I've been in Toronto for a week now and have been having a great time. I arrived at Toronto airport with my enormous board bag and my back pack and Peggy (my cousin's partner) was there waiting for me. When she saw my head poking out from behind all my stuff I'm sure she was glad she had brought Adams truck to pick me up. Adam and Peggy live in a beautiful part of Toronto called the Beaches. For my fellow Aucklanders it's a lots like Devonport. Quiet, tree lined streets; pretty, little old houses and it's a ten minute walk down to lake Ontario. Which is like the sea except fresh water and freezing cold. The weekend just been was the Beaches Jazz festival and it was so much fun. The main street gets blocked ... read more

So I arrived in Toronto on Sunday August 10th, and boy has it been exciting! I have gone rock climbing, I went to see some live music, I learned how to ride a motorbike, I spent a day at Niagara falls and the surrounding area, I went to a Zambian cultural night with the other four volunteers, got chewed on by bed bugs in the hostel… And I have had my brain packed to the point of bleeding with information during all the training sessions. The goal of the training is to cover five areas of learning. The levels from the bottom to the top are: Health and Safety, Having the right approach, Understanding of livelihoods, Understanding of the development sector, and Understanding how to create change. They try to give us some time off (thus ... read more

Hey guys! Just trying out the site. I know you guys demanded emails and lots of pictures so hopefully I can update this often enough to satisfy the mom+dad that I am safe and sound as well as satisfy you kids that I have Sam under control. JUST KIDDING! I leave tomorrow and I'm still not packed. Yes, I am procrastinating because I don't have Alia here ironing all of my clothes and packing for me (because I do it wrong...apparently). Love you guys! Thanks for coming out and saying goodbye last night! Jen... read more

Ok, so, I freakin love Canada! Although... we were at a market and I needed a bank, so I asked some chalk artist where the bank was... he says in French that he doesn't speak English... so I try (in my bad French) asking where the bank was... while I was walking away he says (in English) "Stupid American" good times... good times.... read more

Niagara Falls!

Niagara Falls Buffulo New York, was a fairly tired looking, run down looking town. A kilometer away in Canada its like Las Vegas, nice buildings and streets, lookouts, casinos, the people looked happier.... generally much much nicer.... maybe the United States felt that since Niagara had all the excitement stitched up they felt it would be a waste of money to try and compete?? So they basically let their side of the Falls ......... fall down! The tour company had learnt from previous experience that it is not a good idea to take the bus over the bridge to Canada. On a previous trip it took 3 hours to cross the bridge and the entire bus was inspected, making them 4 hours or more out of sinc with the itinirary, so now if you wanted to ... read more

on our way to Niagara Falls

North America » Canada » Ontario July 12th 2005

We've just driven across the border into Canada and are on our way to Niagara Falls. Got a bit carried away with "being a size 8" in the Mall of America and headed out to Door County, Wisconsin for a few lazy days by the lake after blowing the last few weeks' budget! We then took a ferry over to Michigan (can you believe it takes 4 hours to cross a lake and a timezone here?) and visited an Amish community. Have stayed in some 'eventful' motels lately where the police make regular appearances in the middle of the night. They haven't let me take their photo arresting anyone yet though. We're so glad to hear you're all OK and have been thinking about everyone who has to travel in London at the moment. Keep safe. ... read more

Day two saw us travel over 900 kms, 40 of them in the wrong direction. Once we got that sorted out we were doing much better! Stopped for coffee and driver shift change, checked the map and realized we had wandered a little further off the beaten path than we thought. A quick revisit to familiar territory and we found the right road.... a gravel, logging road nonetheless. A rough ride on that route for about 60 kms until we saw paved road again and finally more traffic. Saw eagles, a wolf, the giant goose of Wawa, a major truck fire on the Trans Canada which had us stopped on the highway for half an hour. We fared much better than some who had been there for an hour and a half before we showed up. ... read more

First 2% of driving is now behind us! We've arrived in the grand metropolis of Sudbury, safe and sound. No incidents (meaning no speeding tickets) to report. Saw our first wildlife just three hours into the trip. Had to slow down on the TransCanada to let a very slow, majestic, confused Moose find his way to the other side. (Not sure what he could find there that he did not have where he started from.) Traffic was very light, at some points it felt like we were the only ones on the road. Guess everyone else was at the cottage. Sightseeing limited to trees, rock, more trees, some open water and swamps! Saw lots of roadside advertising for the Giant Goose of Wawa. Something tells us that they are overselling it! We'll let you know. Plan ... read more
