To Canada for Alec's funeral We had spent Friday, Feb 27th in Kaohsiung grading papers, assignments, working out, researching for our upcoming trip to China, and resting. We even treated ourselves to a Skype visit with Mom and Dad in Canada for almost an hour, then watched a few episodes of Boardwalk Empire. We went to bed around midnight. At 4:12AM, we got the call informing us that Dad, Alec Tarasoff had passed away while getting out of the jet tub at his home. His tired heart had finally given out. He had been joking and in good spirits moments before with Mom. Maurice scrambled to get flights. We got a flight on Monday and arrived back in Canada the same evening. While Maurice made travel decisions Linda planned for her substitute at the school for ... read more

After returning from Singapore, we were pleased to welcome Jack, Linda's brother. He arrived for a good part of his holiday to visit with us and see how we live in Taiwan. He had spent 8 days in the Philippines and flew into Taipei. He was able to catch the high speed rail from Taipei to Kaohsiung, with the help of the locals of course. People here are always ready and pleased to be able to help tourists, and practice their English. Maurice met him at the train station and brought him to our apartment. The first order of business was to get him comfortable riding the scooter. To spend 10 days with us, scootering independently was a must. Jack did just fine, and did a fabulous job of following 5 meters back and a meter ... read more

First, a very funny note! I just found out that I spent the 5 days in Churchill with two fellow bloggers from Travelblog. And the best part, is that we spent a lot of time together without ever mentioning TB. So Sheila and Paul it was great to meet you...and to read your blog too! You can find Paul & Sheila under silvernomads nickname....and their blog is way more detailed than mine on anything Churchill has to offer...a great read and some amazing pictures! So due to the fog and that we got delayed with our flight from Churchill to Winnipeg by more than 24 hours...I missed my train connection to Vancouver. Could have made it as the train pulled into Winnipeg with more than 5 hours delay....and pulled out of Winnipeg still two hours late. ... read more

It was now officially summer and we were completing our week of R&R in Hawaii. It was our plan to leave Hawaii at 10PM, fly overnight to Denver, then after an hour layover, fly directly into Saskatoon, arriving at 6PM, rested and ready to hit the ground running in Canada. United Airlines had different plans for us! The flight leaving Honolulu was 4 hours late, therefore there was no way we could connect in Denver. So, after 3 hours at the United counter in the airport, they finally had us on a flight to San Francisco. We only managed to get a few hours sleep on this flight and then in SF, we had a very difficult time finding our departure gate with Air Canada. We were told to exit the terminal, then told to re-enter ... read more

As I tell friends and family the stories of our travels, I find myself feeling ever more, the wonderment of how truly lucky, blessed, spoiled I have been. When you start with plans, wishes and dreams, but haven't embarked on the reality, you think the journey is really cool. When you experience the journey and every element has been filled with joy, beauty, kindness of new found friends, excitement and wonder, then you give thanks that life is so generous. I will be stumbling on memories for the rest of my life that bring me close again to my son, that make me pause to catch my breath in that overwhelming moment of awe, that help me recognize how truly lucky we are. In wandering the world (not just seeing it on a screen or hearing ... read more

This is the very first blog I have ever created and well it feels very foreign to me. Within the next several weeks I will embark on a new journey and experience things that I have never before. Currently I am squatting at one of my closest friends apartment (thank you Brittany!!!) in Saskatoon preparing for my flight to Entebbe, Uganda. I guess the theme of this summer will be 'wanderlust'- the desire to wander or explore the world, yes it sounds cheesy but spending a month in a foreign country is definitely out of the norm for me. So there will be a lot of learning occurring these next couple of months. One is using a new forum, two learning about a new language and culture, three new job when I get back from this ... read more

May 10/14 Up early courtesy of the alarm - aka 'a parking lot full of semis'. A little slow moving due to no sleep. K took the monsters out for a walk in the tornado, then it was brunch with K's family. K's parents drove up for Mum's Day weekend at the golf course his bro works at! What a great blessing it was for us to see them. Got to meet K's bro's girlfriend (I shall call them 'Kynya') and her 4 midgets. Another blessing for us, and more than likely them as well, as we are pretty fantastic! Made my mark before leaving the restaurant of course - Went to go to the bathroom, and the only stall left is the stall where someone convienently 'forgot' to flush their mounds of tp, and other ... read more

Going home got me healthy. I like the chance to reset, it helps me clear my head so that I experience the next part of the trip with renewed energy. What I like best, is seeing my loved ones. They help me relive that best parts of all my stories/experiences. They celebrate me, which feels really good and I get to reconnect with everyone. This time I had a quick turn around, but saw all the important people, rested and got healthy from a nasty sinus infection, and got all my tasks done before getting back on a plane. I was lucky enough to have smooth flights and I got to use two seats on the 6 hour flight into Lima. I arrived safe and sound with a taxi pickup and warm welcome at the AirBnB ... read more
