I hope those of you that are planning on reading this regularly are ready for some long-winded, exciting, boring, funny, and dull entries. Sarah and I only have a week until our departure date, and we're still trying to cram in as much information as humanly possible. I will leave you now, only to return at a more foreign and exciting destination... ... read more

Canadians make no attempt to hide the fact they live in cold weather conditions. It actually seems like a pissing contest at times to note who lives in the colder climate. This recently happened to me during my first visit (ever) to the next door province of Saskatchewan to visit Saskatoon. When travelling abroad, I smugly tell other travellers that it's normal to have temperatures dipping to -20 Celcius. This seems to be the mark where residents will plug in their cars at night so they start in the morning, others will break out the long johns and Sorel winter boots and the cities open their emergency warming stations and temporary homeless shelters. I suppose its all relative as a few weeks prior on a trip to Las Vegas, I happened to get stuck in the ... read more

I'm a Good-News-Firster. I am of the mind that it makes it a lot easier to take the bad if you already know the good. So to that end, I have finally received my placement for the month of July! I will be living and working at Devaaki Hospital which is based in Karaikudi, Sivagangai District, Tamil Nadu (South India). It sounds like the hospital is privately funded, and it has several departments including Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Orthopaedices, and Urology, as well as general surgeries. The hospital has five doctors, twenty nurses, fifty beds, and is apparently open 24 hours (we'll soon see the Indian definition of "open 24 hrs", I have my doubts). By Indian standards, this is most likely a medium-sized hospital. My supervisor is the chief doctor and general surgeon, and his wife ... read more

I've got India on the mind. I probably should have been doing my physics homework this evening, and I'm not particularly looking forward to getting up and biking to class in a number of hours. But such is life. I leave for India in 3 weeks! And so if I can figure out how to get this countdown to work, well...I'll have a countdown. ... read more

A few clips taken with the digital camera. 1. How to safely mount a camel. Erin getting up on the beast. 2. Call to prayer. If you have never heard it, it is somewhat haunting. It can ne heard 5 times a day from wherever you are. This was taken from our hotel balcony in Selcuk, Turkey 3. Erin makes a friend. Petting a lamb in Samandag, Turkey.... read more

As I look out the window at the snow-covered streets, New Zealand and Asia seem very far away... We are very glad to be home though. The flight home was decent, as good as it gets with two 10+ hour flights back to back! We had an overnight in Vancouver and were fortunate to crash with Duane's cousin Emily and catch up with her. We also met Lisa for lunch in Calgary airport, which was sweet. And then we arrived in Saskatoon to a welcome committee. It seemed so chilly out, but it wasn't really. We have to get our weather toughness out again. We had a few days to get over the jetlag before we had to get back to work. Duane's been subbing regularly and I am back at work too. Our department has ... read more

Just 16 days to departure. First Germany, then Turkey and Syria. I have planned all I am going to plan, my fear at this point is to plan this thing to death. We have a pretty good itinerary set up, with some built in flexibility. Ali, who I "met" online after emailing a Turkish motorcycle club has been just unbelievable. He has set up a few places for us to stay with local police and a dinner with the Chief and Deputy Chief of the Osmaniye Police! He is also making arrangements for us to have a working cell phone while there, not just our Sasktel paperweights. For some reason, I have only gotten excited about Syria in the last few weeks. I think it's because of the Turkish motorcycle factor. Our Visas arrived a little ... read more

PROLOGUE The previous few months before we left was quite the rollercoaster itself. A while back we had a huge weekend at our cabin with my cousins and "the boys". Playing V-ball with drunk Dwayne was quite the experience. Then, Dennis and I made a trip to Regina where we gambled with Frederick, played the Wii with Hjorthy and bowled with Dave Gassner. Shortly after was back to Kindersley on the weekend of Blake Evans' wedding. Then I had the chance to make it to Paradise Hill to say goodbye to a few close friends. Next was a garage sale in Saskatoon where we met Keith's girl Roxy for the first time and then there was the loading of the wool with our cousins...which sucked. Suddenly, it was August Long and we were up at Candle. ... read more
