We get a late night message from a mysterious stranger asking if he can meet us for breakfast to show us “something really cool”. Perhaps unsurprisingly we don’t usually accept invitations like these, but this sounds intriguing, and anyway, if he’s going to try to murder us or do something else shifty, surely he wouldn’t do it in broad daylight in front of a whole bunch of people in the hotel restaurant. He pulls a small box discretely from his pocket, and we wait with bated breath as he opens it. Cocaine or heroin perhaps? That’s not what it looks like, although that said I’m not sure either of us would know a line of cocaine (it’s slightly concerning that I know that cocaine comes in “lines” - too much late night TV perhaps) if it ... read more

In this trip, we visit the Quebec's eastern regions of Bas St-Laurent and Gaspesie. First region sits in the estuary of St-Lawrence river and second one in the St-Lawrence gulf. First stop was 'Le bic' national park. It's a very scenic region, with cliffs, many small bays, emerging rocks, salt marshes, etc.... Park has many hiking trails of all difficulties along with bike trails. Sea kayak excursions are also possible. It's a good spot to observe sea birds. Seals are also to be seen, but they are shy and you need to be patient. There are 2 types of seals: common seal and gray seal. The common seal is smaller with a cute face and an all over pale grey color with small black spots. The gray seal is larger, darker and have a dog face. ... read more

Shelley and I decided to leave our campsite a day early to make it home before the bad weather arrived. It was predicted that there would be some high winds and thunderstorms coming into our region and we really didn't want to drive the RV through that. The traffic through Quebec City was mostly avoided as we remained north on the 40 and then the 50 highway towards Gatineau. This was the best decision really. We enjoyed our drive back, but we'd been behind the wheel a lot in the last two weeks and the anticipation of getting home was nice. Everything was just as we left it. Several neighbours came over to greet us and hear about our trip. We couldn't believe the amount of stuff we were bringing back with us! We made so ... read more

We’re camping on the Ile-d’Orleans….and this blog today actually begins in the year 1579, in Outlines, Marne, Champagne-Ardenne, France. Jean Roy dit Desjardins (Joigny) (Lauzier) was my 11th great-grandfather, on my mother’s maternal side of the family. All we know about Jean Roy is that he seduced Marie-Marguerite Boucquenier (Brouchu) in January 1604, and did not marry her, although she gave him a son, Olivier Roy, who was born and baptised on October 2 1604 in Saint-Andre's Roman Catholic church in Joigny, France. Here is a link to a photo of the inside of that church today: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3580894#/media/File:Joigny_-_Eglise_Saint-André_2.jpg Olivier grew up in that region of France, and became a ‘Maître Tonnelier”; that is, a Cooper, or barrel maker. He married Ma... read more

During our drive to the campground located on Ile d'Orleans, we passed through Kamouraska. This place has some family history to it. Much of the family history will be found in the next blog with Ile d'Orleans, but this little town played a big part of it for one side of my family. If you clicked on that link for Kamouraska, you will see someone named Charles-Alfred Roy dit Desjardins. He's a relative of ours! He is my third cousin, five times removed....lol. He was a cousin to my third great-grandfather, Pierre Roy dit Desjardins. It was Pierre who was one of the many Desjardins who made the decision to leave their farms and livelihoods in Kamouraska to venture west to begin a new life for he and his family. He went as far as Manitoba ... read more

For the last 3 years, we were supposed to go to Africa. It was the continent I have never been to and many family types of unique animals live there, that i have never seen in the wild. In end of 2019 and start of 2020, my wife hurt her foot bad, so we decided to go to a closer place instead. We went to Nicaragua. We are very familiar with central america as we went there many times before. Then pandemic started. No place out of country to go for 2 years. Finally start of this year, situation improved with COVID. Sadly, I went to hospital for some chest pain, and even if it wasn't serious in the end, my health insurance blocked me for 3 months. Then my wife went to hospital too a ... read more

Took the train from Montreal to Quebec City. The three hour ride was in a very rural and farm country area and included on the train was dinner and drinks. During our stay in Quebec City, we stayed at Hotel Le Priori. Nice hotel right in lower Quebec. Always amazed at people who are multi-lingual. Found out the person who checked us in speaks 4 languages - English, French, Ukraine and Russian. Those last two must be a real conflict!! We never realized how little we knew about Canadian history. We have found that Quebec City is even more French Canadian than Montreal. A city tour and half day spent at the Museum of Civilization was really helpful in opening our eyes. Quebec City is the second oldest city in North America behind St Augustine. It ... read more

The flight to Montreal reminded us that there are little people in the world. We found that some of the little people do not cope with being on a plane for 3 hours. Our ears and the co-passengers were subject to over two hours crying and screaming. The required face mask did not protect us! We stayed at Auberge du Vieux-Port which is in old Montreal and overlooking the harbor. Most of the buildings are converted warehouses from the 1800s with thick granite walls. Some of the sights we saw include the Notre Dame basilica. Although it doesn't have the historical significance of the namesake in Paris, it is from 1800s and is absolutely beautiful. The mixture of blue and gold was breathtaking. The organ was playing and reverberating the whole church Another sight included the ... read more

I am sitting in airport waiting for Austrian Air check in to open. Trip has been smooth so far beyond “the bathroom incident” In Halifax airport. When I popped in a woman informed me that of the ten stalls, only one had toilet paper. How odd! And it was only nine a.m. I went off seeking more toilet paper, I mean just how awful an impression for women disembarking from the next plane. Not many workers around…..I found a lady at the tourist bureau but didn’t know what to do. Three burley border guards walked by and I stopped them to ask. They seemed perturbed by my request for toilet paper and even one guy had the nerve to touch his gun and tell me that they had better things to do. ? I refrained from ... read more

Enfin!!
