Crossing the Rockies
Caught the train across the Rockies from Vancouver to Calgary. Left in the evening, and by early morning we were well into the foothills, and spent most of the day in the Rockies.
Arrival in Calgary was interesting! We had booked a hotel from the Qantas brochure because it was relatively cheap, only to find that it was a $75 (in 1984) taxi ride from the airport. My first lesson in total cost of ownership thinking.
Ontario
Flew from Calgary to Toronto, and then by train to stay with friends of Sylvia's for a week. Kids loved the snow and walking on the ice of Lake Ontario.

And hot chocolate with marshmellows...
and making igloos in the piles of snow out the front from the road clearings, and the frozen swimming pool, and the waterfall in the rockies that still flowed underneath the icicles... And freaking out on the train when we went past the freight train that had derailed the day before.
