Here it is folks, the start of my ridiculous journey/ adventure into the unknown. I'm taking a break from packing my backpack to drink tea, make a nice marinade for some tofu, and eat a few olives. I've been spending the last few days procrastinating the fuck out of getting ready to go. I've been waking up early in a panic about leaving and then sitting around and doing nothing. I spent half an hour today playing fetch with the dogs after spending the previous half hour watching a rerun of Degrassi: the next generation. Prior to the TNG I watched X-3, which I have seen before. Geez Louise. And now here I am typing useless nonsense into a blog. Here I go again on my own. Thursday morning I leave. Friday night I get there. ... read more

Geoff and I have found ways to occupy ourselves on the long drives… we play music, listen to books on tape, Geoff does his business, and we play rhyming games. Following our Wednesday in Winnipeg we had to get an early start to get to Regina. The drive was the first true drive through the prairies…. We saw nothing for miles except for wheat, farmhouses, telephone poles, and pickup trucks. And some cows. Winds were high, so we had to be careful about a cross wind that might cause us to sway a little bit, but other than that, the travel was easy. The highways are in excellent condition and as we got closer to Regina the weather improved. We took a little bit of an unscheduled stop in a field to take some pictures of ... read more

Odometer: 42920 km The travel is all familiar, old ground, from here to home in Calgary. The temptation will be to ride through it with out taking notice of anything, thinking that I know everything there is to know about the country here. I’ll have to overcome that numbness and try to keep my senses as alert as they have been for the rest of the trip. My plan is to travel on the TransCanada to Indian Head; slip over to the Qu’Appelle Valley and past Katepwa, the location of our cottage back in the forties; through Labret; breakfast in Fort Qu’Appelle and hopefully a chance to meet Donna Caruso, a videographer I admire; and, finally, slip into Regina by early afternoon. This morning my sleep came to an abrupt end with a loud banging that ... read more

Well my fellow bog readers. I have been so freaking slack. Ive been home a month and I havent done "My final words about ASIA" article. Damn i can't believe Im home already. Ummm Thailand was really cool. I think my favorite country was Laos. I would go back there in 2 seconds flat. I miss Australia the most. I already want to go back and I have only been here a MONTH! I think next on my list of adventures will be a 3 point, 3 country dive journey. Thats when I come back from Wales/England. Sigh! Going backpacking doesnt hold off the travel bug. It feeds it so that it grows into this hungry monsterous giant to which I must obey! ... read more

Off I go to Japan... I'm still in preparation, anxiety mode as I count down the days to my departure for Japan. 16 to be exact. My checklist of Things To Do Before I Go To Japan is far from complete. Still many loved ones to visit, appointments to make, shit to pack, and nerves to conquer. I am obviously excited, and at the same time getting very sad, as I love my family, friends, work,... country. There is a lot that I am leaving behind and that I will miss dearly. But I know that there will be much to find. I am looking forward to sharing with you My Adventures in Japan. Don't miss me too much... but do miss me some.... read more

"That's a load of crock sh#*!" Grandma Bep, Swift Current, June '06. Apparently life does not make sense in Saskatchewan for the saskatoon pie baker, but she sure was nice to us. We found shelter from the rainstorm in her cafe and befriended Grandma Bep. There have been a lot of rainstroms... Even in Alberta's desert! We went to the Writing on Stone Provincial Park, supposedly a "desert", but there were gale-force winds and flooding from all the rain during our visit so I don't believe them.... We Loved the hand dryer in the batroom and the wood stove though where we dried out our soggy stuff. The park was incredible still with hoodoos everywhere! Some with petroglyphs carved by various native tribes who used the sacred Milk River Valley as a place to seek ... read more

Canada has it's fair share of unusual town names, Moosejaw being the first that I've hit. Whilst sitting on the Greyhound from Alberta, the image of a goofy looking horse with horns talking non stop on the seat next to me kept popping into my head. Of course it never came to life, which is clearly a good thing as I don't really want to be that crazy on my travels. After a not so restful sleep rolling along the flatlands through the night, I thought my eyes were having some colour issues when I managed to pry them open. The horizon in front of me was such an intense blend of orange and red, it managed to bring me to my senses rather quickly. I suppose the license plate statement, 'Land of the Living Skies' ... read more

I'm sure you can all understand me when I say that the last two months have been both dragging and rushing by. Checklists to create and finish, gear to research and purchase, itineraries to plan, insurance, work arrangements, moving, blah, blah, blah. It's has taken up so much real estate in my mind that it gets to the point that you want to say,"to hell with it lets go already!". Plans have changed so much since we started thinking about this that the only thing that we've decided on for sure is to remain flexible. We're rank amateurs at bicycle touring and most of our gear is untested so it's a virtual certainty that we will have some painful lessons to learn, but what better way to learn. Speaking of painful lessons, as most of you know Vicki ... read more

There is something to be said for summer in a place with 9 months of winter every year. Seasonal depression, pasty white skin, and vitimin D deficiencies are abandoned for the glorious heat and girly drinks with umbrellas that are all too common in Saskatchewan in summer. There's only 8 weekends of decent weather a year in Regina and so each one seems to bring with it a festival or gathering of some sort. Event #1- Taste of Regina + Flatlands Music Festival All I need is a pair of dancin shoes and one of those girly drinks with umbrellas; or pilsner that works too. Jack Semple band wailed into the night, joined by the esteemed lead singer of another local favorite Step Chyle... 9 months is a long time to practice the guitar. In fact ... read more
