UntitledSo I have come to somewhat understand the term Quebecois. Quebecois are the people, culture, history, language, food, art, architecture, and much more, which make up the province of Quebec. As some have said, like the professor who presented to the group today, Canada started here in Quebec. And while many may disagree with this statement, there is historical fact to support this idea. Moreover, I have truly seen the importance that language plays into maintaining a person(s) identity and culture. The people of this area do not maintain French as a way of separation, but instead maintain it as a form of cultural identity that allows them to be more comfortable with incorporating themselves with the rest of Canada. This morning we toured the Musée de Civilization and met with a professor who helped design ... read more

Quebec CityI woke up this morning at 6:45 and headed for the airport to fly from Ottawa to Quebec City. The plane I rode in was extremely small, and in fact was a propeller plane. After a noisy flight we arrived in Quebec City. We checked into our hotel and then had a guided tour of the city. Quebec City is like a town. The amazing part is I keep thinking I am in France. Everything is written in French, all of the people only speak French and all of the stores are in French. Much of the city dates back to the 1600's. After our tour of the city we went to a baseball game sponsered by the US Counsel in Quebec. There was a lot of food, and all of the anouncements were in ... read more

On to Quebec...Today was another travel day. We flew from Ottawa to Quebec City. Quebec has a completely different feel than Ottawa. It is a bilingual city where French and English are spoken equally. We took a walking tour of the city to get the general feel. The highlight of the day was the Fourth of July party thrown by the U.S. Consul General to Quebec. We went to a minor league baseball stadium, ate charred hot dog panini's, popcorn, potato chips, and cake. It was an all-American attempt. The evening never really got underway though as it started pouring rain. Happy Fourth of July!! P.S....A few days ago we watched a Canadian commercial. It's actually an ad for Molson Beer, but it incorporates a few Canadian stereotypes and is really funny. Download the video if ... read more

Salut! So, I am here in Quebec City, about ready to go! I was planning to leave yesterday, but was convinced to stay one more night for some hanging out with my couchsurfing host, a moto ride with Andrienne through the mountains north of Quebec (specifically the 371 provincial road!!), and a date with Vanessa in Old Quebec. So now I have a million miles to go before I get to CT and it will be a long long looooooonng day today. However, I am very much looking forward to taking a state highway (201) through the best uninhabited parts of Maine. I have a feeling this afternoon and tonite will just be grueling, but I will figure something out along the way. Maybe sleep under a bridge... who knows? Anyway, its time to hit the ... read more

I am here in Quebec City and was planning to leave today for some camping, but was talked into hanging out with Thomas and sharing Laurances apartment while shes in Montreal for the weekend. It rained tonite so Im glad I did. This point in the trip though, Im no longer really driven to a goal. Im going to NYC next for my friend Adams birthday, but I have no couches planned and very little in the way of planning going on. Frankly Im tired of that and also of sightseeing. There is so much to see in these new places, but spending at least 5 hours a day walking around is a lot of work and I have the t-shirt tan to prove it. I think for a while I will avoid doing tourist things ... read more

is oollllldddd and extremely loud as EVERYTHING seems to be under construction. I toured the Governor-General's residence at the Citadel, the old fort that protects the entrance to the rest of the river. Learned a lot about Canada's government from a very helpful guide, I was the only one on the tour. Anyway I have some more pics up, just a few from camping, Montreal and Quebec. http://picasaweb.google.com/wired1000/IMLeavingMontreal... read more

Fredericton was very good to us. We washed ourselves, and our sleeping bags, and everything felt very nice as we climbed out of town. We were off, 500km to Quebec city. About 70 km into our first day out of Fredericton, at precisely the same time as it started to poor with rain, I hit a rock, that popped my innertube, and wrecked my tire as well. We have lots of spare tubes, and a spare tire as well, so it didnt slow us down too much. We finished in Woodstock, where we had originally planned. We camped under a Gazebo in a playground, right next to a campsite because our spot was cheaper than the campsite; free. We had a lot of great roads in New Brunswick. The highways were newly built, so they ... read more
