I'm just testing out my blog for when I actually start travelling. However, I am officially on vacation now and enjoying it, although the Ontario heat is making me lethargic ...I'm just hanging out with family and friends while preparing for the flight to London. I'll be in Europe for at least a month and a half, and then hopefully a few weeks in Sierra Leone. More to come...... read more

Well we had a much better time on our second outing. We spent nearly a week May 28 to June 2nd. We went to an Ontario Provincial Park called Presqu'ile. We stayed at site 114 in The Pines. There was electricity on the site, but no water. We could have filled our holding tank at the dump station, but we chose not to. There was a tap near the site, and also flush toiletes. There were free showers also within walking distance. We can't say enough good things about this camp ground. During our stay it was very quiet there, only a few campers and most of them were seniors. The bathrooms were clean and tidy, with hand dryers so no need for the paper towels. The garbabe and reclycling drop offs were also nearby. There ... read more

All my bags are packed (pretty much) I'm ready to go (almost) I'm typing here inside my door I hate to let you know I'm saying bye. All right, enough cheesiness. It's been a LONG year, it's been a good year, and in many ways, it's been a growing up year (although I wish the growth was a physical one as well as an emotional one). After the craziness of the last few weeks, I'm looking forward to the semi-controlled chaos that is South-East Asia, and seeing if UBC was wrong about my rural suitability. ;-) I'm typing this on the eve of my departure early tomorrow morning, so I wish you all good adventures this summer wherever you may be. I'll be sure to remember to drink bottled water, remember to open my eyes, and ... read more

Well Dar and I invested in a pop up tent trailer, got a great deal. Our first camping trip was going to be local on about 20 km's from the house. We went to Cedardale Campsite www.cedardalecamp.com We had terrible weather, rained just about all of Saturday, the grounds were muddy as hell, the washrooms were not modern by any stretch of the imagination. They say on their website clean and modern, if these were clean, then I would have rather had shit in the woods. I didn't take any photos of this campsite, mainly because of the weather. The owners say they have over 200 campsites, but what they don't tell you is most of these sites are filled with permenent residents and there aren't too many to choose from. This is suppose to be ... read more

I am on my way! I leave for the airport in a few hours and I thought that I should take care of a few things first. The first and really only thing to take care of is writting this journal and sending this page out to everyone. Lets start this story at the beginning so everyone is on the same page. the story so far... After suffering a devistating defeat at the battle of graduating from the Univerity of Waterloo, I have found that I have to one CSC (or Complimentary Studies Course) over the summer term, which would make it hard to travel. So as usual in the cosmic balance, my bad luck at having to take a course gave way to taking a two week course in London, England touring around. Sounds like ... read more

Today's the day, woohoo! Too many stupid things left to the last minute calls for a near all nighter, it's 4am and I just finished packing. I really have some unrealistic idea's about how much I can fit in that damn backpack, but it should be good now. Time will tell. So I grab the bus in two hours, 3.5 hours on that bad boy and I am at the airport. 6 hours of extreme airport fun while awaitng my flight (can you feel the sarcasm?) and I will be flying to Glasgow. Anyway, wish me luck, and I'm going back to checking things. I just know I am going to forget at least one "important" thing. If all goes well, I will next be writing to you all from Sunny Scotland!... read more

So it's the night before the big trip. I've just been visiting with my friend Adam and my family so far and the reality of this trip has really not set in yet. I'm almost sure that I'll wake up tomorrow and be back in Victoria. Aside from disbelief, there's definate anxiety. I know that my grandfather can't remember everything anymore and I know my family sees me as responsible for looking after him while I'm gone. But I'm not planning on limiting his activities. In fact, I see my main responsibiliy as making sure he rips it up while we're over there. If something bad happens I'll be there to help him out but otherwise I'm going as his friend. As someone who will respect him. I'm excited as well. I'm going to learn so ... read more

I have to admit that I felt a lack of enthusiam for this upcoming trip. Perhaps its because I've already been to Toronto, New York and Italy but there are always new adventures to be found in familiar territories. Albert and I went to the Royal Ontario Museum as it was free on fridays. There were decent roman, greek and egyptian collections but that seemed to be the highlight of the museum. I didn't see a lot of Canada's history (perhaps thats in another museum). One random thing I did learn, that I'll share to enhance your trivial knowledge, is that all people, at the end of the 1500s, ate with their fingers or with the knives that they carried as their personal possessions at all times (spoons were graciously provided by the host). It was ... read more
