I previously blogged about celebrating Grandpa Northcott's 95th birthday in conjunction with Christmas of 1981. His actual birthday was February 4th, so I decided to honor him on this significant occasion by flying to Toronto to join the party. I was surprised that Mom had the same idea...I didn't know she would be there until we met at the party! Grandpa's favorite game was Scrabble. I challenged him to a game and he won...not using any words that were not in the dictionary, and with me trying my hardest. His mind was still very sharp at 100 years of age. I just hope I inherited his longevity gene. He passed away at 101. I returned to Brussels on February 10. Mom stopped over in Brussels from February 16 - 19 on her way back to Thailand. ... read more

Diary 19720803 This was the last day for our “groups” so we had to evaluate. Mostly we just sat around and talked about ridiculous things we had said or done. Evan tried to get a political discussion going, and as soon as he did, he retired to discuss music or something The afternoon was supposed to be spent in the resource centre but everyone is getting tired of the heavy schedule of study. I went for a while and saw several good films, but most I played volley ball. 19720804 We had “professional” groups today for the first time. Diary 19720729 Our orientation for going to West Africa started officially today. There are about 120 volunteers going to Nigeria, Sierra Leone or Ghana. This part of our orientation is to make us more aware of our personal attitudes toward our own culture and all other cultures. We are all living in one residence building in the basement of which there is a library of films, articles, and books. This morning we played a game in which we were blindfolded, so we could see how it is to learn with a handicap. 19720730 It seems that much more than one day has gone by.
