancouver to Calgary. Left in the evening, and by early morning we were well into the foothills, and spent most of the day in the Rockies. Arrival in Calgary was interesting! We had booked a hotel from the Qantas brochure because it was relatively cheap, only to find that it was a $75 (in 1984) taxi ride from the airport. My first lesson in total cost of ownership thinking. Ontario Flew from Calgary to Toronto, and then by train to stay with friends of Sylvia's for a week. Kids loved the snow and walking on the ice of Lake Ontario. Canada Route Map... read more

Diary 19720803 This was the last day for our “groups” so we had to evaluate. Mostly we just sat around and talked about ridiculous things we had said or done. Evan tried to get a political discussion going, and as soon as he did, he retired to discuss music or something The afternoon was supposed to be spent in the resource centre but everyone is getting tired of the heavy schedule of study. I went for a while and saw several good films, but most I played volley ball. 19720804 We had “professional” groups today for the first time. These are designed to help those of us who are inexperienced to learn how to teach and also to help everyone adjust to teaching in West Africa. Diary 19720729 Our orientation for going to West Africa started officially today. There are about 120 volunteers going to Nigeria, Sierra Leone or Ghana. This part of our orientation is to make us more aware of our personal attitudes toward our own culture and all other cultures. We are all living in one residence building in the basement of which there is a library of films, articles, and books. This morning we played a game in which we were blindfolded, so we could see how it is to learn with a handicap. 19720730 It seems that much more than one day has gone by. We started a “simulation game” which supposes that our plane crashes on an unknown island in the Atlantic on the way to Africa. There are only the twelve survivors of our group ... read more

From Juneau, we took an Alaska ferry to Skagway. The passenger and automobile carrying ferry traversed the Lynn Canal and the Taiya Inlet. The Lynn Canal is actually a fjord some 90 miles (140 km) in length and one of the world's deepest. Skagway was full of reminders of the Klondike Gold Rush era, only 60 years before. We stayed at the Golden North Hotel, built in 1898. It was authentic, with creaking wooden floorboards and large room doors. The rooms were undoubtedly as they had been, except for newer furniture. At Skagway, we boarded a White Pass & Yukon (WP&Y) train for Whitehorse. The locomotives were newer diesels, but the wooden coaches original to the Klondike period. A lunch stop was made at Bennett. The 110 mile (177 km) narrow gauge railway was built in ... read more
