Saskatoon, how I love thee, let me count the ways! Saskatoon, by far, the best place we've been to on our trip based on the feeling of the town and the people (minus the bitter cold weather...). It doesn’t have the crazy sky scrapers, it doesn’t have the bustling subways or trams, and it sure doesn’t have any famous buildings or people walking the streets. But that’s what gives Saskatoon its beauty and the people are amazing. We could feel it as soon as we got here that it was different, which is probably why we stayed so long. The first thing we did in Saskatoon was head to a local pub called Lydia's for the Halloween version of their weekly poetry slam. The slam is a competition of local poets dishing out there very best ... read more

Well, my year of travelling has finally started. First of all flew into Toronto which was pretty amazing. Went to Niagra falls the day after and got really, really wet on the 'maid of the mist' boat, but it was amazing. I think everyone should do it before they die. We also went to a winery owned by Dan Akyroyd where they make ice wine, and we got some free tasters. Went straight to the CN tower, which is someting like 150 stories high. You could see for miles and miles and Toronto looked beautiful at night. The strangest bit about the tower is the glass floor, its such a strange feeling because it feels like your floating. The next day I got on a bus for a 30 hour journey to Winnipeg in Manitoba. I ... read more

Wow two updates within a couple of days ... either you guys are very lucky or I've got some spare time up my sleeve. So here we go with the Saskatoon update. After weeks of living in dorms and talking to perfect strangers, it felt great to be heading back over to Saskatoon for some R & R with some old pals. Rich and Cei-Cei were nice enough to provide me with a comfy bed to sleep in for a couple of days - something my back really needed after all these months of lugging a duffel bag around. I may be stubborn but I refuse to travel with a stroller bag. I find there is nothing masculine about running for a bus or train with a stroller bag. The evening of Day 1 saw us ... read more

Yesterday marked the last bit of lengthy driving for a while - it was another 9 hour haul from Winnipeg into Saskatoon. But what a drive it was! Starting out around the Peg the skies were overcast. It threatened rain for the longest time before the skies finally did open for a bit. However, on the horizon we could see a clearing in the cloud cover, and without having to wait too long we got some of the first blue sky of our trip. The pictures have a difficult time portraying just how big the skies are out here - it's something that you have to see for yourself to appreciate. Still, the whole backdrop does make for some great photos. We got settled in at Saskatoon, and then after a quick stop in at the ... read more

We had a great visit with Eugene & Claudia, lots n lots of laughter. Saskatoon was not one of our stops but a friend I had met in Haines Junction, YT lives there. I had not seen Marla in 15 years. We could stop here because we had bypassed The Pas, and Marla had one more of my photo albums. This would be the only time I could stop to see Marla lol don't know when I will get this kind of opportunity again. The last time I saw her, her twins were babies, now they are young people lol So we stopped and I got to catch up with Marla. She has not changed at all lol. We stayed for a lil over and hour. I took pics or should I say Nat took pics ... read more

During a summer about eight years ago my university flatmates all went home to their respective parents' places leaving me to fend for myself. In order to cover rent I placed an ad in the local paper and got a call from a Canadian guy Kevin who was doing some travelling. A few days later he moved in and stayed for the summer. We spent most days drinking, goofing off and stealing Christmas trees. When he left I promised I'd try and make it over to see him. Eight years later I arrived at his home town of Saskatoon after a nine hour greyhound bus ride from Calgary. I have to mention that I was a little bit scared before the ride for two reasons. Firstly because of the case in Manitoba where a guy on ... read more
